Changes in the clustering of health-related behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic: examining predictors using latent transition analysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on daily life, affecting both physical and mental health. Changes arising from the pandemic may longitudinally impact health-related behaviors (HRB). As different HRBs co-occur, in this study, we explore how six HRBs - alcohol (past-week and binge-drinking), tobacco, marijuana, benzodiazepine use, and unhealthy food consumption - were grouped and changed over time during the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample of 1038 university students and staff (18 to 73 years old) of two universities completed an online psychometrically adequate survey regarding t

Invited review: The influence of immune activation on transition cow health and performance-A critical evaluation of traditional dogmas.

The progression from gestation into lactation represents the transition period, and it is accompanied by marked physiological, metabolic, and inflammatory adjustments. The entire lactation and a cow's opportunity to have an additional lactation are heavily dependent on how successfully she adapts during the periparturient period. Additionally, a disproportionate amount of health care and culling occurs early following parturition. Thus, lactation maladaptation has been a heavily researched area of dairy science for more than 50 yr. It was traditionally thought that excessive adipose tissue mob

Transition dairy cow health is associated with first postpartum ovulation risk, metabolic status, milk production, rumination, and physical activity.

Our objective was to determine the association of health status during the first 60 d in milk (DIM) and first postpartum ovulation risk, physical activities recorded by an activity monitor, and metabolic and milk measures in Holstein cows. Late-gestation heifers and close-up dry cows in 1 herd fitted with CowManager SensOors (Agis, Harmelen, the Netherlands) were enrolled in the study 3 wk before expected parturition to assess ear skin temperature and daily rumination, eating, inactivity, and activity times. Blood samples were collected at calving (d 0), and on d 3, 7, and 14 to assess concent

Targeted Proteomics Guided by Label-free Quantitative Proteome Analysis in Saliva Reveal Transition Signatures from Health to Periodontal Disease.

Periodontal diseases are among the most prevalent worldwide, but largely silent, chronic diseases. They affect the tooth-supporting tissues with multiple ramifications on life quality. Their early diagnosis is still challenging, due to lack of appropriate molecular diagnostic methods. Saliva offers a non-invasively collectable reservoir of clinically relevant biomarkers, which, if utilized efficiently, could facilitate early diagnosis and monitoring of ongoing disease. Despite several novel protein markers being recently enlisted by discovery proteomics, their routine diagnostic application is

Overcoming Barriers to Health Care during Reentry with the North Carolina Formerly Incarcerated Transition (NC FIT) Program: Patient Perspectives.

Transitions Clinic Network (TCN) programs facilitate continuity of care for people with chronic conditions recently released from incarceration. Despite widespread implementation of TCN programs and their association with positive reentry outcomes, studies have yet to examine clients' perspectives on the programs' most helpful traits for overcoming reentry barriers to health care. Therefore, we interviewed 19 clients from the TCN-affiliated North Carolina Formerly Incarcerated Transition (NC FIT) Program. Respondents' identified reentry barriers included financial challenges, difficulties with

Growing pains: adult subspecialist perspectives on improving transition from paediatric to adult care for youth with complex health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Transition from paediatric to adult healthcare is particularly challenging for youth and their caregivers with complex health conditions, in part due to loss of paediatric supports and fragmentation of care, contributing to adverse outcomes. To date, transition research and policy has been largely driven by paediatric providers. Adult provider insights are critical to inform gaps in care, transition planning and enable innovative and sustainable interventions. OBJECTIVE: To describe adult subspecialist perspectives on barriers, facilitators and opportunities to improve the transit

Hormonal Transition and Osseointegration: Evaluating the Nexus between Vitamin D Status and Peri-Implant Health and Disease in Women.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in bone metabolism and immune regulation, both of which are fundamental to peri-implant health and overall human wellbeing. Postmenopausal women are particularly susceptible to vitamin D deficiency due to hormonal alterations, a condition that may predispose them to peri-implant disease and compromise implant success. Addressing this deficiency through evidence-based medicine has important implications for maintaining oral health and mitigating broader public health concerns related to implant failure. AIM: To evaluate and compare the correlation bet

Abomasal Disorders in Dairy Cows During the Transition Period: Interconnected Risk Factors and Repercussions on Health and Culling Rate.

The transition period in dairy cows increases susceptibility to various diseases. Abomasal diseases, particularly abomasal displacement (AD) and abomasal ulcers (AU), are important causes of production losses, early culling, and compromised animal welfare. However, few contemporary reviews have comprehensively synthesized these conditions. This narrative review aims to critically synthesize the main risk factors, integrate the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, and present recent advances in diagnosis and treatment. Evidence indicates that AD and AU are disorders closely associated with

Food system change, traditional food practices, and nutrition transition dynamics: Qualitative insights from Indonesia and implications for cardiometabolic health.

Rapid urbanisation and food system change have reshaped diets across low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), contributing to a growing burden of cardiometabolic disease (CMD). However, food system change in LMIC is not uniform or linear, with traditional diets and food practices persisting alongside modernising food environments. Drawing on qualitative data from three urban communities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, this study examines how residents experience and navigate food system and dietary change amid rapid urbanisation. Participants described shifts consistent with the nutrition transition

Effect of body condition score loss during the transition period on metabolism, milk yield and health in Holstein cows.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the impact of perinatal body condition score (BCS) and its subsequent loss on postpartum performance and health outcomes in dairy cattle. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 156 cows were randomly selected, and blood samples were collected at -21, 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 50 days relative to calving. Milk yield and disease incidence in dairy cows were recorded after calving. These cows were subsequently categorised into three groups based on BCS loss during the transition period: a no-BCS-loss (maintained BCS) group (M, 0 < BCS loss ≤ 0.25), low-BCS-loss

Self-Reported Sleep Disturbances over the Menopausal Transition and Fracture Risk: The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation.

Sleep disturbances are common and may impact fracture risk directly by influencing bone turnover or indirectly through shared risk factors or mediators. To investigate the association between self-reported sleep disturbances across the menopausal transition (MT) and fractures, we prospectively studied 3101 women enrolled in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). At each of 14 study visits spaced approximately 18 months apart, a standardized validated scale ascertained trouble falling asleep, waking up several times during the night, and waking up earlier than planned. Two time-v

Formerly Incarcerated Community Health Workers Engaging Individuals Returning From Incarceration Into Primary Care: Results From the Transition Clinic Network.

Over half a million individuals return from United States prisons and millions more from jails every year, many of whom with complex health and social needs. Community health workers (CHWs) perform diverse roles to improve health outcomes in disadvantaged communities, but no studies have assessed their role as integrated members of a primary care team serving individuals returning from incarceration. Using data from participants who received primary care through the Transitions Clinic Network, a model of care that integrates CHWs with a lived experienced of incarceration into primary care team
