Distinct Nailfold Videocapillaroscopy Findings in Patients With Anti-Aminoacyl-tRNA Synthetase Antibodies.

We investigated nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) findings in antisynthetase syndrome (ASyS) and compared patterns among six anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (anti-ARS) antibody (Ab) subtypes. In this retrospective study of 66 Japanese patients positive for anti-Jo-1, EJ, PL-7, PL-12, KS, or OJ Abs, seven NVC abnormalities were assessed: enlarged capillaries, reduced capillaries, hemorrhages, capillary ramifications, disorganization of the vascular array, loss of capillaries, and giant capillaries. Enlarged capillaries, reduced capillaries, and hemorrhages were common overall; in contrast, pati

Could ultrasound and muscle elastography be associated with clinical assessment, laboratory and nailfold capillaroscopy in juvenile dermatomyositis patients?

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) is the most common idiopathic inflammatory myopathy in children. Imaging exams are useful for muscle assessment, with ultrasonography (US) being a promising tool in detecting disease activity and tissue damage. There are few studies about muscle elastography. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to associate clinical, laboratory, and nailfold capillaroscopy (NC) assessments with US in JDM patients; and to compare the findings of US and Strain Elastography (SE) from patients and healthy controls. METHODS: An analytic cross-sectional study was performed with JDM p

[Periungueal capillaroscopy: an easy and reliable method to evaluate all microcirculation diseases].

Periungueal capillaroscopy is a simple and reliable non-invasive technique allowing evaluation of cutaneous microcirculation. It was promoted for decades in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon in order to differentiate between the benign primary Raynaud's phenomenon and the secondary form in connective tissue diseases, especially systemic sclerosis. Nevertheless, the value of this procedure has also been shown in numerous pathologies such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. This literature review points to the versatility of this useful exam and its results in a large spectrum of diseases w

Videocapillaroscopic alterations in alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common hair disorder observed in dermatological practice; however, the exact mechanisms that lead to the hair loss are still unknown. Disturbances in the blood supply of hair follicles may be one of the elements in the complex pathogenesis of AA. Nailfold videocapillaroscopy is a noninvasive technique that allows analysis of skin microcirculation in vivo. The aim of the study was the videocapillaroscopic assessment of skin microcirculation in AA patients. The study included 44 patients with patchy alopecia areata, 27 with alopecia universalis or totalis, and 40 health
