Synergistic effect of sodium fluoride and encapsulated calcium lactate on dental erosion-abrasion prevention.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to encapsulate calcium ions in mesoporous silica coated with a polyelectrolyte multilayer, incorporate these particles into an experimental mouthrinse, and evaluate their potential to control dental erosion-abrasion. METHODS: Bovine enamel and dentin specimens were assigned to five groups: NaF (225 ppmF⁻), Ca²⁺ (encapsulated calcium), Ca+F (encapsulated calcium + NaF), F+Sn (225 ppmF⁻; 800 ppmSn²⁺), and Control (distilled water). Fluoride availability was measured using an ion-selective electrode. Specimens underwent a 5-day erosive-abrasive cycling model with citr

Severe wear and tooth loss in wild ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta): a function of feeding ecology, dental structure, and individual life history.

The ring-tailed lemurs at Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar, exhibit a high frequency of severe wear and antemortem tooth loss. As part of a long-term study, we collected dental data on 83 living adult ring-tailed lemurs during 2003 and 2004. Among these individuals, 192 teeth were scored as absent. The most frequently missing tooth position is M1 (24%). As M1 is the first tooth to erupt, its high frequency of absence (primarily a result of wear) is not remarkable. However, the remaining pattern of tooth loss does not correlate with the sequence of eruption. We suggest that this patter

Interplay between experimental dental pellicles and stannous-containing toothpaste on dental erosion-abrasion.

The interaction between stannous-containing dentifrice slurry and experimentally formed pellicles was investigated on enamel and root dentin using an erosion-remineralization-abrasion cycling model. The remineralizing solutions contained no proteins (negative control), mucin, casein, mucin + casein or albumin, for experimental pellicle formation. Toothbrushing was performed with fluoride toothpaste, with (TP + Sn) and without (TP) 3,500 ppm Sn. TP + Sn reduced surface loss for both enamel and root dentin (p < 0.05). The association between TP + Sn and albumin resulted in a significantly lower

Abrasion resistance of titanium nitride coatings formed on titanium by ion-beam-assisted deposition.

To improve the physical properties of the pure titanium surface, thin titanium nitride (TiN) films were deposited by means of ion-beam-assisted deposition. Film structure was confirmed as TiN by X-ray diffraction analysis. Surface hardness and abrasion resistance were significantly improved on TiN-coated specimens. Five combinations of oral hygiene instruments and materials were applied to the specimens as simulations of the oral environment. Treatment with the metal scaler and ultrasonic scaler severely changed the surface features and significantly increased the surface roughness parameters

Gingival recessions caused by lip piercing: case report.

Fear of losing the teeth is common among patients presenting with gingival recession. This report describes a case in which unusual gingival recessions were caused by lip piercing. Periodontal treatment involved removal of the causative agent, hygiene instruction, scaling and root planing, and coverage of the root with a subepithelial connective tissue graft. The therapeutic measures applied in this case yielded satisfactory root coverage, an increase in the width of the keratinized gingiva, improvement in hygiene status and absence of dental hypersensitivity.

Toothpaste and erosion.

Dental erosion develops from the chronic exposure to non-bacterial acids resulting in bulk mineral loss with a partly demineralised surface of reduced micro-hardness. Clinical features are loss of surface structures with shallow lesions on smooth surfaces and cupping and flattening of cusps; already in early stages, coronal dentine often is exposed. Not only enamel, but also dentine is therefore an important target tissue for anti-erosion strategies. The main goal of active ingredients against erosion is to increase the acid resistance of tooth surfaces or pellicles. The challenge with toothpa

The prevalence of cervical tooth wear in patients with bruxism and other causes of wear.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of cervical wear lesions in three groups of patients: bruxists, combined tooth wear, and controls. The hypothesis was that those subjects presenting with bruxism were more likely to develop cervical wear lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 119 subjects, 31 were bruxists with a mean age 48.7 years [standard deviation (SD): 11.6]; 22 had combined wear, aged 43.5 years (14.2); and 66 controls aged 44.9 years (17.0). The clinical appearance of the tooth wear was used to recruit subjects to the bruxist and combined tooth wear groups.

Ultrasonic determination of gingival thickness. Subject variation and influence of tooth type and clinical features.

The objectives of the present study were (I) to determine the validity and reliability of measuring gingival thickness (GTH) with a recently developed, commercially available ultrasonic device; (II) to measure GTH in relation to tooth type and age of proband; (III) to correlate GTH with varying forms of premolars, canines and incisors. Ultrasonic measurements were performed in 200 periodontally healthy, male probands representing 3 different age groups (20-25, 40-45, 55-60 years). In the maxilla, mean GTH varied between 0.9 mm (canines, 1st molars) and 1.3 mm (2nd molars). In the mandible resp

Contingent evolution of thick enamel by kangaroos to resist dietary abrasion.

The late Cenozoic period saw widespread diversification of grazing hoofed mammals characterized by high-crowned molar teeth with low, thinly enameled crests. However, Australia's dominant grazing herbivores, the kangaroos, have much lower-crowned and higher-relief molars that are more akin to some "archaic" placental herbivores. Using x-ray microcomputed tomography scanning, we show that as kangaroos shifted to higher-abrasion grazing diets, their ancestrally vertical, interlocking mode of occlusion favored the acquisition of thick enamel as a durability adaptation. Extant grass-feeding kangar

Failure of tooth eruption in two patients with cerebral palsy and bruxism-a 10-year follow-up: a case report.

The aim of this paper was to analyze delayed tooth eruption in two children with cerebral palsy who had severe bruxism and to determine whether treatment could influence tooth eruption and alignment. Extraction of primary teeth was carried out and orthodontic treatment was considered due to severe tooth wear of primary teeth, lack of space, and development of a class III malocclusion. Analysis was based on clinical examination, photographs, radiographs, and dental casts. In both patients, early mixed dentition was delayed for more than 5 years. Calcification and root development of posterior p

[Dental examination of skulls of the early Middle Ages in Bial-Mett].

UNLABELLED: A systematic dental examination was made on 43 skulls from the 6th/7th and 8th/9th centuries which were excavated by the archeological service of the canton of Berne in the church of Biel-Mett. The examination consisted of the following parameters: Count, loss of teeth, caries (instrumental and radiological), calculus deposits, bone loss. The skulls were classified after age and compared with other findings. Generally speaking the results were comparable to findings of other excavations, but they are more detailed owing to more exact methods of examination. CONCLUSIONS: The examin
