Reliability of provocative tests of motion sickness susceptibility.

Accurate prediction of space motion sickness is dependent, in part, upon the reliability of terrestrial-based motion sickness susceptibility tests. In the present study, test-retest reliability values were derived from motion sickness susceptibility scores obtained from two successive exposures to each of three tests: 1) Coriolis Sickness Sensitivity Index (CSSI); 2) Staircase Velocity Movement Test (SVMT); and 3) Parabolic Flight Static Chair Test (PSCT). The reliability of the three tests ranged from 0.70 to 0.88. Normalizing values from predictors with skewed distributions improved the reli

Comparison of different quality factor models for space radiation protection.

Space radiation is considered the biggest threat to astronauts’ health in long-duration space missions, where the main concern is the potential carcinogenic effects from the continuous exposure to Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR). The quality factor ([Formula: see text]) of GCR presents the greatest uncertainty, complicating accurate risk assessment and the establishment of safe radiation exposure standards for astronauts in missions beyond low Earth orbit. This study uses a recently developed analytic microdosimetric model to calculate [Formula: see text] values for space radiation. The influence o

Re-evaluating pharmaceutical stability in space: A biomedical and regulatory science framework for long-duration missions.

Pharmaceutical stability is a critical determinant of crew health and mission success in long-duration spaceflight. Current regulatory frameworks governing drug stability are primarily based on terrestrial testing paradigms, including International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) guidelines, which assume controlled environmental conditions. However, spaceflight introduces unique stressors such as microgravity, ionizing radiation, exposure to the vacuum of space, and operational constraints that are not accounted for in existing models. This study systematically evaluates the limitations of curr

UHAB-1: Physiological responses to a 48-hour spaceflight analog mission underwater.

Underwater habitats (UHABs) are a promising research platform to investigate human performance in spaceflight because they combine isolation, confinement, limited physical activity, and technical life-support demands with real environmental hazards. UHABs accurately replicate several challenges of long-duration spaceflight, including real over perceived isolation, dependency on habitat and technology for survival, and a platform for evaluating novel countermeasures. Here we report the first physiological case study from a 48-hour, single-occupancy underwater habitat (UHAB-1), designed as a pro

Occupational Physical Requirements for Astronauts.

INTRODUCTION: Through the Artemis program, space agencies and astronauts are preparing for extended durations in space and on planetary surfaces, expanding their occupational tasks. Although standardized laboratory tests are effective in assessing health and mitigating deconditioning, their reliability in forecasting occupational performance is uncertain. Consequently, a recent shift in exercise testing has emerged, shifting focus from health-oriented criteria to operational performance. This involves identifying the physical demands associated with components of an astronaut's tasks and deter

Pharmacological countermeasures for long-duration space missions: addressing cardiovascular challenges and advancing space-adapted healthcare.

Future long-duration crewed space missions beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO) will bring new healthcare challenges for astronauts for which pharmacological countermeasures (pharmacological countermeasures) are crucial. This paper highlights current pharmacological countermeasures challenges described in the ESA SciSpacE Roadmap, with a focus on the cardiovascular system as a model to demonstrate the potential implication of the challenges and recommendations. New pharmacological approaches and procedures need to be adapted to spaceflight (spaceflight) conditions, including ethical and reglementary c

Active control of flexible spacecraft in orbit based on partial differential equations.

Flexible spacecraft possess the ability to adapt to complex environments and use energy more efficiently, offering enhanced flexibility and stability in space missions, particularly in tasks with significant external disturbances such as deep space exploration and satellite attitude control. However, vibration suppression in flexible spacecraft remains a critical challenge. This study addresses the problem of vibration suppression in flexible spacecraft systems under external disturbances and input constraints. First, a partial differential equation (PDE) with boundary initial conditions is de

Corneal Edema and the Endothelium in Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: With future manned missions that extend beyond low Earth orbit, it would be wise to anticipate all risks to astronaut health, including those relevant to ophthalmology and the ocular surface. Corneal edema has been documented among mice experiments conducted onboard the Space Transportation System mission, STS-133, owing to increased stress response gene expression. METHODS: A targeted, relevant search of the literature on topics relating to ocular surface and spaceflight was conducted with scholarly databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase from inception to July 2024. Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) and its countermeasures.

Astronauts can develop a distinct collection of neuro-ophthalmic findings during long duration spaceflight, collectively known as Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). These clinical characteristics include optic disc edema, hyperopic refractive shifts, globe flattening, and chorioretinal folds, which may pose a health risk for future space exploration. Obtaining knowledge of SANS and countermeasures for its prevention is crucial for upcoming crewed space missions and warrants a multidisciplinary approach. This review examines the potential causes and countermeasures of SANS, in

Defining spaceflight associated dry eye syndrome (SADES): Mechanisms, complications, and countermeasures.

There is a high prevalence of dry eye-related symptoms among astronauts during spaceflight. We propose naming this phenomenon: Spaceflight Associated Dry Eye Syndrome (SADES). In this study, we review the potential mechanisms of dry eye in the spaceflight environment, categorizing them into external (radiation, environmental hazards) and microgravity-related (meibum outflow) mechanisms. One key mechanism is that microgravity impedes the secretion of meibum, the primary contributor to the tear film lipid layer. SADES may impact the ocular surface due to the positive feedback loop of inflammatio

Exploiting the Unique Biology of Caenorhabditis elegans to Launch Neurodegeneration Studies in Space.

The 21st century is likely to be the first century in which large-scale short- and long-term space missions become common. Accordingly, an ever-increasing body of research is focusing on understanding the effects of current and future space expeditions on human physiology in health and disease. Yet the complex experimental environment, the small number of participants, and the high cost of space missions are among the primary factors that hinder a better understanding of the impact of space missions on human physiology. The goal of our research was to develop a cost-effective, compact, and eas

Sleep-Monitoring Technology Progress and Its Application in Space.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep is an indispensable physiological phenomenon. The complexity of sleep and the time it occupies in human life determine that its quality is positively correlated with human health. Since polysomnography was used in spaceflight in 1967, the sleep problem during astronaut flight has been studied in depth for more than 50 yr, and many solutions have been proposed, but astronauts have always had sleep problems during orbital flight. Insufficient sleep and changes in the rhythm of human sleep-wake activity will lead to disturbance of the human body's internal rhythm indicators, w

Optimizing autonomous artificial intelligence diagnostics for neuro-ocular health in space missions.

Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS) presents a critical risk in long-duration missions, with microgravity-induced changes that threaten astronaut vision and mission outcomes. Current SANS monitoring, limited to pre- and post-flight exams, lacks in-flight diagnostics, highlighting an urgent need for autonomous tools capable of real-time assessment. Grok, an AI platform by xAI, offers promising potential as an advanced diagnostic tool for space-based health monitoring. Originally developed for broader applications, Grok's high-resolution imaging capabilities could be adapted to d

Cosmic chronometers: Is spaceflight a catalyst for biological ageing?

Astronauts returning from space missions often exhibit health issues mirroring age-related conditions, suggesting spaceflight as a potential driver of biological ageing and age-related diseases. To unravel the underlying mechanisms of these conditions, this comprehensive review explores the impact of the space "exposome" on the twelve hallmarks of ageing. Through a meticulous analysis encompassing both space environments and terrestrial analogs, we aim to decipher how different conditions influence ageing hallmarks. Utilizing PubMed, we identified 189 studies and 60 meet screening criteria. Re

Postural adaptation to microgravity underlies fine motor impairment in astronauts' speech.

Understanding the role of anti-gravity behaviour in fine motor control is crucial to achieving a unified theory of motor control. We compare speech from astronauts before and immediately after microgravity exposure to evaluate the role of anti-gravity posture during fine motor skills. Here we show a generalized lowering of vowel space after space travel, which suggests a generalized postural shift of the articulators. Biomechanical modelling of gravitational effects on the vocal tract supports this analysis-the jaw and tongue are pulled down in 1g, but movement trajectories of the tongue are o

Sweat Production During Continuous and Interval Aerobic Exercise.

INTRODUCTION:Aerobic exercise within the habitable volume of small spacecraft needed for space exploration beyond low Earth orbit is expected to challenge the capacity of environmental control systems. Moisture control is a primary concern. Crewmembers will contribute moisture to the cabin environment in the form of sweat while exercising. The effects of continuous aerobic exercise for improving and maintaining aerobic capacity is well characterized. Likewise, evidence suggests that high intensity interval exercise for shorter durations is also effective in building and maintaining aerobic cap

Tolerance of Centrifuge-Simulated Commercial Spaceflight in a Subject with Hemophilia A.

INTRODUCTION: With increasing engagement of commercial spaceflight participants in spaceflight activities, the evaluation of individuals with medical conditions not previously characterized in the spaceflight environment is of particular interest. Factors such as acceleration forces experienced during launch, reentry, and landing of spacecraft could pose an altered risk profile in some individuals due to known disease. Bleeding diatheses present a unique concern in the spaceflight environment given hypergravity exposure and, particularly, the potential for injury resulting from transient or im
