Collaborating for the Successful Retirement and End-of-Life Care of Non-Human Primates in Biomedical Research.

Research facilities have established animal adoption programs for laboratory animals. However, adoption to private owners is not an option for non-human primates (NHPs), so their post-research life presents a unique challenge. Here, we describe a collaborative effort between laboratory animal veterinarians and behavioral management staff in retiring NHPs in place to ensure their quality of life after the completion of research projects. The success of our retirement program hinges on our collaborative efforts to manage clinical diseases such as arthritis, amyloidosis, and diarrhea; to surgical

From the INVICTUS Trial to Current Considerations: It's Not Time to Retire Vitamin K Inhibitors Yet!

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia in clinical practice, and oral anticoagulation is the cornerstone of stroke prevention in AF. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) significantly reduce the incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage with preserved efficacy for preventing stroke compared to vitamin K antagonists (VKA). However, the pivotal randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of DOAC excluded patients with valvular heart disease, especially mitral stenosis, which remains an exclusion criterion for DOAC use. The INVICTUS study was a large multicenter global RCT aimed at evaluating the role

Retrobulbar hemorrhage decompression with paracanthal "one-snip" method: Time to retire lateral canthotomy?

Orbital compartment syndrome is a rare but serious condition most commonly as a result of traumatic retrobulbar hemorrhage and must be treated quickly to avoid ischemic damage to the optic nerve and retina. While the previously accepted standard of care for management of this condition has been lateral canthotomy with inferior cantholysis, this procedure can be challenging for physicians to perform given the rarity of the condition and that patients are frequently in significant pain often with significant periocular edema. In this case, orbital compartment syndrome was effectively treated wit

Assessment of Somatosensory and Motor Processing Time in Retired Athletes with a History of Repeated Head Trauma.

Measurement of the adverse outcomes of repeated head trauma in athletes is often achieved using tests where the comparator is ‘accuracy’. While it is expected that ex-athletes would perform worse than controls, previous studies have shown inconsistent results. Here we have attempted to address these inconsistencies from a different perspective by quantifying not only accuracy, but also motor response times. Age-matched control subjects who have never experienced head trauma (n = 20; 41.8 ± 14.4 years) where compared to two cohorts of retired contact sport athletes with a history of head trauma

Pressure. A Qualitative Analysis of the Perception of Concussion and Injury Risk in Retired Professional Rugby Players.

This study interviewed retired professional rugby union players (≤10 years since retirement) to discuss their careers in the game of rugby union. The primary aim of the study was to document their understanding of concussion knowledge and the analogies they use to describe concussion. In addition, these interviews were used to determine any explicit and implicit pressures of playing professional rugby as described by ex-professional rugby players. Overall, 23 retired professional rugby players were interviewed. The participants had played the game of rugby union (n = 23) at elite professional

Platelet-Rich Plasma for the Treatment of Degenerative Lumbosacral Stenosis: A Study with Retired Working Dogs.

Traditionally, canine degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLS) has been defined as a multifactorial syndrome characterized by lumbosacral pain triggered by the compression of the nerve rootlets of the cauda equina. There is still no consensus on the treatment of this condition, probably because there are a plethora of possible causes. In addition to compression, inflammation is a very important factor in the physiopathology of the disorder. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) consists of an increased concentration of autologous platelets suspended in a small amount of plasma. Platelets are a source of s

Retiring the term FTDP-17 as MAPT mutations are genetic forms of sporadic frontotemporal tauopathies.

See Josephs (doi:10.1093/brain/awx367) for a scientific commentary on this article. In many neurodegenerative disorders, familial forms have provided important insights into the pathogenesis of their corresponding sporadic forms. The first mutations associated with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) were found in the microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) gene on chromosome 17 in families with frontotemporal degeneration and parkinsonism (FTDP-17). However, it was soon discovered that 50% of these families had a nearby mutation in progranulin. Regardless, the original FTDP-17 nomenclat

Frontotemporal correlates of impulsivity and machine learning in retired professional athletes with a history of multiple concussions.

The frontotemporal cortical network is associated with behaviours such as impulsivity and aggression. The health of the uncinate fasciculus (UF) that connects the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) with the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) may be a crucial determinant of behavioural regulation. Behavioural changes can emerge after repeated concussion and thus we used MRI to examine the UF and connected gray matter as it relates to impulsivity and aggression in retired professional football players who had sustained multiple concussions. Behaviourally, athletes had faster reaction times and an increased er

Internet use and depression among retired older adults in the United States: a longitudinal analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to examine the association between Internet use among retired older adults in the United States and changes in a commonly used predictor of depression (the CES-D). METHOD: Analyzing data from four waves (2002-2008) of the Health and Retirement Survey, we assess whether an available and commonly used index of a depression state was affected by prior values of the index and Internet use. The sample includes 3,075 respondents observed over 4 waves of data, yielding a total of 12,300 observations. We analyzed the effect on depression of Internet use and pa

N-cadherin mediates nitric oxide-induced neurogenesis in young and retired breeder neurospheres.

Neurogenesis may contribute to functional recovery after neural injury. Nitric oxide donors such as DETA-NONOate promote functional recovery after stroke. However, the mechanisms underlying functional improvement have not been ascertained. We therefore investigated the effects of DETA-NONOate on neural progenitor/stem cell neurospheres derived from the subventricular zone from young and retired breeder rat brain. Subventricular zone cells were dissociated from normal young adult male Wistar rats (2-3 months old) and retired breeder rats (14 months old), treated with or without DETA-NONOate. Su

When Grandparents Step Back: Fertility Intentions and Policy Implications in the Context of Delayed Retirement in China.

As countries implement delayed retirement policies to address population aging, reduced availability of grandparental childcare emerges as an unintended consequence that may further depress fertility intentions. This study examines whether household income improvement and formal childcare provision can mitigate the fertility-suppressing effects of diminished grandparental care. Using factorial survey experiments embedded in a national Chinese survey, fertility intentions were assessed under randomized scenarios. Results show grandparental care absence reduced second- and third-birth intentions

Associations between immunosenescence and domain-specific cognition in the Health and Retirement Study Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) pose a critical challenge for the aging U.S. population, yet many biological pathways remain unclear. Recent work has focused on whether peripheral immunosenescence contributes to cognitive aging. Using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we examined associations between peripheral immunosenescence and domain-specific cognitive function. RESULTS: Immune function was associated with general and domain-specific cognition, with variation by sex and immune marker. The CD4 + EMRA:Naïve T Cell Ratio, CD4 + Naïve:CD8 + EMRA Ratio, and C

Hearing loss and cognitive impairment among older adults: findings from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid aging of populations, dementia has become a major health problem. Hearing loss is common among older adults and has been recognized as a contributing factor to cognitive impairment and dementia. We aimed to explore the association between hearing loss and cognitive impairment in older adults. We also sought to quantify the extent to which the impact of hearing loss on cognitive impairment could be mediated by depression and social isolation. METHODS: We used nationally representative data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a population

Loneliness and its associated factors in older Australians residing in retirement living communities: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Increasing in popularity, retirement living communities have the prospect for increased social connection to counteract loneliness, a major public health concern. This study investigated prevalence and factors associated with loneliness for older Australians in retirement communities. METHODS: A cross-sectional health and wellbeing survey, including the UCLA-3 Loneliness scale, was completed by 1,178 individuals aged ≥ 65 from retirement villages throughout Queensland and New South Wales, Australia in September 2021. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was utilised to dete

Safety Using Public Buses in Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities: An Exploratory Study in Two North American Cities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Safe community mobility is critical to support aging-in-place. For older adults living in low-and moderate-income urban settings, driving may not be an option due to costs associated with car ownership or a lack of driving history. Some older adults retire from driving due to changes in their health. Public transportation is critical to support community engagement. However, little is known about transportation challenges in naturally occurring retirement communities (NORC). Therefore, the purpose of this ecological theory-informed study was to explore supports and l

Implications of near-term coal power plant retirement for SO2 and NOX and life cycle GHG emissions.

Regulations monitoring SO(2), NO(X), mercury, and other metal emissions in the U.S. will likely result in coal plant retirement in the near-term. Life cycle assessment studies have previously estimated the environmental benefits of displacing coal with natural gas for electricity generation, by comparing systems that consist of individual natural gas and coal power plants. However, such system comparisons may not be appropriate to analyze impacts of coal plant retirement in existing power fleets. To meet this limitation, simplified economic dispatch models for PJM, MISO, and ERCOT regions are
