Peer-led active tuberculosis case-finding among people living with HIV: lessons from Nepal.

PROBLEM: People living with a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have a high risk of tuberculosis and should undergo regular screening. However, they can be difficult to reach because they are stigmatized and discriminated against. APPROACH: In Nepal, the nongovernmental organization Naya Goreto implemented a peer-led tuberculosis screening project in which people living with HIV volunteered to contact others in this high-risk population. Volunteers took part in a short training course, after which they attempted to contact people living with HIV through existing networks and self-h

Participants', caregivers', and professionals' experiences with a group-based rehabilitation program for Huntington's disease: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that rehabilitation is beneficial for persons with Huntington's disease (HD), but there is limited knowledge about participants' experiences with residential rehabilitation programs. We therefore did a study to explore patients', family caregivers', and health professionals' experiences with a group-based, residential rehabilitation program for individuals with early to mid-stage HD, focusing on three research questions: How did participants experience the structure and content of the program? What outcomes did patients experience? What challenges and success fact

Why less may be more: a mixed methods study of the work and relatedness of 'weak ties' in supporting long-term condition self-management.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of the roles and responsibilities of long-term condition management (LTCM) outside of formal health services implicates a wide set of relationships and activities of involvement. Yet, compared to studies of professional implementation, patient systems of implementation remain under-investigated. The aim of this paper is to explore the work, meaning and function attributed to 'weaker' ties relative to other more bonding relationships in order to identify the place of these within a context of systems of support for long-term conditions. METHODS: This is a mixed met

Configurations of self-identity formations of adults who stutter.

It is important for clinicians to understand how adults who stutter construct who they are, i.e. their self-identity, in order to offer personally meaningful interventions. Early research on stuttering and self-concept provided initial knowledge, but there has been a dearth of further research in this field. This article, the third in a series of papers emanating from a doctoral study, provides new insight into the configurations of self-identity formations of adults who stutter. Previous articles from the study described how 'Able' (positive self-identity) and 'DisOther' (negative self-identi

Psychosocial Aspects of Scleroderma.

Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc; also called scleroderma) have to cope with not only the physical impacts of the disease but also the emotional and social consequences of living with the condition. Because there is no cure for SSc, improving quality of life is a primary focus of treatment and an important clinical challenge. This article summarizes significant problems faced by patients with SSc, including depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleep disruption, pain, pruritus, body image dissatisfaction, and sexual dysfunction, and describes options to help patients cope with the consequences of

A systematic review of outcomes of chronic disease self-management interventions.

PURPOSE: To carry out a systematic review of program outcomes used in the evaluation of group-based self-management interventions aimed at people with arthritis and other chronic conditions. METHODS: The systematic search was performed across databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. Both between-group and within-group effect sizes (ES) were calculated. Results were interpreted as small (ES ~ 0.2), medium (ES ~ 0.5), or large (ES ~ 0.8) effects. RESULTS: The majority of 18 included trials investigated the effectiveness of arthritis-specific interventions. Across most outcomes, small e

Coping with headache.

OBJECTIVE: To describe self-initiated actions and cognitive strategies used for coping by women who suffer from episodic tension-type headache. DESIGN: Qualitative data from focus-group interviews were analysed according to Giorgi's phenomenological approach, inspired by Lazarus's theory of coping. SUBJECTS: A total of 15 women with tension-type headache, 20-60 years old, were recruited to three different focus groups through newspaper advertising. RESULTS: To cope with episodic tension-type headache, rhythm and balance in actions like eating, drinking, and sleeping were essential. Several

The experience of community-based peer support groups for people living with bipolar disorder: A qualitative focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Peer support has a long history of being offered through community programs, and is increasingly formalized in mental health services to facilitate recovery-oriented care for mental health concerns such as bipolar disorder (BD). This qualitative study explored experiences of community-based peer support programs from the perspective of people with BD, to generate insights to optimise the delivery of peer support in clinical settings. METHODS: Adults living in Canada with BD, who had participated in or provided peer support, participated in one of five 90-min focus groups. Particip

Urologists' Estimation of Online Support Group Utilization Behavior of Their Patients With Newly Diagnosed Nonmetastatic Prostate Cancer in Germany: Predefined Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Due to its high incidence, prostate cancer (PC) imposes a burden on Western societies. Individualized treatment decision for nonmetastatic PC (eg, surgery, radiation, focal therapy, active surveillance, watchful waiting) is challenging. The range of options might make affected persons seek peer-to-peer counseling. Besides traditional face-to-face support groups (F2FGs), online support groups (OSGs) became important, especially during COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate utilization behavior and physician advice concerning F2FGs and OSGs for patients with newly diagn

How recovery definitions vary by service use pathway: Findings from a national survey of adults.

OBJECTIVE: How people define recovery may affect their recovery goals, service use, and ultimately their outcomes. We examined recovery definitions among adults in recovery from an alcohol use disorder (AUD) who had different service use histories. METHOD: We analyzed online survey data from 1,492 adults with resolved lifetime AUD in "treated recovery" (any use of specialty services, such as inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation; n = 375), "assisted recovery" (any use of lay services, such as mutual-help groups, and no use of specialty services; n = 174), or "independent recovery" (no use of

The need for antidepressant withdrawal support services: Recommendations from 708 patients.

Approximately half of the tens of millions of people currently taking antidepressants will experience withdrawal symptoms when they try to reduce or come off them. Nearly half of these describe their symptoms as severe in surveys. Many prescribing doctors seem ill-informed and unprepared to provide effective discontinuation advice and support, often misdiagnosing withdrawal as a relapse of depression or anxiety. 708 members of online support groups for people on antidepressants, from 31 countries, completed a sentence in an online survey: 'A public health service to help people come off antide

The role of facebook support groups for women with benign urologic conditions.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the availability and content of patient support groups on social media platforms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five prevalent benign, urologic conditions affecting adult women were selected for analysis. Facebook support groups for these conditions were identified. Groups specific to one urologic condition and with at least 400 members were included, and groups for pediatric and malignant conditions were excluded. Each support group was analyzed for member count, posts per month, and period of activity. The 100 most recent posts in the largest support groups were manually r

Hidradenitis suppurativa on Facebook: thematic and content analyses of patient support group.

Online support groups present a sheltered and partially anonymous zone where patients can unload that which disturbs and preoccupies them. In this qualitative study, we explored the use of a Facebook support group for Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) patients, and analyzed the contents of shared posts. By evaluating the post's themes, we aim to contribute a deeper understanding of HS patients' needs and possible ways of engaging them. We analyzed more than 730 posts and 8500 comments posted on the "Hidradenitis Suppurativa Israel'' Facebook group. Content analysis was performed, categorizing all
