Risk factors for breast cancer in women in northern Alberta, Canada, as related to age at diagnosis.

A population-based case-control study involving interviews with 577 female breast cancer patients and 826 controls in northern Alberta. Canada, revealed that some determinants of breast cancer varied according to age. Among women under age 45, risk factors included a younger age at menarche, late age at last birth, high parity, and recent use of oral contraceptives. At older ages risk was related to natural as opposed to surgical menopause, late age at first birth, low parity, late age at natural menopause, and tonsillectomy. At all ages there was an increased risk of breast cancer associated

Clinical evaluation of an automated Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS)-scoring system.

BACKGROUND: The Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) is widely established to assess early ischemic changes on non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) and guide treatment decisions in acute stroke. While automated ASPECTS tools are increasingly available, independent validation and the potential influence on human ratings remain important. The aim of this study was to evaluate agreement between an automated ASPECTS scoring system and expert readers and to examine whether software assistance was associated with a systematic shift in human ASPECTS scoring. METHODS: W

Evaluating Canada's initiative of enhanced screening for tuberculosis infection in migrants: Implementation lessons from Alberta.

BACKGROUND: The domestic tuberculosis (TB) disease burden in high-income, low TB-incidence countries is largely driven by the reactivation of remotely acquired TB infections (TBIs) in people born outside the country (PBOC). In Canada, PBOC now accounts for more than three quarters of annual active TB diagnoses. To prevent some of this disease experience, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) rolled out a new TBI screening initiative in 2019. OBJECTIVE: An evaluation of TB outcomes among individuals referred through this initiative between May 2019 and May 2023 in Alberta, Canada

Putative avian teeth from the Late Cretaceous of Alberta, Canada, are more likely from crocodilians.

Isolated teeth, previously referred to Aves, are more common than other bird fossils from the Late Cretaceous of Alberta. However, there are no known morphological synapomorphies that distinguish isolated bird teeth, and features of these teeth are generally shared with those of non-avian theropods and crocodilians. Here, specimens ranging from Late Santonian to Late Maastrichtian in age are described and qualitatively categorized into morphotypes, most of which strongly resemble teeth of extant juvenile and some fossil crocodilians. Variation within this sample of teeth may therefore reflect

Mental health experiences with COVID-19 public health measures in an Alberta First Nations Community.

BACKGROUND: First Nations (FN) people of Canada experience health, social, and systemic inequities due to colonization. Consequently, COVID-19 has placed further mental health stress on people related to personal finances, employment security and worry over infection, resulting in exacerbated effects of unresolved past medical and physical traumas. This study aims to understand the experiences related to mental health in an Alberta FN community during the early stages of the pandemic. METHODS: In partnership with FN leadership, the study implemented an online cross-sectional survey. Adults fr

Obesity, Comorbidities, and the Associated Risk among Patients Who Underwent Total Knee Arthroplasty in Alberta.

Obesity, a common risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA), accelerates joint deterioration resulting in the need for early total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The role of obesity in the management of OA remains a controversial topic. In this study, we examined whether obesity along with other comorbidities is associated with peri/postoperative complications in patients who underwent primary unilateral TKA in Alberta, Canada. A retrospective secondary analysis was performed on data extracted from data repository of patients (n = 15,151) who underwent TKA between 2012 and 2016. The sample was divided int

Phosphoglycerate kinase deficiency: biochemical and molecular genetic studies in a new myopathic variant (PGK Alberta).

Biochemical analysis of muscle in a 37-year-old man with exercise intolerance, myalgia, recurrent myoglobinuria, and retinitis pigmentosa showed phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) deficiency. Kinetic and physical characteristics of the mutant enzyme differed from those of two previously reported cases, suggesting a distinct mutation. Southern blot analysis showed similar bands in patient and control, but Northern blot analysis of muscle mRNA showed an abnormally large message. These data demonstrate that PGK deficiency is clinically, biochemically, and genetically heterogeneous.

Aqueous- and solid-phase molybdenum geochemistry of oil sands fluid petroleum coke deposits, Alberta, Canada.

Fluid petroleum coke generated at oil sands operations in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region of northern Alberta, Canada, contains elevated concentrations of molybdenum (Mo) and other metals including nickel (Ni) and vanadium (V). Solid-phase Mo concentrations in fluid petroleum coke are typically 10 to 100 times lower than V and Ni, yet dissolved Mo concentrations in associated pore waters are often comparable with these metals. We collected pore water and solids from fluid petroleum coke deposits in the AOSR to examine geochemical controls on Mo mobility. Dissolved Mo concentrations increased wi

Prevalence rates of spina bifida in Alberta, Canada: 2001-2015. Can we achieve more prevention?

BACKGROUND: Despite a substantial prevention of neural tube defects with mandatory folic acid (FA) fortification, a significant number of cases still exist in Alberta, Canada, particularly spina bifida (SB). The purpose of this study was to review cases with SB to provide a possible explanation as to why SB is still prevalent in Alberta. METHODS: Cases with SB born between 2001 and 2015, ascertained by the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System, were reviewed. Cases were classified as lipomeningomyelocele, syndrome/recognized condition, chromosome, associated multiple congenital ano

Oslerus osleri (metastrongyloidea; filaroididae) in gray wolves (Canis lupus) from Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.

Oslerus osleri is a filaroid parasite of the respiratory tract of canids. In North America, it is most commonly reported from coyotes (Canis latrans) and domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), but reports in gray wolves (Canis lupus) are infrequent. We report a new geographic record for O. osleri in four gray wolves from Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Adult nematodes found in nodules in the submucosa of the trachea and bronchi were identified as O. osleri based on morphometry of spicules of males. We sequenced two segments of the genome of adult nematodes: a 1,111-base pair (bp) segmen

Composition, diversity, and stability of microbial assemblages in seasonal lake ice, miquelon lake, central alberta.

The most familiar icy environments, seasonal lake and stream ice, have received little microbiological study. Bacteria and Eukarya dominated the microbial assemblage within the seasonal ice of Miquelon Lake, a shallow saline lake in Alberta, Canada. The bacterial assemblages were moderately diverse and did not vary with either ice depth or time. The closest relatives of the bacterial sequences from the ice included Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Cyanobacteria. The eukaryotic assemblages were less conserved and had very low diversity. Green algae relatives d

Trends in nosocomial bloodstream infections following health care restructuring in Alberta between 1999 and 2005.

OBJECTIVE: A previous study at the University of Alberta Hospital/Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, revealed an increase in hospital-acquired bloodstream infection (BSI) rates associated with an increase in patient acuity during a period of public health care delivery restructuring between 1993 and 1996. The present study assessed trends in BSIs since the end of the restructuring. DESIGN: Prospective surveillance for BSIs was performed using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA) criteria for infection. BSI cases between January 1, 1999, and December 31, 2005, were

The correlates and rate of readmission six months post-discharge from inpatient psychiatric units in Alberta.

BACKGROUND: Hospital readmission rates have been proposed as an indicator of quality of care within inpatient psychiatric services. Numerous factors may predict readmissions into acute psychiatric care. Minimizing the risk factors linked to psychiatric readmissions can help develop preventive intervention strategies that enhance patient safety, improve quality of care and well-being, and help control healthcare costs. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to assess the rate and correlates of readmission six months post-discharge from inpatient psychiatric units. METHODS: This study emplo
