Is It Good to Have a Stiff Aorta with Aging? Causes and Consequences.

Aortic stiffness increases with advancing age, more than doubling during the human life span, and is a robust predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) clinical events independent of traditional risk factors. The aorta increases in diameter and length to accommodate growing body size and cardiac output in youth, but in middle and older age the aorta continues to remodel to a larger diameter, thinning the pool of permanent elastin fibers, increasing intramural wall stress and resulting in the transfer of load bearing onto stiffer collagen fibers. Whereas aortic stiffening in early middle age ma

Superconducting nanowire single-photon sensing of cerebral blood flow.

Significance: The ability of diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF) in humans is hindered by the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the method. This limits the high acquisition rates needed to resolve dynamic flow changes and to optimally filter out large pulsatile oscillations and prevents the use of large source-detector separations ( ≥ 3    cm ), which are needed to achieve adequate brain sensitivity in most adult subjects. Aim: To substantially improve SNR, we have built a DCS device that operates at 1064 nm and uses superconducting nanowire single-pho

Outcomes of patients suffering unwitnessed hypothermic cardiac arrest rewarmed with extracorporeal life support: A systematic review.

Prolonged cardiac arrest (CA) may lead to neurologic deficit in survivors. Good outcome is especially rare when CA was unwitnessed. However, accidental hypothermia is a very specific cause of CA. Our goal was to describe the outcomes of patients who suffered from unwitnessed hypothermic cardiac arrest (UHCA) supported with Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS). We included consecutive patients' cohorts identified by systematic literature review concerning patients suffering from UHCA and rewarmed with ECLS. Patients were divided into four subgroups regarding the mechanism of cooling, namely: air

Outcome after severe accidental hypothermia in the French Alps: A 10-year review.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the factors associated with outcome after accidental deep hypothermia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study on patients with accidental hypothermia (core temperature <28 °C) admitted to a Level I emergency room over a 10-year period. RESULTS: Forty-eight patients were included with a median temperature of 26 °C (range, 16.3-28 °C) on admission. The etiology of hypothermia was exposure to a cold environment (n = 27), avalanche (n = 13) or immersion in cold water (n = 8). Mean age was 47 ± 22 years, and 58% were males. Thirty-two patients had a cardiac arre

Vector competence studies with hard ticks and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato spirochetes: A review.

Use of emerging technology allowing for identification of genetic material from pathogens and endosymbionts in ticks collected from humans, domestic animals, wildlife, or the environment has resulted in an avalanche of new data on tick-microorganism associations. This rapidly growing stream of new information is a tremendous resource but also presents challenges, including how detection of pathogen genetic material in ticks should best be interpreted. There is a tendency in the more recent published literature to incorrectly use the term "vector" based on detection of pathogen genetic material

The Impact of the Drug Epidemic on the Incidence of Sepsis in West Virginia.

Introduction Drug abuse and overdoses are on the rise in West Virginia. Multiple socioeconomic and prescription-prescribing practices influenced this shift. The shifting burden of intravenous drug use to more rural areas has created unique challenges for patient access (medical attention, addiction education, rehabilitation), as well as created an avalanche of additional costs for hospital networks. Methods We analyzed sepsis cases from 2006 to 2015 to investigate whether different types of drug use have increased the odds of developing sepsis as compared to other forms of drug use. To investi

Machine Learning-Based Human Detection Using Active Non-Line-of-Sight Laser Sensing.

Active non-line-of-sight (NLOS) human detection aims to infer the presence of hidden individuals by analyzing indirectly reflected photons between a relay surface and occluded targets. In this study, a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC)-based acquisition system were used to measure time-photon waveforms in controlled NLOS environments designed to represent post-disaster rubble scenarios. Although the effective temporal resolution of the system is limited by the detector timing jitter and laser pulse width, the recorded transient signals reta

A two-stage algebraic framework for designing cryptographically strong S-boxes for secure image encryption.

The security of modern block ciphers heavily relies on the cryptographic strength of Substitution boxes (S-boxes), which introduce non-linearity and confusion. While numerous methods for S-box generation exist, there is a continuous pursuit of designs that offer a superior and balanced profile against various cryptanalytic attacks. This paper presents a new, two-step approach to the construction of highly nonlinear S-boxes, with group-theoretic underpinnings. During the first step, we use a parameterized permutation representation of the triangle group Δ(2,3,43) on the projective line over the

An optimized novel lightweight block cipher for image encryption.

In the era of pervasive multimedia communication, image data has become a dominant form of information exchange across embedded, mobile, and IoT platforms. This surge in visual data transmission introduces critical challenges related to confidentiality, authenticity, and tamper resistance particularly in resource-constrained environments where conventional cryptographic solutions may prove computationally intensive. To address these challenges, lightweight cryptographic algorithms tailored for image protection are essential, balancing rigorous security requirements with efficient hardware and

A novel color images security-based on SPN over the residue classes of quaternion integers [Formula: see text].

The exponential growth of multimedia data transmission has intensified the demand for advanced image encryption systems capable of resisting contemporary cryptanalytic attacks while maintaining computational efficiency. Conventional encryption schemes often fail to provide sufficient confusion and diffusion when applied to high-dimensional color images. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a novel Substitution-Permutation Network (SPN)-based RGB image encryption algorithm constructed over the residue classes of quaternion integers (RQCI's) [Formula: see text] The method specifical

Medial intracranial carotid artery calcifications and hematoma expansion in deep intracerebral hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Medial intracranial carotid artery calcifications (ICAC) are associated with impaired vascular physiology, increased arterial stiffness and pulse pressure. Their presence might therefore be associated with increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) expansion, according to the avalanche model. We explored the association between ICAC presence and pattern and hematoma expansion (HE). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a monocentric, prospectively collected cohort of ICH patients admitted between June 2017 and October 2023. ICAC pattern was determined by Kockelkoren's rating sc

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for accidental deep hypothermia-current challenges and future perspectives.

The incidence of accidental hypothermia (core temperature ≤35 °C) is difficult to estimate, as the affected population is heterogeneous. Both temperature and clinical presentation should be considered while determining severity, which is difficult in a prehospital setting. Extracorporeal rewarming is advocated for all Swiss Staging System class IV (hypothermic cardiac arrest) and class III (hypothermic cardiac instability) patients. Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the method of choice, as it not only allows a gradual, controlled increase of core body temperature, bu

Integrating photonics with silicon nanoelectronics for the next generation of systems on a chip.

Electronic and photonic technologies have transformed our lives-from computing and mobile devices, to information technology and the internet. Our future demands in these fields require innovation in each technology separately, but also depend on our ability to harness their complementary physics through integrated solutions1,2. This goal is hindered by the fact that most silicon nanotechnologies-which enable our processors, computer memory, communications chips and image sensors-rely on bulk silicon substrates, a cost-effective solution with an abundant supply chain, but with substantial limi

Small animal simultaneous PET/MRI: initial experiences in a 9.4 T microMRI.

We developed a non-magnetic positron-emission tomography (PET) device based on the rat conscious animal PET that operates in a small-animal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, thereby enabling us to carry out simultaneous PET/MRI studies. The PET detector comprises 12 detector blocks, each being a 4 × 8 array of lutetium oxyorthosilicate crystals (2.22 × 2.22 × 5 mm(3)) coupled to a matching non-magnetic avalanche photodiode array. The detector blocks, housed in a plastic case, form a 38 mm inner diameter ring with an 18 mm axial extent. Custom-built MRI coils fit inside the positron-emi

Non-contact Oxygenation Assessment of Biological Tissues Based on a Time-of-Flight Method.

UNLABELLED: Assessment of oxygen saturation for biological tissues is crucial in many medical applications. A non-contact oxygenation measurement is important in clinical scenarios, for example, emergency situations and imaging-guided surgery, because non-contact measurement will speed up the measurement preparation by eliminating the need for cleaning skin and sensor for hygrine and placement of sensor. Near-infrared spectroscopy stands out as a key technology for probing tissue oxygenation. Non-contact measurement requires precise estimation of the distance between the tissue and the probe.

Time-resolved laser speckle contrast imaging (TR-LSCI) of cerebral blood flow response to intracranial pressure elevation.

SIGNIFICANCE: Cerebral autoregulation (CA) reflects the dynamic coupling among cerebral blood flow (CBF), intracranial pressure (ICP), and arterial blood pressure (ABP); its failure contributes to secondary brain injury. Existing bedside methods rely on indirect or spatially limited CBF surrogates and cannot resolve microvascular flow dynamics across space, depth, and time. AIM: To develop, optimize, and apply a scalable, noncontact time-resolved laser speckle contrast imaging (TR-LSCI) platform for depth-sensitive, high-speed, wide-field CBF imaging during controlled ICP perturbations. Accuracy of Tissue Oxygen Saturation Measurements of a Textile-Based NIRS Sensor.

Pressure injuries (PI) are dangerous tissue lesions that heal very slowly and pose a high risk of serious infections. They are caused by pressure applied to the tissue, which stops blood circulation and therefore induces hypoxia, i.e., low tissue oxygen saturation (StO2). PI cause severe suffering and are expensive to treat. Hence it is essential to prevent them with a device that detects a dangerous situation, e.g., by measuring StO2 using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). For such a device to be wearable without causing PI, it must not introduce pressure points itself. This can be achieved

Early Pacemaker Implantation after Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Impact of PlasmaBlade™ for Prevention of Device-Associated Bleeding Complications.

Background and Objectives: Permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) is frequently required following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) or oral anticoagulation therapy (OAK) is often necessary in these patients since they are at higher risk of thromboembolic events due to TAVR implantation, high incidence of coronary artery diseases (CAD) with the necessity of coronary intervention, and high rate of atrial fibrillation with the need of stroke prevention. We sought to evaluate the safety, efficiency, and clinical outcomes of early PPI following TAVR us
