Exploring the relationship between cleft type and speech outcome in 4-to-6-year-olds with non-syndromic cleft palate using different measures: A preliminary report.

Cleft type affects speech outcomes, but exact relationships remain unclear as outcome measures vary. The primary aim was to investigate the relationship between cleft type and speech outcome using different measures in 4-to-6-year-olds with non-syndromic clefts. Secondary aims were to explore the relationships between (i) speech measures used; and (ii) parent perception of speech intelligibility and listener familiarity. Twenty-two pre-schoolers with clefts, plus one parent for each child, were recruited through a hospital outpatient clinic. Children with cleft lip and palate (CLP; n = 11) and

The impact of print exposure on deaf student literacy.

Recent studies suggest that benefiting early from both a cochlear implant (CI) and exposure to cued speech (CS, support system for the perception of oral language) positively impacts deaf children's speech perception, speech intelligibility, and reading. This study aims to show how: 1/CS-based speech perception ("cue reading"), and speech intelligibility might also constitute precise measures for determining the impact of CI and CS on deaf students' literary performance; 2/print exposure might also be a predictive factor in this equation. We conducted regression analyses to examine the impact

The speech abilities and quality of life of Malaysian school-aged children with cleft lip and palate.

PURPOSES: The study investigated the relationship between speech outcomes and quality of life (QoL) among Malay-speaking school-aged children with CLP. METHODOLOGY: Forty-nine children with CLP (age range 7-11 years) completed an online or in-person speech assessment and filled in the CLEFT-Q (Malay Version) questionnaire, which assessed QoL. An experienced SLP rated the nasality and speech intelligibility of the patients' speech samples. RESULTS: Based on the auditory-perceptual ratings, 63.3 % of the children had normal resonance, and 71.5 % had normal or near-normal speech intelligibility

The Role of Somatosensory Information in Speech Perception: Imitation Improves Recognition of Disordered Speech.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace. METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no

Everyday Communication Experiences of Persons With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Their Caregivers: Implications for Novel Speech Interventions.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Speech intelligibility decline is a common in dysarthria secondary to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, interventions that focus on improving speech may not be able to counteract decline as the disease progresses. Researchers have suggested interventions that help PALS's communication partners tune their speech perception systems to PALS's production. In the current study, we take a first step to establishing the need and enthusiasm for such interventions on the part of PALS and their caregivers (CPALS). METHODS: PALS and CPALS recruited from the Greater Philade

Speech patterns in responses to questions asked by an intelligent virtual agent can help to distinguish between people with early stage neurodegenerative disorders and healthy controls.

Previous research has provided strong evidence that speech patterns can help to distinguish between people with early stage neurodegenerative disorders (ND) and healthy controls. This study examined speech patterns in responses to questions asked by an intelligent virtual agent (IVA): a talking head on a computer which asks pre-recorded questions. The study investigated whether measures of response length, speech rate and pausing in responses to questions asked by an IVA help to distinguish between healthy control participants and people diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Alzhei

Responsive Versus Continuous Deep Brain Stimulation for Speech in Essential Tremor: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Responsive deep brain stimulation (rDBS) uses physiological signals to deliver stimulation when needed. rDBS is hypothesized to reduce stimulation-induced speech effects associated with continuous DBS (cDBS) in patients with essential tremor (ET). OBJECTIVE: To determine if rDBS reduces cDBS speech-related side effects while maintaining tremor suppression. METHODS: Eight ET participants with thalamic DBS underwent unilateral rDBS. Both speech evaluations and tremor severity were assessed across three conditions (DBS OFF, cDBS ON, and rDBS ON). Speech was analyzed using intelligib

Short-term audio-tactile training affects cortical auditory speech-envelope tracking for incongruent but not congruent stimuli.

Integrating auditory and visual information can improve intelligibility and neural tracking of the speech envelope. Speech-relevant tactile information also improves tracking, yet effects on intelligibility are mixed, possibly due to no regular exposure to speech-relevant tactile information. We used short-term audio-tactile training to advance understanding of audio-tactile integration during speech perception. 64 younger adult participants (aged 18-29) took part over five days, during which electroencephalography was recorded. Participants completed a speech-in-noise task, with audio-tactile

Frontotemporal activation differs between perception of simulated cochlear implant speech and speech in background noise: An image-based fNIRS study.

In this study we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate neural responses in normal-hearing adults as a function of speech recognition accuracy, intelligibility of the speech stimulus, and the manner in which speech is distorted. Participants listened to sentences and reported aloud what they heard. Speech quality was distorted artificially by vocoding (simulated cochlear implant speech) or naturally by adding background noise. Each type of distortion included high and low-intelligibility conditions. Sentences in quiet were used as baseline comparison. fNIRS data were

Regional Language Speech Recognition from Bone-Conducted Speech Signals through Different Deep Learning Architectures.

Bone-conducted microphone (BCM) senses vibrations from bones in the skull during speech to electrical audio signal. When transmitting speech signals, bone-conduction microphones (BCMs) capture speech signals based on the vibrations of the speaker's skull and have better noise-resistance capabilities than standard air-conduction microphones (ACMs). BCMs have a different frequency response than ACMs because they only capture the low-frequency portion of speech signals. When we replace an ACM with a BCM, we may get satisfactory noise suppression results, but the speech quality and intelligibility

Variable Speech Cueing Effects in Talkers With Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: This study sought to determine the variable effect of three cueing strategies (i.e., loud, clear, or slow speech) on speech intelligibility and perceived speech severity in talkers with dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease (PD). The study also aimed to identify perceptual speech features associated with responses to these speech cues. METHOD: Eighty-four naive listeners rated speech samples of 52 talkers with PD. Each talker's samples consisted of two sentences produced in habitual, loud, clear, and slow speech. Listeners rated intelligibility and speech severity as perceptual outco

The relation of hearing-specific patient-reported outcome measures with speech perception measures and acceptable noise levels in cochlear implant users.

Objective: To investigate the relation of a hearing-specific patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) with speech perception and noise tolerance measurements. It was hypothesised that speech intelligibility in noise and noise tolerance may explain a larger part of the variance in PROM scores than speech intelligibility in quiet.Design: This cross-sectional study used the Speech, Spatial, Qualities (SSQ) questionnaire as a PROM. Speech recognition in quiet, the Speech Reception Threshold in noise and noise tolerance as measured with the acceptable noise level (ANL) were measured with sentences.S
