[A 24 month evaluation of zinc oxide pulpotomy on primary canines].

Pulpotomy is the most performed and controversial therapeutic in pediatric dentistry. Since formocresol is known to have a toxic effect on living tissues, plus a mutagenic and carcinogenic potential with a systemic uptake of formocresol via pulpotomized teeth, other alternative products have been investigated. Twenty-five decayed primary canines and twenty-five healthy primary canines necessitating disking for orthodontic purposes were pulpotomized using non modified Zinc Oxide Eugenol. The effects of this material were evaluated both clinically and radiographically. Post operative control exa

The use of epsilon-aminocaproic acid for the management of hemophilia in dental and oral surgery patients.

The use of epsilon-aminocaproic acid has proved to be an efficient and practical method for treating hemophiliacs who require dental work. In the past, patients requiring extractions were admitted to a hospital for approximately ten days and received replacement infusions every 12 hours during their stay. This resulted in a large expense because of the cost of the material and the hospitalization itself, not to mention the trauma sustained by the patient both physically and psychologically. Also, by decreasing the number of factor infusions, the risk of complications such as the transmission o

Obliteration of the frontal sinus cavity with bioactive glass.

BACKGROUND: Bioactive glass (BG) is a glass ceramic material. It has been used as surgical bone replacement material in ear and oral surgery, orthopedics, and dentistry. METHODS: Bioactive glass was used as obliteration material in a series of osteoplastic frontal sinus operations on 10 patients suffering from chronic frontal sinusitis, which other, more-conservative treatment modalities had failed to cure. RESULTS: Bioactive glass is easy to handle, and complete obliteration of all sinusal recesses and excavations is easily achieved. No adverse effects of the implant material have been seen

Effect of 3D superimposition software on intraoral scanner accuracy and monitoring outcome.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether 3D superimposition software ("Apps") systematically affects 3D deviation outcomes derived from intraoral scanner (IOS) data, using two quantile‑range accuracy metrics (Q90_Q10_half and Q95_Q05_half). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two jaw‑sized reference models were digitized with a high‑resolution optical scanner (ATOS III) to generate reference STL meshes (REF_STL). Five IOS devices acquired ten scans per device and per jaw model, exported as STL meshes (IMP_STL): Emerald Green, iTero 5D, Medit i900, Primescan, and Trios 5. Each IMP_STL was trimmed (1 mm above gingi

The forgotten organ: Why the oral microbiome belongs in every physician's toolkit.

The oral cavity is the most densely colonised microbial niche in the human body after the gut - over 700 species and an estimated two billion bacteria (Deo and Deshmukh, 2019) - yet it remains conspicuously absent from the systemic health conversation. Mounting evidence links oral microbial dysbiosis to more than 50 systemic conditions (Peng et al, 2022), including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes (Preshaw et al, 2026), adverse pregnancy outcomes, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's. Despite this, dentistry and medicine continue to operate as parallel systems, with oral health excluded

Dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery in the patient with liver disease: key messages for clinical practice.

The recent changes in terms of both epidemiology of chronic liver disease (CLD) and long-term survival of patients with CLD have had a great impact in the field of dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery. In this context, compared with the previous decades, today it is more probable to cure patients with CLD also at advanced stage (cirrhosis), that could remain asymptomatic for long, before the appearance of signs of decompensation. Hence, it is crucial to identify the patient with CLD and to define the stage of the latter. The main risks are the viral acquisition on the part of the opera

Magnetoelectric-powered electrocatalysis for rapid wireless tooth whitening.

Aesthetic dentistry acts as a crucial symbol of oral health, and its development relies on advances in tooth-whitening strategies. Traditional peroxide-based whitening agents are restricted by inconvenient clinical operation and potential damage to the surface enamel and surrounding soft tissues. Novel non-destructive methods based on photo-, piezo- and pyro-catalysis present advantages in terms of usage and biosafety. However, their applications are still challenged by their whitening efficiency and time consumption. Targeted at these drawbacks, our study presents an innovative wireless and c

Trends in the placement of posterior composites in dental schools.

The aim of this paper is to review trends in the teaching of posterior composites in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom over the last fifteen years. The authors compared the results of surveys of the teaching of posterior composites performed in 1989, 1997, and 2004-05. Historical and contemporary international trends were investigated. The amount of clinical and didactic teaching of posterior composites has increased over the past fifteen years. From a time over fifteen years ago, when very few dental students placed posterior composites in dental school, approximately

Forced eruption in impacted teeth: analysis of failed cases and outcome of re-operation.

BACKGROUND: Forced eruption of an impacted tooth usually requires surgical and orthodontic interventions to successfully bring the tooth into the dental arch. The clinical time required for a forced eruption is difficult to predict before treatment begins and success rates are affected by several factors before and after an eruption. This study was conducted to identify factors that affect the success of forced eruption, the duration of orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth, and the reasons for re-operation and forced eruption failure in a various teeth and cases. METHODS: In this retrospec

The influence of patients' decisions on treatment planning in restorative dentistry.

UNLABELLED: As part of treatment planning, options are presented to patients by dentists. An informal discussion takes place involving a cost-benefit analysis and a treatment plan is agreed. Evidence-based dentistry takes into account the best available literature, clinical experience and patient factors to guide the dentist. Dentists exert considerable influence on which treatment modality is selected. This paper focuses on the importance of patient factors which lead to less than ideal, clinically acceptable, treatment plans that nevertheless give patient satisfaction over the long term. Tho

The relationship between body system-based chronic conditions and dental utilization for Medicaid-enrolled children: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dental care is the most common unmet health care need for children with chronic conditions. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that not all children with chronic conditions encounter difficulties accessing dental care. The goals of this study are to evaluate dental care use for Medicaid-enrolled children with chronic conditions and to identify the subgroups of children with chronic conditions that are the least likely to use dental care services. METHODS: This study focused on children with chronic conditions ages 3-14 enrolled in the Iowa Medicaid Program in 2005 and 2006. The
