Sleep and mood disorders in women with dry eye disease.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate sleep and mood disorders in women aged 30-69 with dry eye disease (DED). All subjects underwent corneal examinations, with 890 completing a questionnaire regarding symptoms of DED and 213 completing both the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaires. Subjects were then divided into three groups based on age (younger [30-45 years], perimenopausal [46-55 years], and older [56-69 years]), and comparisons were made among groups in subjects with and without DED. PSQI scores were significantl

Seeking insights about cycling mood disorders via anonymized search logs.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders affect a significant portion of the general population. Cycling mood disorders are characterized by intermittent episodes (or events) of the disease. OBJECTIVE: Using anonymized Web search logs, we identify a population of people with significant interest in mood stabilizing drugs (MSD) and seek evidence of mood swings in this population. METHODS: We extracted queries to the Microsoft Bing search engine made by 20,046 Web searchers over six months, separately explored searcher demographics using data from a large external panel of users, and sought supporting infor

Data mining approaches for genome-wide association of mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders are highly heritable forms of major mental illness. A major breakthrough in elucidating the genetic architecture of mood disorders was anticipated with the advent of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). However, to date few susceptibility loci have been conclusively identified. The genetic etiology of mood disorders appears to be quite complex, and as a result, alternative approaches for analyzing GWAS data are needed. Recently, a polygenic scoring approach that captures the effects of alleles across multiple loci was successfully applied to the analysis of GWAS d

Pharmacological prevention of suicide in patients with major mood disorders.

The risk of self-destructive behavior in mood disorders is an inherent phenomenon and suicidal behavior in patients with unipolar or bipolar major mood disorders strongly relates to the presence and severity of depressive episodes. Consequently, early recognition, and successful acute and long-term treatment of depressive disorders is essential for suicide prevention in such patients. Large-scale, retrospective and prospective naturalistic long-term clinical studies, including severely ill, frequently suicidal depressives show that appropriate pharmacotherapy markedly reduces suicide morbidity

Affective instability, family history of mood disorders, and neurodevelopmental disturbance.

The association between affective instability and both family history of mood disorders and signs of neurodevelopmental disturbance was examined in a sample of 303 adults. Affective instability was measured using the borderline personality disorder "affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood" diagnostic criterion as assessed dimensionally using the Personality Disorder Interview--IV. Participants were interviewed concerning family history of mood disorders, with family history coded using the Family History Research Diagnostic Criteria. Minor physical anomalies, inconsistent hand

Brain volumes in psychotic youth with schizophrenia and mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: We sought to test the hypothesis that deficits in grey matter volume are characteristic of psychotic youth with early-onset schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (EOSS) but not of psychotic youth with early-onset mood disorders (EOMD). METHODS: We used magnetic resonance imaging to examine brain volume in 24 psychotic youth (13 male, 11 female) with EOSS (n = 12) or EOMD (n = 12) and 17 healthy controls (10 male, 7 female). We measured the volume of grey and white matter using an automated segmentation program. RESULTS: After adjustment for age and intracranial volume, whole brain vol

Impact of glucocorticoids on brain function: relevance for mood disorders.

Exposure to stressful situations activates two hormonal systems that help the organism to adapt. On the one hand stress hormones achieve adaptation by affecting peripheral organs, on the other hand by altering brain function such that appropriate behavioral strategies are selected for optimal performance at the short term, while relevant information is stored for reference in the future. In this chapter we describe how cellular effects induced by stress hormones--in particular by glucocorticoids--may contribute to the behavioral outcome after a single stressor. In addition to situations of acu

The role of mood disorders in exercise-induced cardiovascular reactivity.

OBJECTIVE: Increased cardiovascular (CV) reactivity has been associated with worse CV prognosis. Though mood disorders (MDs) have been associated with increased CV reactivity during behavioral stressors, the extent to which MDs and their interaction with coronary heart disease (CHD) influences exercise-induced CV reactivity has not been evaluated. METHODS: Five hundred twenty-six patients underwent nuclear exercise stress testing. Cardiovascular parameters were assessed at rest, every 2 minutes during exercise, and at peak exercise. MDs were measured using a structured psychiatric interview,

Classifying mood disorders by age-at-onset instead of polarity.

BACKGROUND: Polarity is the pillar of the current categorical unipolar-bipolar division of mood disorders. However, genetic studies on these polarity-based phenotypes have been largely inconclusive. Recent clinical and epidemiological studies seem to support more of a continuum than a splitting of mood disorders. A reshaping of the classification of mood disorders thus seems required. Age-at-onset and recurrence have been suggested to be more clinically and genetically useful in the phenotyping of mood disorders. STUDY AIM: To test a classification of mood disorders based on age-at-onset, and

Risk factors associated with the development of postpartum mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Various factors have been reported to be associated with the development of postpartum mood disorders. The relationship between postpartum mood disorders and putatively hormone-related phenomena such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is unclear. This study attempts to determine whether such mood phenomena are risk factors for postpartum mood disorders. METHODS: Postpartum women (n=1800) were assessed for risk factors for postpartum mood disorders during the first 2-4 days after parturition. Of these, 133 were defined as "high risk" and 109 as "low risk" according to fixed

Diagnostic relevance of sleep complaints in anxiety and mood disorders.

Clinical assessments of sleep and subjective state upon waking were performed in normal controls and patients with generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, primary dysthymia and major depression. Subjects were selected according to DSM-III-R criteria. As compared to normal controls, patients with generalised anxiety, dysthymia and major depression exhibit pervasive and intense complaints of insomnia, and no clear distinctions can be drawn among these groups. Patients with panic disorder do not differ from normal controls, whereas obsessive compulsive patient

Food and mood: relationship between food, serotonin and affective disorders.

The relationship of food and eating with affective and other clinical disorders is complex and intriguing. Serotoninergic dysfunction in seasonal affective disorder, atypical depression, premenstrual syndrome, anorexia and bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder is reviewed. Patients exhibiting a relationship between food and behaviour are found in various diagnostic categories. This points to a need to shift from nosological to functional thinking in psychiatry. It also means application of psychopharmacological treatments across diagnostic boundaries. The use of phototherapy and psychotro

Bipolar mood disorders: an affected sibling study. II. Symptom correlations.

Part II of the affected sibling study raises questions of symptom correlation (incidence of delusions, states of confusion, suicide tendencies and attempts, hallucinatory episodes, hypochondriac attitudes, angry manias, and depressive stupor) in mood disorders. The investigated sample (307 sibling groups, 701 hospitalized patients; selection principle: at least 1 sibling showing a bipolar or manic axial syndrome) directs our attention to the possibility that the multiplicity of specific manic and depressive syndromes derives not only from the genetic complexity of the mood-producing system but

Mood disorders in stroke patients. Importance of location of lesion.

In a selected group of right-handed patients with single stroke lesions of either the right (n = 14) or left (n = 22) hemisphere and no predisposing factors for psychiatric disorder, we found that the severity of depression was significantly increased in patients with left anterior lesions as opposed to any other lesion location. In addition, the severity of depression correlated significantly with proximity of the lesion on CT scan to the frontal pole in the left anterior group. The right hemisphere lesion group showed the reverse trend: patients with right posterior lesions were more depress

The Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) task force recommendations for the management of patients with mood disorders and comorbid substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders, especially bipolar disorder (BD), frequently are associated with substance use disorders (SUDs). There are well-designed trials for the treatment of SUDs in the absence of a comorbid condition. However, one cannot generalize these study results to individuals with comorbid mood disorders, because therapeutic efficacy and/or safety and tolerability profiles may differ with the presence of the comorbid disorder. Therefore, a review of the available evidence is needed to provide guidance to clinicians facing the challenges of treating patients with comorbid mood disord

Responses to depressed mood and suicide attempt in young adults with a history of childhood-onset mood disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Although individuals' responses to their depressed mood are hypothesized to play an important role in the development and maintenance of depression, how these responses might impact the likelihood of suicidal behavior in mood disorders remains largely unexplored. The goal of the current study was to examine whether maladaptive responses to depressed mood are associated with suicide attempts in adults with a history of childhood-onset mood disorder (COMD). METHOD: Participants included 223 young adult probands with COMD meeting DSM-III or DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorde

Chronobiology of Mood Disorders: The Role of the Biological Clock in Depression and Bipolar Disorder.

Mood disorders, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and seasonal affective disorder, exhibit significant heterogeneity, with disturbances in biological rhythms playing a central role. These disturbances not only contribute to the onset and progression of mood disorders but also serve as important predictors of relapse ("Chronos syndrome") and treatment response. Circadian disruptions, which are influenced by factors such as seasonality, jet lag, shift work, and childbirth, are hallmarks of mood episodes and are pivotal in transitions between mood states. Longitudinal studies
