Germ cell tumors in the mediastinum are rare and often occur in young patients but may occur in older patients. Seminoma, embryonal carcinoma, yolk sac tumor, choriocarcinoma and teratoma have distinct morphologic features with high grade nuclei. They are the primary diagnostic consideration in young males but may be lower on the list in older patients, where they may be misdiagnosed as carcinomas. Review of the history, use of immunohistochemistry stains and recognition of morphologic features will help to make the diagnosis of germ cell tumor of the mediastinum. These tumors have a good to i

A 15 year old boy presented with diminution in vision of both eyes, diabetes insipidus and hypopituitarism. MRI was suggestive of a large suprasellar and retrosellar craniopharyngioma with stretching of the optic chiasma. Histopathological findings on the first surgical specimen were interpreted as a craniopharyngioma. He was reoperated on account of clinical deterioration and increase in tumour size. Histological examination this time revealed derivatives of all three germ cell lineages along with areas of embryonal carcinoma, and yolk sac tumour besides squamous cysts, establishing the diagn

Rare paediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumours comprise a biologically-heterogeneous group of low-incidence diseases that present significant challenges to both therapeutic development and clinical research, limiting the availability of high-quality evidence to guide clinical care. The UK3CR Children's Cancer Research Group (CRG) CNS Tumours Subgroup convened a multidisciplinary workshop to identify research priorities and establish a strategic framework for advancing clinical trials in this setting. Four high-priority tumour groups-craniopharyngioma, choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC), very

A 41-year-old man presented to his primary care physician with a 1-month history of left neck adenopathy in the context of a history of nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCTs). In 2011, the patient was treated for stage IB (T2N0M0S0) right-sided NSGCTs of the testis, which were 95% embryonal and 5% yolk sac tumors. He underwent a right radical orchiectomy and was followed until 2022 without recurrence. In the work-up for his adenopathy, laboratory results for human chorionic gonadotropin, lactate dehydrogenase, and α-fetoprotein were normal. CT scans confirmed clustered enlarged lymph nodes

Migration of the embryonic thymus is thought to be the basis for the formation of ectopic thymic tumors. Thymic ectopy may be a result of the abnormal migration of the third or fourth branchial cleft to the anterior mediastinum during weeks 5-6 of embryonic development. However, ectopic thymic carcinoma has highly nonspecific histologic features and occurs in variable and unpredictable locations making it difficult to diagnose. However, the clinical diagnosis and treatment should not overlook the possibility of ectopic thymic tumors. Here, we report a case of ectopic thymic carcinoma diagnosed

Circulating carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and alpha fetoprotein (AFP) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in 53 patients with carcinoma of the ovary, 16 patients with other malignant genital tumors, and 31 women with nonmalignant diseases of the genital tract. The serum CEA concentration was elevated (greater than 5 ng/ml) in 11 patients with ovarian cancer, 2 patients with endometrial cancer, 1 patient with carcinoma of the cervix, and 1 patient with a benign embryonal cystic teratoma. Elevated CEA levels were found only in patients with advanced malignant disease, while early stages we

Testicular cancer is among the most common solid tumors in young men. Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) metastasis of testicular cancer has been rarely reported. In addition, metastasis occurs most commonly through retroperitoneal lymph nodes. Manifestations like abdominal pain and obstruction can be present if metastasis to GIT was considered. We report here a case of a 34-year-old male who was admitted to our GIT unit complaining of episodic epigastric pain. Computed Tomogram (CT) scan demonstrated a soft tissue like lesion involving the lumen of duodenum. Moreover, the patient had a right radica

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric primary liver tumours are the third largest group of solid abdominal neoplasms in children next to neuroblastoma and Wilms tumour, accounting for about 0.5% to 2% of all paediatric neoplasms, in which hepatoblastoma is the most common.
AIM: The present study was done to estimate the incidence of paediatric liver tumours over a period of five years and also, to study the clinical behaviour, alpha-fetoprotein correlation and histopathological features of paediatric liver tumours.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The details of patients treated for paediatric liver tumours for a

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Surveillance after orchiectomy alone has gained great popularity in the management of stage I NSGCTT. Preliminary results were enthusiastic, but critical voices have been raised against general use of this option as routine management. In an effort to identify patients at high risk of relapse, there has been a search for adverse prognostic factors of stage I nonseminomatous germ cell testicular tumors (NSGCTT). The aim of the study was to identify those patients in whom a surveillance policy is less likely to be successful.
METHODS: Eighty patients with stage I NSGCTT wer

Mediastinal germ-cell tumors (GCTs) usually occur within the anterior mediastinum, accounting for about 15% of all mediastinal cysts and tumors. They are associated with the thymus, presumably arising from extragonadal germ cells or thymic cells with germ-cell potential. Mediastinal seminoma develops primarily in young males with rare cases reported in females; likewise, embryonal carcinoma, endodermal sinus tumor or yolk-sac tumor, choriocarcinoma, and malignant mixed or combined GCTs also overwhelmingly affect males. Mature cystic teratoma affects males and females equally. The prognosis for

Rare malignant liver tumors (RMLTs) comprise a diverse group of neoplasms with distinct imaging features and significant diagnostic challenges due to their low prevalence and overlap with more common hepatic lesions. This review highlights the main radiologic characteristics of selected rare malignant liver tumors-including fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatic lymphoma, hepatocellular carcinoma in non-cirrhotic liver, mucinous cystic neoplasm, intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, angiosarcoma, malignant hepatic adenoma, neuroendocrine tu

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a powerful tool in the evaluation of primary liver neoplasms. Determination of tumor extent and tissue characterization is provided with standard spin-echo T1- and T2-weighted imaging and is enhanced by the application of advanced sequences such as gradient-echo, fast spin-echo, and fat suppression techniques. Intravenously administered contrast agents, such as gadopentetate dimeglumine and superparamagnetic iron oxide, provide additional opportunities for lesion characterization. Knowledge of the underlying gross and microscopic pathologic features of primar

We report the chromosomal characteristics of a recurrent pineal non-seminomatous germ cell tumor in a 16-year-old male patient. This non-seminomatous tumor had the following components: embryonal carcinoma, teratoma, yolk sac tumor, and trophoblastic giant cells. Chromosome analysis showed a near-triploid karyotype (64 chromosomes), including two copies of an isochromosome 12p. This latter finding could be confirmed using 12p-specific competitive in situ hybridization techniques applied to cultured cells (T2219-P6 cell line) derived from the tumor. The present findings are in keeping with the

A 28-year-old man visited our hospital with a complaint of left testicular pain and swelling. Left orchiectomy was performed, and its pathological finding was embryonal carcinoma (seminoma in a small portion). Though no sign of metastasis was detected and the serum tumor markers, alpha-fetoprotein, and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) decreased in value as expected, he has undergone two courses of chemotherapy (PVB regimen). Twenty months after operation the patient found contralateral testicular induration, and serum beta-HCG was abnormally high, 36.0 ng/ml. We performed right orchiect

High-frequency real-time sonography has enhanced accuracy in the diagnosis of scrotal abnormalities. Results of 48 scrotal scans of 92 testes are presented. There were 22 testicular lesions, nine seminomas, four embryonal cell carcinomas, one case of metastatic prostatic carcinoma, one benign "keratin cyst," three testicular infarcts, three atrophied testes, and one case of testicular torsion. Hypoechoic tumors and infarcts have a similar appearance. Extratesticular abnormalities included spermatoceles, varicoceles, epididymitis, hydroceles, and a scrotal hematoma. Sonography accurately distin

A case of embryonal carcinoma in the pineal region of a 17-year-old boy is presented. The tumor included elements of choriocarcinoma and endodermal sinus tumor, and the use of human chorionic gonadotropin and alpha-fetoprotein as tumor markers is discussed. The markers were demonstrated both within the tumor and in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood. The patient was treated with a postoperative program of irradiation and cancer chemotherapy, and at follow-up examination 20 months after operation no signs of residual tumor were present. It is suggested that human chorionic gonadotropin and

14-3-3 sigma is an exclusive epithelial marker and data on its expression in different malignancies are very scarce. The aims of the present study are to screen its expression in the most common neoplasms occurring in the urological and gynecological tract and to evaluate its use as a diagnostic marker. A tissue microarray was constructed using 350 samples from 13 different neoplasms. Immunohistochemical analysis using a polyclonal 14-3-3 sigma antibody was performed. Overall, this protein was positive in 141 and negative in 209 tumors. The most frequent expression was seen in squamous cell ca

Testicular germ cell tumors are the most common form of cancer in young adult males. They result from a derangement of primordial germ cells, and they grow out from a noninvasive carcinoma-in-situ precursor. Since carcinoma in situ can readily be cured by low-dose irradiation, there is a great incentive for non- or minimally invasive methods for detection of carcinoma in situ. We have recently shown that human Tera-2 embryonal carcinoma cells, obtained from a nonseminomatous testicular germ cell tumor, show alternative splicing and alternative promoter use of the platelet-derived growth factor
