Performance of Deaf Participants in an Abstract Visual Grammar Learning Task at Multiple Formal Levels: Evaluating the Auditory Scaffolding Hypothesis.

Previous research has hypothesized that human sequential processing may be dependent upon hearing experience (the "auditory scaffolding hypothesis"), predicting that sequential rule learning abilities should be hindered by congenital deafness. To test this hypothesis, we compared deaf signer and hearing individuals' ability to acquire rules of different computational complexity in a visual artificial grammar learning task using sequential stimuli. As a group, deaf participants succeeded at all levels of the task; Bayesian analysis indicates that they successfully acquired each of several targe

Deafness in the Brazilian care policy: a genealogical analysis.

Deafness can be understood from the clinical-therapeutic and the socio-anthropological perspectives. The study aims to perform a genealogical analysis of deafness; that is, an analysis of the practices of knowledge and power in Brazilian health policy. This is a qualitative, documentary study based on the theoretical assumptions of Foucault. Researchers selected 23 documents and conducted eight semi-structured interviews, which were also considered documents, with a non-probabilistic sample using the snowball technique. The genealogical analysis showed that health policies aimed at people with

The difficulties of learning fingerspelling: an experimental investigation with hearing adult learners.

Fingerspelling is used to support sign languages, providing a means by which words without signs may be communicated. As with signing itself, it has often been reported that learners find greater difficulty reading fingerspelling than they do in encoding it. An experiment tested the skills of adult hearing learners of the two-handed fingerspelling system used in British Sign Language. Participants were asked to read video recordings of their own fingerspellings; thus each undertook the reading task at their own spelling speed. Participants were divided into fast and slow spellers. Each group m

"Signing tics"--insights into the pathophysiology of symptoms in Tourette's syndrome.

We describe the case of a young woman with Tourette's syndrome who incorporated sign language into her tic behavior. Sign language was used in complex "phonic tics" such as swearing, echoing what others said, or repeating what she said, read, or thought. We suggest the descriptive terms "coprolaliopraxia," "echolaliopraxia," and "palilaliopraxia" to denote these symptoms. The incorporation of such complex, learned movements into the repertoire of hyperkinesias further emphasizes the complicated association between purposeful and automatic execution of movements comprising tic behavior. This ca

The story so far: scoping review of narratives in deaf children.

Narrative language samples can be used to measure language development in children, but research on narrative development in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children is scarce, limiting knowledge of developmental stages and best practices for collection and analysis. This scoping review included 39 articles that explored recent methodologies and achievements in oral or signed narratives of DHH children, including comparisons with hearing peers and within-group analyses of early auditory experience, device use, and other measures. Articles featured DHH participants aged < 4 to 18 years, varying

Argument ordering in simple sentences is affected by age of first language acquisition: Evidence from late first language signers of ASL.

Research on the language acquisition of deaf individuals who are exposed to accessible linguistic input at a variety of ages has provided evidence for a sensitive period of first language acquisition. Recent studies have shown that deaf individuals who first learn language after early childhood, late first-language learners (LL1), do not comprehend reversible Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) sentences. The present study analyzed 478 signed productions elicited with pictures depicting simple events with one or two arguments by 28 signers. The argument order patterns of native signers converged with on

Do I belong?: implications of the ASLPI.

The American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) is a widely used assessment tool for academic and professional qualifications in ASL-related fields. In ASL education, most ASL educators are White and able-bodied: this study examines the ASLPI through the lenses of language ideologies, attitudes toward signed languages, and the notion of language boundaries as colonial constructs. Through thematic analysis of interviews with 10 deaf participants, we explored how ASLPI's design, interaction, and evaluation shaped their experiences. Participants reported discomfort and anxiety tied to ra

Ideologies toward CSL: SL perceptions in the 2025 Chinese Spring Festival Gala.

China has been working on the Sign Language (SL) Translation of TV programs. Based on Loh's (2025a) theory of language ideology, this paper uses the accessible retransmission of the 2025 China Media Group Spring Festival Gala as a case study to explore online perceptions of Chinese Sign Language (CSL) among deaf and hearing Chinese. It combines quantitative analysis of public online comments about the CSL interpretation during the Gala with qualitative analysis of online feedback from deaf Chinese. This study finds that although the novel SL Translation improved the public's impression of CSL

[Psychiatric treatment of prelingually deaf and hard-of-hearing people].

Prelingually deaf people are at risk of language deprivation. This may complicate psychiatric evaluation, and treatment in sign language is offered by a specialized national unit. The introduction of cochlear implants has markedly changed opportunities for communication, and the number of sign language users is decreasing. As discussed in this review, the new generations of prelingually deaf may not identify themselves as deaf, but some might have problems with language and communication, and there should still be a focus on this in psychiatric practice.

Impact of deafness on numerical tasks implying visuospatial and verbal processes.

The literature suggests that deaf individuals lag behind their hearing peers in terms of mathematical abilities. However, it is still unknown how unique sensorimotor experiences, like deafness, might shape number-space interactions. We still do not know either the spatial frame of reference deaf individuals use to map numbers onto space in different numerical tasks. To examine these issues, deaf, hearing signer and hearing control adults were asked to perform a number comparison and a parity judgment task with the hands uncrossed and crossed over the body midline. Deafness appears to selective

Counting Differently: Assessing Mathematics Achievement of Signing Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children Through a Unique Lens.

Limited studies exist that connect using signed language with mathematics performance of deaf and hard of hearing children. In the present study, the authors examined 257 participants and compared their results on the Northwest Evaluation Association: Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) to their results on an assessment of American Sign Language (ASL) skills. It was found that better ASL skills tended to result in better MAP performance. These results are moderated by factors such as age, gender, parental hearing status, and learning disability identification.

Word recognition and learning in signing deaf toddlers.

Deaf children acquiring American Sign Language (ASL) perceive both linguistic and non-linguistic information through the visual mode. Thus, signing deaf children face a unique task in word learning, in that mapping objects to referents requires careful allocation of visual attention. This study investigates how perceptual experience and language modality influence both the moment-by-moment and developmental timecourse of word recognition and word learning. We analyzed data from two eyetracking experiments, previously reported in Lieberman, Fitch, and Borovsky (2022). Deaf children (N = 52, 18-

Facilitating literacy development in young children with hearing loss.

Historically, children with hearing loss (HL) are often poor readers. In this article, the authors present two divergent groups of children with HL who have better than average literacy outcomes, children with Pervasive Exposure to Sign Language (PESL) and children who are Auditory-Verbal Communicators (AVCs). Outside-in and inside-in factors contributing to literacy development in the two groups of children are discussed with an emergent literacy perspective. Effective intervention strategies that can be used with all children with HL are highlighted.

Language experience and reading ability modulate word recognition in deaf readers.

For most deaf readers, learning to read is a challenging task. Visual word recognition is crucial during reading; however, little is known about the cognitive mechanism of Chinese deaf readers during visual word recognition. In the present study, two experiments explored the activation of orthographic, phonological, and sign language representations during Chinese word recognition. Eye movements were recorded as participants read sentences containing orthographically similar words, homophones, sign language-related words, or unrelated words. All deaf readers showed shorter reading times for or

Early language experience and modality affect parietal cortex activation in different hemispheres: Insights from hearing bimodal bilinguals.

The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of the age of acquisition (AoA) on functional brain representations of sign language in two exceptional groups of hearing bimodal bilinguals: native signers (simultaneous bilinguals since early childhood) and late signers (proficient sequential bilinguals, who learnt a sign language after puberty). We asked whether effects of AoA would be present across languages - signed and audiovisual spoken - and thus observed only in late signers as they acquired each language at different life stages, and whether effects of AoA would be present during

Interactions of language and cognition in deaf learners: from research to practice.

It is well established that deaf children begin school lagging in general language skills relative to hearing peers, and that deaf and hearing students differ with regard to literacy and other academic skills. These domains are typically treated separately, by different groups of researchers, with little consideration for common factors that might underlie them. It appears, however, that both of these situations might reflect differences in conceptual and content knowledge, as well as linguistic knowledge, between and among deaf and hearing learners. Such differences would clearly contribute t

Age of cochlear implantation and ASL skill impact literacy development.

After decades of research, many researchers (and the parents, educators, and clinicians who rely on the results of their scientific inquiry) maintain opposing views regarding appropriate strategies for ensuring adequate language and literacy development among young deaf children. These viewpoints range from the exclusive use of cochlear implants (with no visual language) to the exclusive use of a visual language (with no implantation). Recent authors have posited the potential benefits of early sign language for implanted children and have refuted claims that signing will negatively impact the

Chinese Pinyin: Overview, History and Use in Language Learning for Young Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in China.

The authors discuss Pinyin, a phonetic system based on the Latin alphabet, as an auxiliary pedagogical tool in literacy instruction in China. They provide a brief history of Pinyin and its educational purposes, then describe how it is used in its spoken/auditory, written, and signed forms by teachers with students who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). Classroom transcripts demonstrate how Pinyin is taught via visual and tactile/kinesthetic tools such as pictures, sign language, and the Chinese Manual Alphabet for purposes of making the phonological information visible to DHH learners.
