Theta Stimulation Enhances Early Consolidation of Semantic Memory.

This study investigates the role of theta frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) in enhancing the consolidation of newly acquired semantic knowledge. Although postencoding theta oscillatory power increase has been reported to benefit episodic memory consolidation, its influence on semantic memory retention has not been examined. In this experiment, 175 participants were taught fundamental immunology concepts and were then randomly assigned to receive either theta or beta tACS, applied through midline frontal, left parietal, or bilateral parietal montages, or sham stimula

Semantic similarity among autobiographical memories is associated with rumination.

Depressive rumination is characterized by repetitive dwelling on one or more self-relevant, past-oriented topics. However, little empirical evidence links depressive rumination to the perseveration of specific themes in autobiographical memory (AM) retrieval. This study examined whether ruminators are more likely to retrieve semantically overlapping AMs across different times and locations using the experience sampling method (ESM). Participants (N = 58 Japanese-speaking university students) generated AMs in response to negative and positive cues three times daily for seven days. In total, 306

Linking Symptom Inventories Using Semantic Textual Similarity.

An extensive library of symptom inventories has been developed over time to measure clinical symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI), but this variety has led to several long-standing issues. Most notably, results drawn from different settings and studies are not comparable. This creates a fundamental problem in TBI diagnostics and outcome prediction, namely that it is not possible to equate results drawn from distinct tools and symptom inventories. Here, we present an approach using semantic textual similarity (STS) to link symptoms and scores across previously incongruous symptom inventorie

Mpox lesion counting with semantic and instance segmentation methods.

PURPOSE: Mpox is a viral illness with symptoms similar to smallpox. A key clinical metric to monitor disease progression is the number of skin lesions. Manually counting mpox skin lesions is labor-intensive and susceptible to human error. APPROACH: We previously developed an mpox lesion counting method based on the UNet segmentation model using 66 photographs from 18 patients. We have compared four additional methods: the instance segmentation methods Mask R-CNN, YOLOv8, and E2EC, in addition to a UNet++ model. We designed a patient-level leave-one-out experiment, assessing their performance

Multiresolution semantic segmentation of biological structures in digital histopathology.

PURPOSE: Semantic segmentation in high-resolution, histopathology whole slide images (WSIs) is an important fundamental task in various pathology applications. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are the state-of-the-art approach for image segmentation. A patch-based CNN approach is often employed because of the large size of WSIs; however, segmentation performance is sensitive to the field-of-view and resolution of the input patches, and balancing the trade-offs is challenging when there are drastic size variations in the segmented structures. We propose a multiresolution semantic segmentatio

Typicality in the brain during semantic and episodic memory decisions.

Concept typicality is a key semantic dimension supporting the categorical organization of items based on their features, such that typical items share more features with other members of their category than atypical items, which are more distinctive. Typicality effects manifest in better accuracy and faster response times during categorization tasks, but higher performance for atypical items in episodic memory tasks, due to their distinctiveness. At a neural level, typicality has been linked to the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in semantic decision tasks, bu

Neural correlates of semantic number: A cross-linguistic investigation.

One aspect of natural language comprehension is understanding how many of what or whom a speaker is referring to. While previous work has documented the neural correlates of number comprehension and quantity comparison, this study investigates semantic number from a cross-linguistic perspective with the goal of identifying cortical regions involved in distinguishing plural from singular nouns. Three fMRI datasets are used in which Chinese, French, and English native speakers listen to an audiobook of a children's story in their native language. These languages are selected because they differ

Automated text-level semantic markers of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Automated speech analysis has emerged as a scalable, cost-effective tool to identify persons with Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD). Yet, most research is undermined by low interpretability and specificity. METHODS: Combining statistical and machine learning analyses of natural speech data, we aimed to discriminate ADD patients from healthy controls (HCs) based on automated measures of domains typically affected in ADD: semantic granularity (coarseness of concepts) and ongoing semantic variability (conceptual closeness of successive words). To test for specificity, we replicate

Semantic Feature Extraction Using SBERT for Dementia Detection.

Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to the development of cognitive deficits, such as aphasia, apraxia, and agnosia. It is currently considered one of the most significant major medical problems worldwide, primarily affecting the elderly. This condition gradually impairs the patient's cognition, eventually leading to the inability to perform everyday tasks without assistance. Since dementia is an incurable disease, early detection plays an important role in delaying its progression. Because of this, tools and methods have been developed to help accurately diagnose patients in th

Bell's Palsy and Its Semantic Change over Time.

BACKGROUND: From 1821 to 1829, Sir Charles Bell presented cases of facial paralysis from infection, trauma, and unknown causes. As such, "Bell's palsy" initially referred to facial palsy of any etiology. Today, the term is reserved for idiopathic peripheral facial palsy. The objectives of this analysis were to establish when the eponym came to vogue and delineate the semantic shift from its original definition to its current one. METHODS: Extensive review of available 19th and 20th century literature mentioning "Bell's palsy" and "Bell's paralysis." RESULTS: Historical accounts have eponymou

Semantic and episodic memory in adults with temporal lobe epilepsy.

The primary aims were to (1) identify the factor structure of tests thought to measure semantic and episodic memory and (2) examine whether patterns of impairment would show a double dissociation between these two memory systems at an individual level in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The secondary aim was to explore the impact of epilepsy-related variables on performance. This retrospective study involved a cohort of 54 adults who had been diagnosed with TLE and had undergone a neuropsychological assessment that included four memory tests traditionally used to measure either sema

Segmentation of breast ultrasound image with semantic classification of superpixels.

Breast cancer is a great threat to females. Ultrasound imaging has been applied extensively in diagnosis of breast cancer. Due to the poor image quality, segmentation of breast ultrasound (BUS) image remains a very challenging task. Besides, BUS image segmentation is a crucial step for further analysis. In this paper, we proposed a novel method to segment the breast tumor via semantic classification and merging patches. The proposed method firstly selects two diagonal points to crop a region of interest (ROI) on the original image. Then, histogram equalization, bilateral filter and pyramid mea

Neural Bases of Phonological and Semantic Processing in Early Childhood.

During the early period of reading development, children gain phonological (letter-to-sound mapping) and semantic knowledge (storage and retrieval of word meaning). Their reading ability changes rapidly, accompanied by learning-induced brain plasticity as they learn to read. This study aims at identifying the neural bases of phonological and semantic processing in early childhood by using a combination of univariate and multivariate pattern analysis. Nineteen typically developing children between the age of five and seven performed visual word-level phonological (rhyming) and semantic (related

A Brief Drawing Task for the Differential Diagnosis of Semantic Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Semantic dementia (SD) is a subtype of frontotemporal lobe degeneration characterized by semantic loss, with other cognitive functions initially preserved. SD requires differential diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Semantic knowledge can be evaluated through different tests; however, most of them depend on language. OBJECTIVE: We describe the development of a brief drawing task that may be helpful for the differential diagnosis of SD. METHODS: Seventy-two patients, including 32 AD, 19 bvFTD, and 21 SD were asked to dra

The role of semantic activation during word recognition in Arabic.

In the current study, the role of semantic activation in the process of word recognition was investigated among native Arab readers. Twenty-nine typical readers in third grade were tested in reading three lists of pseudowords. Each list consisted of thirty pseudowords (lists A, B and C). Each word in list A was matched with a real meaning, and each participant was trained during eight training sessions to learn the meanings of the pseudowords (the semantic list). For list B, the participants were exposed only to the phonological pronunciation of each word during eight phonological training ses

Semantic discrimination impacts tDCS modulation of verb processing.

Motor cortex activation observed during body-related verb processing hints at simulation accompanying linguistic understanding. By exploiting the up- and down-regulation that anodal and cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) exert on motor cortical excitability, we aimed at further characterizing the functional contribution of the motor system to linguistic processing. In a double-blind sham-controlled within-subjects design, online stimulation was applied to the left hemispheric hand-related motor cortex of 20 healthy subjects. A dual, double-dissociation task required partic

Word recognition in Alzheimer's disease: Effects of semantic degeneration.

Impairments of word recognition in Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been less widely investigated than impairments affecting word retrieval and production. In particular, we know little about what makes individual words easier or harder for patients with AD to recognize. We used a lexical selection task in which participants were shown sets of four items, each set consisting of one word and three non-words. The task was simply to point to the word on each trial. Forty patients with mild-to-moderate AD were significantly impaired on this task relative to matched controls who made very few errors.

KaBOB: ontology-based semantic integration of biomedical databases.

BACKGROUND: The ability to query many independent biological databases using a common ontology-based semantic model would facilitate deeper integration and more effective utilization of these diverse and rapidly growing resources. Despite ongoing work moving toward shared data formats and linked identifiers, significant problems persist in semantic data integration in order to establish shared identity and shared meaning across heterogeneous biomedical data sources. RESULTS: We present five processes for semantic data integration that, when applied collectively, solve seven key problems. Thes

Vection is modulated by the semantic meaning of stimuli and experimental instructions.

Vection strength is modulated by the semantic meanings of stimuli. In experiment 1--even though vection stimuli were of uniform size, color, and luminance--when they also had semantic meaning as falling objects, vection was inhibited. Specifically, stimuli perceived as feathers, petals, and leaves did not effectively induce vection. In experiment 2 we used the downward motion of identical dots to induce vection. Participants observed stimuli while holding either an umbrella or a wooden sword. Results showed that vection was inhibited when participants held the umbrella and the stimuli was perc
