A comparison of health state utility values associated with oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer in Sri Lanka assessed using the EQ-5D-3 L and the EORTC-8D.

BackgroundIt has been suggested that the EQ-5D-3 L preference-based measure of health outcome lacks sensitivity to discriminate between health states in cancer patients. An alternative approach is to use a disease (cancer) specific preference-based measure, such as the EORTC-8D. A limited number of comparisons have been made between generic and disease specific preference-based measures. The aim of this study was to compare the utility scores from the EQ-5D-3 L and the EORTC-8D in a group of patients with oral cancer or with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD).MethodsPatients (n = 151)

Role of miR153 and miR455-5p Expression in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Isolated from Plasma.

BackgroundDespite the notable advances in modern surgery and radiotherapy,no significant increase in the five year survival rate of oral squamous cell carcinoma has been reported. Collecting evidence demonstrates that miR 153 and miR 455-5p play a key role in growth and progression of oral cancer. Early detection of OSCC is important for enhancing patient quality of life and clinical treatment. For this reason, biomarkers or tumour markers offer an opportunity to intervene and avoid development of oral cancer.MethodsA total of 50 blood samples from patients from both genders (25 OSCC and 25 hea

Exploration and Development of PPAR Modulators in Health and Disease: An Update of Clinical Evidence.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are nuclear receptors that govern the expression of genes responsible for energy metabolism, cellular development, and differentiation. Their crucial biological roles dictate the significance of PPAR-targeting synthetic ligands in medical research and drug discovery. Clinical implications of PPAR agonists span across a wide range of health conditions, including metabolic diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases, infections, autoimmune diseases, neurological and psychiatric disorders, and malignancies. In this review we aim to consolidate exist

Current Management and the New Paradigm for ALK+ NSCLC After CROWN.

The 7-year update of the phase 3 CROWN study is the most impressive milestone in anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)+ non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) since the discovery of the oncogene 20 years ago and inaugurates an entire new paradigm. The progression-free survival (PFS) plateau at a high level > 50%, with an estimated very low annual progression rate < 2% after the third year, suggests that lorlatinib can inactivate the disease in most patients. The complete abrogation of on-target resistance abolishes ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) sequencing and will seriously impact future drug dev

Identification of CKS2 and RRM2 as potential markers of vitiligo using bioinformatics analysis.

Previous studies have attempted to elucidate the molecular mechanism of vitiligo; however, its pathogenesis remains unclear. This study aimed to explore biomarkers related to vitiligo through bioinformatic analysis. The microarray datasets GSE53146 and GSE65127 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Firstly, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in GSE53146 were screened, and then an enrichment analysis was performed. Secondly, the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of DEGs was constructed using the STRING database, and the key genes were screened using the MCODE plu

Proliferative activity and loss of function of tumour suppressor genes as 'biomarkers' in diagnosis and prognosis of benign and preneoplastic oral lesions and oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Oral cancer is a disease of the elderly and is closely connected with cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption. Since the successful introduction of multidisciplinary treatment, the survival rate has not changed. Because of the high mortality and potentially disfiguring treatment, today's efforts are aimed at eliminating risk factors, chemoprophylaxis, improvement in diagnostic procedures, and understanding of the genetic mechanisms of oral carcinogenesis. Immunohistochemical and molecular biology analysis of biopsy tissue and cell lines of preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions that originate

Atezolizumab alleviates the immunosuppression induced by PD‑L1‑positive neutrophils and improves the survival of mice during sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Until recently, tumors of the clivus and the anterior region of the posterior cranial fossa were considered extremely difficult to access and often inoperable using standard transcranial approaches. With the introduction into the neurosurgical practice of minimally invasive methods utilizing endoscopic techniques, it became possible to effectively remove hard-to-reach tumors, including central tumors of the anterior region of the posterior cranial fossa. METHODS: From 2008 to the present time, the inpatient institution has operated on 140 patients with various tumors of the base o

Implementing Curcumin in Translational Oncology Research.

Most data published on curcumin and curcumin-based formulations are very promising. In cancer research, the majority of data has been obtained in vitro. Less frequently, researchers used experimental animals. The results of several clinical studies are conclusive, and these studies have established a good foundation for further research focusing on implementing curcumin in clinical oncology. However, the issues regarding timely data reporting and lack of disclosure of the exact curcumin formulations used in these studies should not be neglected. This article is a snapshot of the current status

Potential New Cancer Immunotherapy: Anti-CD47-SIRPα Antibodies.

CD47 belongs to immunoglobulin superfamily and is widely expressed on the surface of cell membrane, while another transmembrane protein SIRPα is restricted to the surface of macrophages, dendritic cells, and nerve cells. As a cell surface receptor and ligand, respectively, CD47 and SIRPα interact to regulate cell migration and phagocytic activity, and maintain immune homeostasis. In recent years, studies have found that immunoglobulin superfamily CD47 is overexpressed widely across tumor types, and CD47 plays an important role in suppressing phagocytes activity through binding to the transmemb

Is Systemic Immunosuppression a Risk Factor for Oral Cancer? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Even if the relationship between immunosuppression and increased incidence of systemic cancers is well known, there is less awareness about the risk of developing oral cancer in immunosuppressed patients. The aim of this review was to evaluate the association between immunosuppression and the development of oral cancer. Two authors independently and, in duplicate, conducted a systematic literature review of international journals and electronic databases (MEDLINE via OVID, Scopus, and Web of Science) from their inception to 28 April 2023. The assessment of risk of bias and overall quality of e

Xerostomia due to systemic disease: a review of 20 conditions and mechanisms.

Xerostomia is a common complaint of nearly half of the elderly population and about one-fifth of younger adults. It causes several signs and symptoms, and compromise oral functions and health-related quality-of-life. Multiple reasons are proposed to describe the etiology of xerostomia such as local factors, psychogenic factors, and systemic diseases. In order to manage xerostomia effectively, identification of the main causality is mandatory. The aim of this review was to present systemic diseases leading to xerostomia with their mechanisms of action. We used various general search engines and
