Medical stakeholder perspectives on implementing a computerized battery to identify neurocognitive impairments among youth in Botswana.

HIV infection and in utero exposure, common in Sub-Saharan Africa, are associated with pediatric neurocognitive impairment. Cognitive screening can identify impairments, but it is rarely used in this setting. The Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (PennCNB), an evidence-based cognitive screening tool, was adapted for use in Botswana. To facilitate future implementation, 20 semi-structured interviews were conducted to elicit key stakeholders' perspectives on factors likely to be related to successful uptake of the PennCNB in clinical settings. An integrated analytic approach combining con

The utility of a modified WHO TB screening tool among children at a Botswana child welfare clinic.

BACKGROUND: In high TB/HIV settings, the increased risk for TB amongst children exposed to HIV has been established through biomedical tests. Screening HIV exposed children for TB can improve early childhood TB detection and treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the utility of a modified World Health Organization (WHO) tool by including HIV variables, to determine TB exposure amongst HIV exposed children presenting to a "Well Child" Clinic (CWC). METHODS: Clinical data were obtained from medical records and/or from the caregivers of children presenting to CWC. Data was analyzed to explor

Distribution of Anopheles mosquito species, their vectorial role and profiling of knock-down resistance mutations in Botswana.

Knowledge of vector species composition and monitoring their change over time is critical to evaluate malaria transmission and assess control interventions. This is especially important in countries such as Botswana, where malaria transmission is subjected to fluctuations due to climate variability. Another important aspect that impacts vector populations is the insecticide resistance. In order to assess species composition and the presence of mutations associated with insecticide resistance, Anopheles specimens from larval samplings and indoor pyrethrum spray sheet collections were analysed.

The relationship between adverse childhood experiences and depression: A cross-sectional survey with university students in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with severe life-long negative outcomes, including depression. Particularly in low- and middle-income countries, few studies have been conducted to assess the impact of ACEs. AIM: To assess the influence of ACEs on depression among young adults. SETTING: Participants were students at a large university in Gaborone, Botswana. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, we investigated the associations between ACEs and depression in young adults in Botswana (n = 392, mean age = 22.2, ± 2.5, 53.4% female). Bivariate correlation analy

Association of Adolescent- and Parent-Reported Relationship Functioning with HIV Sexual Risk Among Adolescents in Botswana.

Globally, adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa are the youth most affected by HIV. Parent-adolescent relationships can be protective in child and adolescent development and may be implicated in lowered adolescent HIV sexual risk. However, the importance of parental and adolescent perceptions of their relationship and assessing the implications of family functioning in adolescents' risk for HIV or other sexually transmitted infections are not well established in the research literature. This dyadic study simultaneously assessed both parents' and adolescents' perceptions of family functioning and t

Seroprevalence of viral and vector-borne bacterial pathogens in domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) in northern Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) have the potential to act as disease reservoirs for wildlife and are important sentinels for common circulating pathogens. Therefore, the infectious disease seroprevalence among domestic dogs in northern Botswana may be indicative of pathogen exposure of various wildlife species. The objective of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of Ehrlichia spp., Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma spp., Dirofilaria immitis, canine adenovirus, canine parvovirus, and canine distemper virus in domestic dogs as proxies of disease prevalence in the local wildlif

Assessing Nurses' Adherence to the See-and-Treat Guidelines of Botswana's National Cervical Cancer Prevention Programme.

The see-and-treat approach for cervical cancer screening [visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) followed by immediate cryotherapy] was first pilot tested in Botswana in 2009. Botswana's Ministry of Health and the Botswana-UPenn Partnership collaborated to expand see-and-treat to five additional sites throughout the country in 2014. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether nurses' adherence to guideline-based screening was maintained during scale-up. Therefore, we compared nurses' adherence between the pilot and scaled-up sites and determined main drivers of nonadherence across all

Brief Report: High Rates of Adverse Birth Outcomes in HIV and Syphilis Coinfected Women in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the combined impact of HIV/syphilis coinfection on birth outcomes. METHODS: Antenatal HIV and syphilis test results, obstetric history, and infant birth outcomes were collected from obstetric records in maternity wards in Botswana between 2008 and 2011 (5 sites) and 2014 and 2016 (8 sites). We used logistic regression to compare adverse birth outcomes by HIV and syphilis status. Outcomes included stillbirth, preterm delivery, low birth weight, and in-hospital neonatal death. RESULTS: Of 76,466 women, 75,770 (99.1%) had HIV test results, and 20,520 (27.1%) we

Whole-Exome Sequencing Reveals Uncaptured Variation and Distinct Ancestry in the Southern African Population of Botswana.

Large-scale, population-based genomic studies have provided a context for modern medical genetics. Among such studies, however, African populations have remained relatively underrepresented. The breadth of genetic diversity across the African continent argues for an exploration of local genomic context to facilitate burgeoning disease mapping studies in Africa. We sought to characterize genetic variation and to assess population substructure within a cohort of HIV-positive children from Botswana-a Southern African country that is regionally underrepresented in genomic databases. Using whole-ex

PEPFAR support of alcohol-HIV prevention activities in Namibia and Botswana: a framework for investigation, implementation and evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The association between harmful use of alcohol and HIV infection is well documented. To address this dual epidemic, the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) developed and implemented a multi-pronged approach primarily in Namibia and Botswana. We present the approach and preliminary results of the public health investigative and programmatic activities designed, initiated and supported by PEPFAR to combat the harmful use of alcohol and its association as a driver of HIV morbidity and mortality from 2008 to 2013. APPROACH: PEPFAR supported comprehensive alcohol pro

Early antiretroviral therapy is protective against epilepsy in children with human immunodeficiency virus infection in botswana.

BACKGROUND: Seizures are common among patients with HIV/AIDS in the developing world and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Early treatment with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) may reduce this risk by decreasing rates of central nervous system infections and HIV encephalopathy. METHODS: A case-control study of new-onset epilepsy among children aged 0-18 years with perinatally acquired HIV/AIDS followed in Gaborone, Botswana, during the period 2003-2009 was conducted. Children with epilepsy were identified and compared with age- and sex-matched controls without

Leptospira interrogans at the human-wildlife interface in northern Botswana: a newly identified public health threat.

Leptospirosis is the most widespread zoonosis in the world. In northern Botswana, humans live in close proximity to a diversity of wildlife and peridomestic rodents and may be exposed to a variety of zoonotic pathogens. Little is known regarding the occurrence and epidemiology of L. interrogans in Africa despite the recognized global importance of this zoonotic disease and the threat it poses to public health. In Botswana, banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) live in close proximity to humans across protected and unprotected landscapes and may be a useful sentinel species for assessing the occurren

Integration of control of schistosomiasis due to S. mansoni within primary health care in Ngamiland, Botswana.

A schistosomiasis control programme integrated into the existing primary health care infrastructure was initiated in Ngamiland, Botswana in 1985 after it was reported that the prevalence of S. mansoni infection among school children in the main town was over 80%. The programme is oriented by a plan of action developed by a national schistosomiasis task force. The target population of the district of Ngamiland is about 75,000 with a population density of less than 1 person per square km. The objectives of reduction of prevalence by 75% and reduction of infections with greater than 100 eggs per

Associations between school backpack loading, sitting time and low back pain among schoolchildren in Gaborone, Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is increasingly reported among school-aged children, a population vulnerable to musculoskeletal strain as a result of growth-related changes, developing spinal structures and school demands such as heavy backpacks and prolonged sitting. Although international evidence highlights these risk factors, data from African contexts, particularly Botswana, remain limited. AIM: This study investigated associations between school backpack loading, sitting time and the prevalence and intensity of LBP among 10-12-year-old schoolchildren. SETTING: Primary schools in Gaboro

Individual-level HPV vaccination verification in Botswana: lessons learned from implementation of the HOPE II trial.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 660,000 new cervical cancer cases and 350,000 deaths globally in 2022, with over 90% occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Global elimination targets call for vaccination of >90% of girls against human papillomavirus (HPV) by age 15 by 2030. While Botswana's national policy aligns with these targets, progress monitoring is constrained by fragmented, predominantly paper-based health information systems. We describe our experience verifying individual-level HPV vaccination status among adolescent girls and young women living with HIV
