Fear plays a crucial role in predator-prey interactions and can have cascading impacts on the structure of whole ecosystems. Comparable fear effects have recently been described for hosts and their parasites but our understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains limited by the lack of empirical examples. Here, we experimentally tested if bivalves Mytilus edulis can potentially 'learn to fear' the infective transmission stages (cercariae) of the trematode Himasthla elongata, and if experienced mussels change their parasite-avoidance behaviour accordingly. Our results show that previous expe

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra are presented for iron complexes of catecholate, tironate, and a 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA)-containing peptide of sequence Ac-Ala-DOPA-Thr-Pro-CONH2 ("AdopaTP"). This peptide was prepared to model potential metal-protein cross-links in the adhesive used by marine mussels, Mytilus edulis, for affixing themselves to surfaces. Spectra are shown for iron bound to each ligand in mono, bis, and tris coordination environments. For example, the catecholate complexes {Fe(cat)}, {Fe(cat)2}, and [Fe(cat)3]3- are provided. Detailed simulations are prese

The effect of synthetic anionic surface active substance (SAS) sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS, 4 mg/l) on the kinetics of water filtration by mussel Mytilus edulis was studied. A suspension of algae Isochrysis galbana was added to the vessel with the mussels, and their filtration activity was measured by counting the concentration of the algae cells in the experimental vessels. Algae concentration was measured every 30 min for an hour and a half. The inhibiting effect on the mollusk filtration rate (FR) was qualitatively described. After the first 30 min filtration at 4 mg/l initial SDS concentrat

The relationship of contracture and exudation of water in frozenthawed frog muscle was studied. With maximum shortening, there was a water loss of 35 per cent of the weight of muscle. By restricting the contraction, it was demonstrated that the amount of water loss was proportional to the degree of shortening, there being no significant loss with isometric contraction. Muscle already shortened by tetanic stimulation also exuded water on subsequent freezing and thawing. The force of contraction could be reduced by depleting the muscle of calcium and it was shown that the amount of water exuded

We measured non-specific immune function of various bivalves from marine (Cyrtodaria siliqua, Mactromeris polynyma, Mesosdesma arctatum, Mya arenaria, Mya truncata, Mytilus edulis, Serripes groenlandicus, Siliqua costata) and freshwater environments (Dreissena polymorpha and Elliptio complanata). We used flow cytometry to quantify the phagocytosis of fluorescent microspheres by hemocytes exposed in vitro to increasing levels of various metal compounds (AgNO(3), CdCl(2), CH(3)HgCl, HgCl(2) and ZnCl(2)). In some species, low doses of mercury (organic and inorganic) and Zn suggest a hormesis-like

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has metal binding properties and decreases the concentration of free metal ions in the aquatic environments. However, humic acids (HA) have been shown to increase Pb bioavailability for marine invertebrates, including Pb toxicity to sea urchin embryos. The low solubility and other properties of commercially available HA, which may not be the most representative fraction of DOM in natural waters, limit the environmental relevance of these findings. The present study tested the effect of more soluble DOM, fulvic acids (FA) and DOM extracted from the Suwannee River

Shellfish poisonings have posed severe risks to human health globally. The Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program was established in 1948 to monitor the toxin levels at shellfish harvesting sites along the coast of six provinces in Canada. Domoic acid has been a causal toxin for amnesic shellfish poisoning, and a macro-scale analysis of the temporal and spatial variation of domoic acid along Canada's coast was conducted in this study. We aggregated the toxin levels by week in blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) samples, respectively, over a one-year scale. The subseq

Characterized by a sessile filter-feeding lifestyle, commercial marine bivalves inhabiting pollution-prone coastal areas may accumulate significant amounts of pollutants, such as antibiotic residues, in their soft tissues and thus pose a potential threat to the health of seafood consumers. Microplastics are another type of emerging pollutant that are prevalent in coastal areas and have been reported to interact with common antibiotics such as enrofloxacin (ENR) and trimethoprim (TMP). Nevertheless, little is known about the impacts of MPs on the accumulation and corresponding food safety risk

The present study explored the ecotoxicology of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and their likely interaction with dissolved metals, with a focus on the effect of in vivo exposure in marine mussels. Any nano-scale effects were negated by the tendency of uncoated SWCNTs to agglomerate in water, particularly with high ionic strength as is the case in estuarine and full-strength seawater. However, SWCNTs, in combination with natural organic matter, remained suspended in seawater for long enough to become available to filter-feeding mussels, leading to their concentration on and increased c

Trematode prevalence and abundance in hosts are known to be affected by biotic drivers as well as by abiotic drivers. In this study, we used the unique salinity gradient found in the south-western Baltic Sea to: (i) investigate patterns of trematode infections in the first intermediate host, the periwinkle Littorina littorea and in the downstream host, the mussel Mytilus edulis, along a regional salinity gradient (from 13 to 22) and (ii) evaluate the effects of first intermediate host (periwinkle) density, host size and salinity on trematode infections in mussels. Two species dominated the tre

Mussels (Mytilus spp.) are an important seafood product and a sentinel species for environmental contamination. This work aimed to analyze Portuguese monitoring data for mussels to identify seasonal and spatial trends in microbiological, biotoxins, and metal contamination. Data, from 2013 to 2025, were obtained from publicly available records from the official control program. Harvested mussels were generally safe for consumption, with most samples complying with microbiological Class A parameters (75.5%) and metals only exceeding regulatory limits once. Conversely, okadaic acid toxin group (i

Gastroenteritis infections in humans are mainly associated with consumption of Vibrio parahaemolyticus contaminated shellfish, which causes health and economic loss. Virulence factor production, antibiotic resistance profile, and biofilm-forming capacity of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates on food and food contact surfaces at 30 °C were investigated to evaluate the antibiotic sensitivity and pathogenic level. Strains of V. parahaemolyticus were isolated from shellfish (e.g., Crassostrea gigas, Venerupis philippinarum, Mytilus coruscus, Anadara kagoshimensis) in Korea. When examined for 17 viru

This study aimed at elucidating whether organic and inorganic forms of mercury contamination differently affect HSP and MXR cytoprotective responses in Mytilus galloprovincialis. Changes of relative transcript levels were assessed in digestive glands of mussels exposed to 0.75 microM CH(3)Hg(+) or Hg(2+) for a maximum of 6 days. CH(3)Hg(+) inhibited MgHSP70 and induced MgHSC70 expression. As previously reported Hg(2+) stimulated MgHSP70 expression and induced MgHSC70 transcripts only after 6 days. The effect of CH(3)Hg(+) or Hg(2+) on the MXR system was investigated after partial sequencing of

Saxitoxin (STX) has proved useful in the isolation and characterization of vertebrate and invertebrate voltage-operated sodium channels. Membrane extracts from the nervous system of the cockroach Periplaneta americana contain a saturable component of specific [(3)H]STX binding. Scatchard analysis yields a K(D) of 0.84 nM, similar to that (3.0 nM) determined in electrophysiological studies on axons in the same tissue (Sattelle et al., 1979). The maximum number of binding sites, B(max) (8.25 pmol/mg protein), was higher than previously observed. The specific binding component was blocked by STX

Environmental research plays a crucial role in formulating novel approaches to pollution management and preservation of biodiversity. This study aims to assess the potential harm of pharmaceutical triclosan (TCS) to non-target aquatic organism, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Furthermore, our study investigates the potential effectiveness of TiO2 and ZnO nanomaterials (TiO2 NPs and ZnO NPs) in degrading TCS. To ascertain the morphology, structure, and stability of the nanomaterials, several chemical techniques were employed. To evaluate the impact of TCS, TiO2 NPs, and ZnO NPs, both phys

Calcium oxide (CaO) is being considered as a possible treatment for both the control of echinoderm populations and the treatment against sea lice infestation in Norwegian salmon farms. CaO particles produce an exothermal reaction when in contact with water, which can cause epidermal burns and lesions to certain target organisms leading to death. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of fine (<0.8 mm) and coarse (<2.5 mm) CaO particles to a range of marine species from different taxonomic groups: two echinoderms (Asterias ruben and Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis); two cru

As a class of low-cost and broad-spectrum antibiotics in wide aquaculture use, residues of tetracyclines (TCs) are imperiling aquatic organisms and public health worldwide, leading to a high demand for TC removal from the aquaculture environment. In addition, considerable consumption of thick-shell mussels generates massive mussel shell waste, and their treatment has been an economic and environmental issue. Herein, a low-cost and high-efficiency mussel shells-based material was successfully prepared for TC removal by thermal modification of shell waste of Mytilus coruscus. Morphological and s

Histidine-rich Glycoprotein (HRG) is the most abundant protein in mussel haemolymph plasma. In this study, we determined by qRT-PCR and FISH analysis the tissues involved in HRG synthesis in Mytilus galloprovincialis. The relative HRG mRNA abundance in haemocytes, digestive gland, gills, gonads, posterior adductor muscle, and mantle edge was evaluated. Immunofluorescence analysis of HRG protein distribution in the whole mussel body was performed by a specific antibody. Our data showed the highest gene expression level of HRG in the mantle edge. In particular the outer fold of the mantle edge w

For over 30 years empirical studies have repeatedly demonstrated that the biosynthesis of morphine by diverse animal and human tissues occurs. Recently, the blue mussel's neural tissues and human white blood cells were used to demonstrate the de novo biosynthesis of morphine for small precursor molecules derived from the aromatic amino acid L-tyrosine. Because catecholamine precursors, i.e., L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), were also found to be utilized as morphine precursors, a novel reciprocally interactive mechanism is apparent that links catecholamine and opioid pathways in the acti

Metal and metalloid contamination from terrestrial and maritime human activities increasingly threatens coastal ecosystems, inducing ecotoxicological effects and potential risks to human health. Filter-feeding intertidal species such as Ruditapes spp. can bioaccumulate these contaminants and are therefore widely used for coastal environmental monitoring. For ecotoxicological purposes, seasonal and spatial concentrations of metals (Al, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and the metalloid As were analysed in sediments and clam tissues from the French English Channel and Atlantic coasts, u
