Maternal mortality remains a major public health problem in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This case-control study, conducted in four health zones of the province of Maniema, aimed to identify the independent determinants of maternal death. A total of 197 maternal death cases were matched with 394 controls (surviving women). Multivariate analysis showed that lack of attendance at antenatal care visits, non-use of the partograph, receiving antenatal consultations in community health centers, as well as delivery in these facilities, were significant risk factors for maternal mortality. BACKGROUND: Hydrocephalus continues to pose significant clinical challenges in neurosurgery. The primary goal of this study is to assess the feasibility of ventriculocisternostomy (VCS) within the provincial city of Kinshasa and Mali to optimize the management of patients afflicted with hydrocephalus.
METHODS: This investigation was hosted at two major urban healthcare facilities: the Initiative Plus Hospital Center, positioned in the bustling metropolis of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and the Bamako Hospital, Republic of Mali. A prospective, analytical cohort study was e

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is the most widespread tick-born zoonotic bunyavirus that causes severe hemorrhagic fever and death in humans. CCHFV enters the cell via clathrin-mediated endocytosis which is dependent on its surface glycoproteins. However, the cellular receptors that are required for CCHFV entry are unknown. Here we show that the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) is an entry receptor for CCHFV. Genetic knockout of LDLR impairs viral infection in various CCHFV-susceptible human, monkey and mouse cells, which is restored upon reconstitution with ectopically-e

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a lethal viral disease that has severe public health effects throughout Africa and a case fatality rate of 10%-40%. CCHF virus was first discovered in Crimea in 1944 and has since caused a substantial disease burden in Africa. The shortage of diagnostic tools, ineffective tick control efforts, slow adoption of preventive measures, and cultural hurdles to public education are among the problems associated with continued CCHF virus transmission. Progress in preventing virus spread is also hampered by the dearth of effective serodiagnostic testing for ani

BACKGROUND: The Banalia health zone in the Democratic Republic of Congo reported a meningitis epidemic in 2021 that evolved outside the epidemic season. We assessed the effects of the meningitis epidemic response.
METHODS: The standard case definition was used to identify cases. Care was provided to 2651 in-patients, with 8% of them laboratory tested, and reactive vaccination was conducted. To assess the effects of reactive vaccination and treatment with ceftriaxone, a statistical analysis was performed.
RESULTS: Overall, 2662 suspected cases of meningitis with 205 deaths were reported. The

OBJECTIVES: Partial artemisinin resistance, mediated by Plasmodium falciparum K13 (PfK13) mutations, has been confirmed in certain areas of East Africa that are historically associated with high-level antimalarial resistance. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) borders these areas in the East. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of resistance markers in six National Malaria Control Program surveillance sites; Boende, Kabondo, Kapolowe, Kimpese, Mikalayi, and Rutshuru.
METHODS: The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in P. falciparum genes PfK13, Pfdhfr, Pfdhps, Pfmdr1, and Pfcr

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an emerging tick-borne viral zoonotic disease of public health importance. Cattle and buffaloes although not showing any clinical symptoms, can be infected by the CCHF virus and act as sources of infection to human beings. The prevalence of CCHF in cattle and buffaloes is important from One health perspective for control of CCHF in humans.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken to ascertain the prevalence of CCHFV in cattle and buffaloes of India.

Cholera outbreaks contribute substantially to illness and death in low- and middle-income countries. Cholera outbreaks are associated with several social and environmental risk factors, and extreme conditions can act as catalysts. A social extreme known to be associated with infectious disease outbreaks is conflict, causing disruption to services, loss of income, and displacement. To determine the extent of this association, we used the self-controlled case-series method and found that conflict increased the risk for cholera in Nigeria by 3.6 times and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo b

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale is an understudied malaria species prevalent throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. Little is known about the distribution of ovale malaria and risk factors for infection in areas of high malaria endemicity.
METHODS: Using the 2013 Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Demographic and Health Survey, we conducted a risk factor analysis for P. ovale infections. We evaluated geographic clustering of infections and speciated to P. ovale curtisi and P. ovale wallikeri through deep sequencing.
RESULTS: Of 18 149 adults tested, we detected 143 prevalent P. ovale infect

BACKGROUND: Rubella vaccine has yet to be introduced into the national immunization schedule of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC); the current burden of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) is unknown and likely to be high. An important consideration prior to introducing rubella containing vaccine (RCV) is the potential inverse relationship between RCV coverage and CRS incidence. Increasing RCV coverage will also increase in the average age of infection. Cumulative infections across all age groups will decrease, but the number of infections in age groups vulnerable to CRS may increase.

BACKGROUND: Fever with jaundice is a common symptom of some infectious diseases. In public health surveillance within the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), yellow fever is the only recognized cause of fever with jaundice. However, only 5% of the surveillance cases are positive for yellow fever and thus indicate the involvement of other pathogens. Leptospira spp. are the causative agents of leptospirosis, a widespread bacterial zoonosis, a known cause of fever with jaundice. This study aimed to determine the seropositivity of anti-Leptospira antibodies among suspected yellow fever cases a

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a worldwide tick-borne viral infection in humans. The aim of the study is to report a case of a female patient with severe CCHF with the bacteremia of Clostridium perfringens. An 18-year-old woman admitted to the emergency department with sudden onset of fever, nausea and vomiting, myalgia, headache, generalized abdominal pain. It was learned that the patient was living in a rural area and had a history of tick bite 3 days before the admission. At laboratory examination, bicytopenia, abnormal liver function tests, and abnormal coagulation parameters we

BACKGROUND: In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the penal code prohibits the provision of abortion. In practice, however, it is widely accepted that the procedure can be performed to save the life of a pregnant woman. Although abortion is highly restricted, anecdotal evidence indicates that women often resort to clandestine abortions, many of which are unsafe. However, to date, there are no official statistics or reliable data to support this assertion.
OBJECTIVES: Our study provides the first estimates of the incidence of abortion and unintended pregnancy in Kinshasa.
METHODS: We applied t

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is one of the major public health problems mostly affecting developing countries in Africa and Asia where 99.9% of all rabies related human deaths are recorded each year. In Democratic Republic of Congo, repeated outbreaks have been reported. Despite this, there is little reliable epidemiological data about rabies in the country for the development of effective control strategies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out in Kinshasa Province during a period of five years (2009-2013) to describe the proportion of rabid animals and the species involved i

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced the most outbreaks of Ebola virus disease since the virus' discovery in 1976. This article provides for the first time a description and a line list for all outbreaks in this country, comprising 996 cases. Compared to patients over 15 years old, the odds of dying were significantly lower in patients aged 5 to 15 and higher in children under five (with 100% mortality in those under 2 years old). The odds of dying increased by 11% per day that a patient was not hospitalised. Outbreaks with an initially high reproduction number, R (>3), were ra
