Basal body temperature as a biomarker of reproductive state in ewes: A multi-method comparison.

This study quantified body temperature dynamics throughout reproductive stages in crossbred ewes based on complementary monitoring techniques. Five ewes from a semi-extensive farming system were included in two sub-trials: animals were first assessed in the prepubertal stage and, subsequently, an oestrous cycle was induced by intravaginal progesterone sponges followed by eCG and prostaglandin; oestrous was confirmed by serum progesterone. Temperatures were recorded in five stages (prepubertal, pubertal, sponge, post-sponge, oestrous) based on eight measurements: rectal (RT), subcutaneous biolo

Changes in Body Temperature Patterns Are Predictive of Mortality in Septic Shock: An Observational Study.

Biological rhythms are important regulators of immune functions. In intensive care unit (ICU), sepsis is known to be associated with rhythm disruption. Our objectives were to determine factors associated with rhythm disruption of the body temperature and to assess the relationship between temperature and mortality in septic shock patients; In a cohort of septic shock, we recorded body temperature over a 24-h period on day 2 after ICU admission. For each patient, the temperature rhythmicity was assessed by defining period and amplitude, and the adjusted average (mesor) of the temperature by sin

Changes in Body Surface Temperature Play an Underappreciated Role in the Avian Immune Response.

AbstractFever and hypothermia are well-characterized components of systemic inflammation. However, our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying such changes in body temperature is largely limited to rodent models and other mammalian species. In mammals, high dosages of an inflammatory agent (e.g., lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) typically leads to hypothermia (decrease in body temperature below normothermic levels), which is largely driven by a reduction in thermogenesis and not changes in peripheral vasomotion (i.e., changes in blood vessel tone). In birds, however, hypothermia occurs frequently, eve

The effect of body surface area exposure to menthol on temperature regulation and perception in men.

INTRODUCTION: In warm conditions topical application of menthol increases cool sensations and influences deep body temperature. The purpose of this experiment was to explore whether different body surface areas (BSA) exposed to menthol influence these responses. It was hypothesized that the forcing function exerted by menthol will be proportionally related to BSA. METHOD: Using a within-participant design, 13 participants underwent three BSA exposures (Small [S; finger]; Medium [M; arm]; Large [L; upper/lower body]) to 4.13% menthol, and one Placebo exposure. During each exposure participants

Effects of Changes in Body Temperature on Perioperative Bleeding in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Surgery.

Perioperative bleeding is a critical challenge in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) surgery. Preventing hypothermia is associated with decreased development of coagulopathy, blood transfusion rate in various surgery groups. We hypothesized that blood loss would be reduced in patients who were kept normothermic by implementation of aggressive warming methods in AIS. This randomized-controlled study included patients aged 12-18 years who were scheduled to undergo elective scoliosis deformity correction surgery. The patients were divided into two groups: the study group (Group S) was heated a

Comparison between rectal and body surface temperature in dogs by the calibrated infrared thermometer.

Because dogs tolerate conventional rectal temperature measurements poorly, a calibrated infrared thermometer was tested for assessing canine body surface temperature. Body surface temperature of 204 dogs was estimated on various sites (digit, snout, axilla, eye, gum, inguinal region, and anal verge). Having rectal temperature as the gold standard, temperature difference, Spearman's correlation coefficient, hyperthermia and hypothermia detection sensitivity and specificity, and stress response score was calculated for each measurement site. Although the canine body surface temperature was consi

Effect of Anesthesia Applied for Magnetic Resonance Imaging on the Body Temperature of Pediatric Patients.

Objective Anesthesia may be required to ensure the immobility of the patient during a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, particularly in pediatric patients. An MRI scanner generates radiofrequency radiation (RFR) to obtain images of parts of the body. During an MRI procedure, an amount of RFR is transformed into heat by the body, thereby leading to increased body temperature. However, patients are at increased risk of hypothermia due to the impairment of thermoregulation by anesthesia and the cold and dry environment of the MRI room. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of

O-Mannosylation of Proteins Enables Histoplasma Yeast Survival at Mammalian Body Temperatures.

The ability to grow at mammalian body temperatures is critical for pathogen infection of humans. For the thermally dimorphic fungal pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum, elevated temperature is required for differentiation of mycelia or conidia into yeast cells, a step critical for invasion and replication within phagocytic immune cells. Posttranslational glycosylation of extracellular proteins characterizes factors produced by the pathogenic yeast cells but not those of avirulent mycelia, correlating glycosylation with infection. Histoplasma yeast cells lacking the Pmt1 and Pmt2 protein mannosyltr

Gender determination using barr bodies from teeth exposed to high temperatures.

CONTEXT: Gender determination forms a prime step in the forensic identification process. Teeth form a very important identification aid in forensic studies because they are protected by oral tissues and dental pulp is further protected by the mineralized constituents of the teeth. This allows the conservation and sustainable production of dental pulp to help sex determination in circumstances where other tissues cannot be analyzed like victims when exposed to high temperatures during fire accidents, explosions, and other mass disasters. AIM: The present study aimed at gender determination fro

Optimization of a pain model: effects of body temperature and anesthesia on bladder nociception in mice.

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a debilitating urological condition that is resistant to treatment and poorly understood. To determine novel molecular treatment targets and to elucidate the contribution of the nervous system to IC/BPS, many rodent bladder pain models have been developed. In this study we evaluated the effects of anesthesia induction and temperature variation in a mouse model of bladder pain known as urinary bladder distension (UBD). In this model compressed air is used to distend the bladder to distinct pressures while electrodes record the reflexive vi

High and low body temperature during the initiation of ventilation for near-term lambs.

AIMS: Recent literature suggests hypothermia may protect against lung injury. We evaluated body temperature as a variable in lung inflammation due to oxygenation and mechanical ventilation following delivery of near-term lambs. METHODS: Twin fetuses were randomized prior to delivery at 140 d GA (term 150 d): unventilated controls, normothermic ventilated with room air, normothermic ventilated with 100% oxygen, low temperature ventilated (target 35 degrees C) with 100% oxygen, and high temperature (target 40 degrees C) with 100% oxygen. Lambs were intubated for gentle mechanical ventilation (t

The effect of a rise in body temperature on the central-chemoreflex ventilatory response to carbon dioxide.

We assessed the central-chemoreflex ventilatory responses to carbon dioxide in six male volunteers using a hyperoxic rebreathing technique. Hyperventilation prior to rebreathing allowed both the threshold and the sensitivity of the response to be measured. We used immersion in water to control the body temperature (tympanic). The water temperature was adjusted to be either thermo-neutral or hot so that body temperature either remained normal [+0.2 (0.04) degrees C, mean (SEM)] or was elevated by 1.5 (0.08) degrees C. The sensitivities of the central-chemoreflex ventilatory responses to carbon

Sleep fragmentation, and changes in locomotor activity and body temperature in trypanosome-infected rats.

The rest-activity and body temperature 24 h cycles, as well as the structure of spontaneous sleep, were studied in rats 3 weeks after infection with monomorphic Trypanosoma brucei brucei. This parasite belongs to the species of trypanosomes that causes in humans African sleeping sickness, a neuropsychiatric syndrome that involves alterations of endogenous biological rhythms. In the infected rats, entrained to a 12 h:12 h photoperiod, a considerable hypokinesia was detected during the hours of darkness. A significant oscillation of the body temperature during 24 h was lost in some infected anim

Effect of sex steroids on body temperature in postmenopausal women. Role of endogenous opioids.

The role of endogenous opioids on the thermoregulatory effect of sex steroids was investigated in six postmenopausal women before and during treatment with transdermal 17 B-estradiol (TTS 50; 50 mcg/day) with or without vaginal progesterone (P4; 100 mg twice daily). In all the different endocrine conditions, saline or the opioid antagonist naloxone (10 mg/hr. preceded by 10 mg iv bolus) were randomly infused for 4 hrs., on two consecutive days. Measurements of body temperature (BT) variations were performed by a thermistor probe placed in the rectum. BT did not significantly vary from baseline

The importance of disease induced changes in mammalian body temperature to mosquito blood feeding.

Laboratory mice infected with rodent malaria (Plasmodium berghei or P. chabaudi) or St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) were not hyperthermic during the infection period. However, all infected animals displayed pathogen-specific periods of hypothermia. Hamsters infected with P. berghei were hyperthermic on day 7 postinfection (PI) but became hypothermic on day 8 PI and remained so until death, approximately 20 days PI. Body temperatures of mice infected with P. yoelii were not significantly different from those of uninfected control mice. Mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi and Culex

Influence of body temperature on the set-up and recovery of noise-induced cochlea damage.

Hypothermia during exposure to noise reduced hair-cell damage which, on the contrary, was prevented from recovering by narcosis and hypothermia. Hyperthermia is apparently able to eliminate the narcosis dependent limitation of metabolism. A noise damage happens to develop by decompensating the excessively overburdened metabolism, whereas recovery seems to depend on the availability of a highly intracellular level of biological energy.

Metabolic, respiratory, vasomotor and body temperature responses to beta-endorphin and morphine in rabbits.

1. The effects of beta-endorphin and morphine on thermoregulatory responses of unanaesthetized rabbits to different ambient temperatures (Ta) of 2, 22 and 32 degrees C were assessed. 2. Intraventricular administration of either beta-endorphin or morphine produced dose-dependent hypothermia at 2 and 22 degrees C Ta. At 2 degrees C Ta the hypothermia was brought about solely by a decrease in metabolic heat production. At 22 degrees C Ta the hypothermia was due to a decrease in metabolism and an increase in peripheral blood flow. However, at 32 degrees C Ta, there were no changes in rectal temper
