16S rRNA gene sequencing is a non-culture method of defining the specific bacterial etiology of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an acquired respiratory tract infection following tracheal intubation. The most common hospital-acquired infection among patients with acute respiratory failure, VAP is associated with a mortality rate of 20-30%. The standard bacterial culture method for identifying the etiology of VAP is not specific, timely, or accurate in identifying the bacterial pathogens. This study used 16S rRNA gene metagenomic sequencing to identify and quantify the pathogenic bacteria in lower respiratory tract and oropharyngeal samples of 55 VAP patients. Sequencing of the 16

Characterization and regulation of the genes for a novel anthranilate 1,2-dioxygenase from Burkholderia cepacia DBO1.

Anthranilate (2-aminobenzoate) is an important intermediate in tryptophan metabolism. In order to investigate the degradation of tryptophan through anthranilate by Burkholderia cepacia, several plasposon mutations were constructed of strain DBO1 and one mutant with the plasposon insertion in the anthranilate dioxygenase (AntDO) genes was chosen for further study. The gene sequence obtained from flanking DNA of the plasposon insertion site revealed unexpected information. B. cepacia DBO1 AntDO (designated AntDO-3C) is a three-component Rieske-type [2Fe-2S] dioxygenase composed of a reductase (A

Functional divergence of bacterial communities in root zones of Suaeda salsa in an aged petroleum-polluted area of the Yellow River Delta.

Petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants pose a significant threat to the ecological security of oilfields. In these contaminated habitats, Suaeda salsa is a dominant halophyte of the coastal wetlands and oilfields, which has shown potential in remediation of petroleum polluted saline soils. However, the role of plant-associated microbial communities in pollutant attenuation remains poorly understood, particularly regarding niche-specific responses within the root zone. In this study, bacterial community structures associated with the halophyte Suaeda salsa in China's Yellow River Delta were investiga

Microbial succession is linked to phenylpropanoid remodeling, aroma softening, and quality improvement in naturally aged Artemisia argyi leaves.

Artemisia argyi is an edible, medicinal, and aromatic plant widely used in East Asia, whose leaves are traditionally aged after harvest to improve quality. However, the chemical and microbial basis of this practice remains unclear. Here, we investigated metabolic remodeling, microbial succession, quality formation, and microbial transformation potential during three years of natural postharvest aging using GC-MS, targeted metabolomics, microbial amplicon sequencing, bioactivity assays, and strain-based fermentation validation. Aging progressively reshaped volatile and nonvolatile metabolites a

Response mechanism of microbial community during anaerobic biotransformation of marine toxin domoic acid.

Domoic acid (DA) is a potent neurotoxin produced by toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia blooms and quickly transfers to the benthic anaerobic environment by marine snow particles. DA anaerobic biotransformation is driven by microbial interactions, in which trace amounts of DA can cause physiological stress in marine microorganisms. However, the underlying response mechanisms of microbial community to DA stress remain unclear. In this study, we utilized an anaerobic marine DA-degrading consortium GLY (using glycine as co-substrate) to systematically investigate the global response mechanisms of microbia

Quantification of multi-antibiotic resistant opportunistic pathogenic bacteria in bioaerosols in and around a pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plant.

Pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are thought to be a "seedbed" and reservoirs for multi-antibiotic resistant pathogenic bacteria which can be transmitted to the air environment through aeration. We quantified airborne multi-antibiotic resistance in a full-scale plant to treat antibiotics-producing wastewater by collecting bioaerosol samples from December 2014 to July 2015. Gram-negative opportunistic pathogenic bacteria (GNOPB) were isolated, and antibiotic susceptibility tests against 18 commonly used antibiotics, including 11 β-lactam antibiotics, 3 aminoglycosides, 2 fluor

Mechanism of lactic acid bacterial fertiliser on enhancing growth and selenium absorption of rapeseed revealed by transcriptome analysis and rhizosphere bacterial diversity.

There is a widespread phenomenon of insufficient selenium (Se) intake globally. While Se-enriched bacterial fertilisers have shown potential for biofortification, their integrated effects on plant physiological responses, antioxidant defense, rhizosphere bacterial community assembly, and leaf transcriptomic regulation remain poorly understood. A pot experiment was conducted with three treatments: control (CK), Se fertiliser without bacterial inoculation (S), and Se-enriched bacterial LB-2 fertiliser (L). Plant growth parameters, antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, POD), organic Se convers

Characterization and preservation performance of CMC/PVA active films with Annona muricata leaf extract for frozen Litopenaeus vannamei.

Maintaining the freshness of shrimp, a widely consumed global commodity throughout the supply chain presents a notable challenge. Active packaging incorporating plant-derived extracts, such as soursop (Annona muricata), offers a promising strategy to mitigate quality deterioration. Accordingly, this study developed and characterised carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based films incorporated with A. muricata leaf extract at varying concentrations (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%). The preservative performance of the films during frozen storage was subsequently evaluated in whiteleg

The interaction between litter input and soil microbial community regulates the intraspecific allelopathic effects of Solanum rostratum Dunal.

INTRODUCTION: The "novel weapon hypothesis" posits that invasive plants suppress native species by releasing allelochemicals, which is a crucial factor for their successful invasion. While most studies focus on interspecific allelopathy, with insufficient attention paid to intraspecific allelopathy. METHODS: This study employed an in pot experiment with different litter concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20 g/kg) to cultivate Solanum rostratum Dunal seedlings in both sterilized and unsterilized soils. The plant growth parameters, soil physicochemical properties, soil metabolites, and soil microbial co

Fungal-fermented corn straw as an organic amendment: balancing tomato nutrition, soil functions and antibiotic resistance.

INTRODUCTION: Tomato growers need strategies that improve fruit nutritional quality and soil health while reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers and wasting less crop straw. Fungal-fermented straw products (FSP) are a candidate amendment, but their suitable application rate, placement depth and side effects on soil microbes and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remain unclear. METHODS: An FSP was produced from corn straw via solid-state fermentation for 30 d using Auricularia cornea cv. Yumuer. A single-season greenhouse pot experiment was conducted with an unamended control (no FSP) a

Synergistic control of rapeseed sclerotinia stem rot by Penicillium oxalicum CAD211 and biosynthesized silver nanoparticles through host defense activation and rhizosphere microbiome remodeling.

Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR), caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, severely threatens rapeseed production, while prolonged fungicide use raises safety concerns, highlighting the need for sustainable alternatives. Herein, an indigenous Penicillium oxalicum strain CAD211 was isolated and used to biosynthesize spherical AgNPs (12.73-25.48 nm) with potent dose-dependent antifungal activity against S. sclerotiorum. In vitro assays showed that 20 μg mL-1 AgNPs significantly inhibited mycelial growth and sclerotial germination of S. sclerotiorum. Under controlled pot conditions, the combined application
