Facemask Alternatives in Veterinary Medicine in the Context of COVID-19 Shortages.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a widespread shortage of facemasks and other personal protective equipment in veterinary medicine without clear, research-based guidance on alternatives to FDA-certified disposable surgical masks. In the absence of detailed veterinary research, an in-depth review of the human medical literature was conducted to evaluate the viability of reusable, sterilizable cloth, medical textile, or other material alternatives that may be quickly manufactured and used by veterinarians. The results at the time of publication support the AVMA, CDC, and WHO recommendations to e

Estimating Hidden Cholera Burden and Intervention Effectiveness.

Cholera remains a significant public health threat in many parts of the world, with differing levels of compliance to intervention strategies and undocumented cases contributing to reservoir contamination with Vibrio cholerae at varying rates alongside reported cases. To address this, we incorporate an inapparent cholera-infected compartment into the iSIR model and equip it with parameters depicting vaccination and compliance levels for water and food sanitation, handwashing, and safe fecal disposal. Our model shows that the bacteria shedding from the inapparent infection can significantly aff

[Hyperbaric oxygen for the treatment of necrotizing fasciitis].

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe often life threatening bacterial infection. There are 2 main reasons to use hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2): the polymorphism of the bacterial flora with a predominance of anaerobes, either strict or aerotolerant; and the tissular necrosis due to an extensive disseminated microvascular obstruction within the infected area. Association of HBO2 to antibiotics and surgery is based on strong pathophysiological findings as well as on evidences from animal studies. Clinical evidence in human is still lacking even if published data supports its use in severe cases. Con

Evaluation of perioperative outcomes associated with the flexible ureterorenoscopy with flexible and navigable suction ureteral access sheath and reused disposable scopes: a prospective multicentre study by the European Association of Urology and European Association of Urology Section of Endourology.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing adoption of single-use ureteroscopes in retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), concerns regarding cost and environmental sustainability have prompted interest in their reuse, giving rise to the concept of reused disposable scopes (RDS). This study evaluates the impact of RDS on perioperative outcomes in RIRS when used in conjunction with novel technologies such as the flexible and navigable suction access sheath (FANS). METHODS: This prospective multicenter study included 607 adult patients undergoing RIRS with RDS across 12 international centers between July 20

A system for invitro inhaled/exhaled aerosol testing of personal protective equipment.

Social distancing at six feet (about two meters), frequent hand hygiene, and using personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and shields are common practices to reduce the transmission of airborne viruses. An in-vitro system for testing and comparing a selection of PPE to prevent aerosol escape and aerosol intrusion at three distances and three angles is described. In the system tested, at six feet, face masks or shields provided markedly decreased aerosol transmission in a room with limited ventilation. At two feet, with a type of protection wearing manikin emitting aerosols of normal

Incremental costs of introducing jet injection technology for delivery of routine childhood vaccinations: comparative analysis from Brazil, India, and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Disposable-syringe jet injectors (DSJIs) have the potential to deliver vaccines safely and affordably to millions of children around the world. We estimated the incremental costs of transitioning from needles and syringes to delivering childhood vaccines with DSJIs in Brazil, India, and South Africa. METHODS: Two scenarios were assessed: (1) DSJI delivery of all vaccines at current dose and depth; (2) a change to intradermal (ID) delivery with DSJIs for hepatitis B and yellow fever vaccines, while the other vaccines are delivered by DSJIs at current dose and depth. Clinical evaluation of the Terumo Capiox FX05 hollow fiber oxygenator with integrated arterial line filter.

Perfusion techniques and equipment in pediatric open heart surgery have continued to focus on decreasing prime volumes and lowering surface areas of the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit. While this has improved drastically over the last 20 years, greater demand is being placed on the perfusionist to reduce the deleterious effects of bypass without compromising safety or efficiency. Specifically, manufacturers of disposable perfusion equipment have focused on providing pediatric perfusionists with oxygenators that provide the smallest prime and surface area possible while attempting to maximize p

Inhaled salbutamol delivery in small children with disposable and reusable spacers: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Research on spacers for paediatric breathing patterns is limited, especially for disposable types, which may be a practical alternative to reusable valved holding chambers (VHC) in certain clinical settings. METHODS: In vitro, the fine particle dose (FPD) of salbutamol from a pressurised metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) was tested using two paperboard spacers-DispozABLE (Diz) and LiteAire (LA)-and three reusable VHCs: AeroChamber Plus Flow-Vu (AC), EasyChamber (EC) and OptiChamber Diamond (OC). The pMDI+VHC setup was connected to a child throat model without a facemask. Salbutamol avai

Initial experience with duodenoscopes with single-use end caps in pediatric ERCP: infection prevention comes at a cost.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Duodenoscopes with single-use end caps were introduced to minimize infection risk, but they are unstudied in pediatrics. METHODS: We collected clinical data and endoscopists' evaluations of duodenoscopes with single-use end caps versus reusable duodenoscopes over 18 months. RESULTS: A total of 106 ERCPs were performed for patients aged 1 to 18 (mean, 14.2) years. Forty-six involved single-use end caps, with 9 requiring crossover to reusable duodenoscopes. ERCPs involving single-use end caps resulted in more instances of mucosal trauma (10 vs 0; P < .05) and post-ERCP pan

Simple and rapid fabrication of disposable carbon-based electrochemical cells using an electronic craft cutter for sensor and biosensor applications.

This work describes the construction of an all-plastic disposable carbon-based electrochemical cell (DCell) using a simple procedure based on the use of a home cutter printer for prototyping and laminating. The cutter printer and adhesive vinyl films were used to produce three electrodes in an electrochemical cell layout, and a laminating process was then used to define the geometric area and insulate the electrodes. The DCell showed excellent performance in several applications including the determination of toxic metals in water samples, the immobilization of DNA and the detection of Salmone

Generation, types and impacts of biomedical waste during COVID-19: Indian context.

India's already-stressed waste disposal system has been strained by the COVID-19 outbreak. The challenge of managing biomedical Waste (BMW) in India has become more complicated in recent years, mainly due to the sudden emergence of COVID-19. As a methodology, a literature review was carried out with the help of Google Scholar, Research Gate, PubMed, and academic journal databases. Additionally, publications from numerous non-academic sources (such as news websites etc.) and current guidelines, such as those from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, were also accessed

Reuse of single use medical devices.

During the ten years that I have worked at the Canadian Nurses Protective Society, we have had numerous calls from Operating Room nurses questioning the practice of re-using single use medical devices in their facilities and voicing their concerns about possible harm to patients, themselves and potential liability exposure. Interest in this topic has been rekindled by the recent Saskatchewan case involving the death of a patient from variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (vCJD) and possible transmission of vCJD to 71 patients who may have been exposed to the same endoscope as the deceased while in

[Steps for reducing the carbon footprint of the operating room].

The healthcare sector contributes significantly to global warming due to carbon emissions; this sector is, therefore, partially responsible for the negative effects of climate change on public health. Carbon emissions by the healthcare sector amount to 7% of the total carbon footprint of the Netherlands. It is anticipated that measures to reduce carbon emissions in the operating room (OR) can make an important contribution to reducing carbonemissions in the hospital as a whole. The most important elements contributing to the carbon footprint of the OR are: energy consumption for heating, venti

Infection with hepatitis A, B, delta, and human immunodeficiency viruses in children receiving cycled cancer chemotherapy.

Serological markers of hepatitis A, B, and Delta and human immunodeficiency viruses were studied in 25 children receiving cancer chemotherapy. Eighty-eight percent had pre-existing HAV immunity which was unaltered by chemotherapy. HDV infection was observed in 8% while HIV was conspicuous by its absence. Active HBV infection, observed in 76% of the children, was asymptomatic in the majority and was accompanied by a high incidence of HBe antigenaemia (57.9%) and its persistence. Pre-existing anti-HBs failed to prevent HBV infection recurrence, which was, however, transient and self-limiting. Mu

Prospective Randomized Trial of Single-Use vs Reusable Cystoscope for Ureteral Stent Removal.

Background: Reusable cystoscopes are associated with risks of cross-contamination, need for chemical reprocessing, mechanical breakdown, maintenance costs, and labor for cleaning. A sterile, single-use cystoscope may reduce or eliminate the source of these infections while also decreasing exposure to reprocessing chemical agents. In this multicenter, randomized trial, we sought to compare single use with reusable endoscopes for ureteral stent removal. Methods: A three-center, randomized, dual-arm postmarket clinical trial was performed to compare the single-use cystoscope (Ambu A/S) with stand
