Nature-based botanical facial oil oxidative stress protection.

INTRODUCTION: UV-induced oxidative skin stress leads to cutaneous photoaging. The objective of these 2 studies was to evaluate a nature-based botanical facial oil for the ability to decrease UV-induced oxidative skin stress. METHODS: 22 females were enrolled in the UVA study, and 10 females were enrolled in the UVB study. Skin chemiluminescence induced by UVA exposure was measured at baseline and after 2 weeks of daily topical application of the nature-based facial oil was evaluated in study 1. In study 2, UVB-induced erythema was measured after 8 weeks of twice-daily topical application of t

Nature, formation, and distribution of carbonates on Ceres.

Different carbonates have been detected on Ceres, and their abundance and spatial distribution have been mapped using a visible and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIR), the Dawn imaging spectrometer. Carbonates are abundant and ubiquitous across the surface, but variations in the strength and position of infrared spectral absorptions indicate variations in the composition and amount of these minerals. Mg-Ca carbonates are detected all over the surface, but localized areas show Na carbonates, such as natrite (Na2CO3) and hydrated Na carbonates (for example, Na2CO3·H2O). Their geological setting

Nature as a source of drugs for ophthalmology.

Nature has always provided an unlimited source of biologically-active compounds. Since the beginning of mankind, humans have sought resources in fauna and flora to treat eye diseases. However, it was only after the Industrial Revolution that extracts of plants and substances of animal origin could be used safely, as has been determined by controlled interventional studies. Two major challenges faced by ocular pharmacology are the following: developing drugs that are able to reduce blindness due to glaucoma; and controlling the pain associated with eye surgery. The search for a drug that effect

Pathophysiology of Autoimmune Bullous Diseases: Nature Versus Nurture.

Pemphigus and pemphigoid are the prototypical immunobullous diseases. Although it has been well established that they are caused by deposition of autoreactive antibodies directed against adherence proteins within the skin, the specific genetic and environmental factors leading to development of these diseases continue to be an area of investigation. Herein, we discuss several of the potential environmental triggers that may induce patients to develop immunobullous diseases including medications, viral infections, UV exposure or other radiation injury and dietary factors. In addition, the poten

The nature and treatment of phonological text agraphia.

Phonological alexia and agraphia are written language disorders characterised by disproportionate difficulty reading and spelling nonwords in comparison to real words. In phonological alexia, it has been shown that, despite relatively accurate reading of words in isolation, text-level reading deficits are often marked and persistent. Specifically, some individuals demonstrate difficulty reading functors and affixes in sentences, a profile referred to as phonological text alexia. In this paper, we demonstrate an analogous manifestation of the phonological impairment on text-level writing and su

Pesticide Chemical Research in Toxicology: Lessons from Nature.

Pesticide researchers are students of nature, and each new compound and mechanism turns a page in the ever-expanding encyclopedia of life. Pesticides are both probes to learn about life processes and tools for pest management to facilitate food production and enhance health. In contrast to some household and industrial chemicals, pesticides are assumed to be hazardous to health and the environment until proven otherwise. About a thousand current pesticides working by more than 100 different mechanisms have helped understand many processes and coupled events. Pesticide chemical research is a ma

The Dual Nature of Nek9 in Adenovirus Replication.

UNLABELLED: To successfully replicate in an infected host cell, a virus must overcome sophisticated host defense mechanisms. Viruses, therefore, have evolved a multitude of devices designed to circumvent cellular defenses that would lead to abortive infection. Previous studies have identified Nek9, a cellular kinase, as a binding partner of adenovirus E1A, but the biology behind this association remains a mystery. Here we show that Nek9 is a transcriptional repressor that functions together with E1A to silence the expression of p53-inducible GADD45A gene in the infected cell. Depletion of Nek9

Borrelia miyamotoi infection in nature and in humans.

Borrelia miyamotoi is a relapsing fever Borrelia group spirochete that is transmitted by the same hard-bodied (ixodid) tick species that transmit the agents of Lyme disease. It was discovered in 1994 in Ixodes persulcatus ticks in Japan. B. miyamotoi species phylogenetically cluster with the relapsing fever group spirochetes, which usually are transmitted by soft-bodied (argasid) ticks or lice. B. miyamotoi infects at least six Ixodes tick species in North America and Eurasia that transmit Lyme disease group spirochetes and may use small rodents and birds as reservoirs. Human cases of B. miyam

False-negative appendicitis at ultrasound: nature and association.

The objective was to describe nature and factors associated with false-negative ultrasound (US) for adult appendicitis. Patients with pathologically proven appendicitis and pre-operative US from January 2011 to May 2013 were included in this retrospective case-control study. They were divided into true-positive and false-negative groups, matched by age and gender. There were 112 patients (40 men, mean age = 40 y, 56 true positives) included. Two factors were found differ significantly: abdominal wall thickness and pain score. Greater abdominal wall thickness (18.6 mm vs. 14.9 mm, p = 0.001) an

Neural correlates of nature stimuli: an FMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Examine whether there are unique patterns of brain activation associated with exposure to photographic sky compositions (representing nature stimuli) as compared with other positive, negative, and neutral images. BACKGROUND: The positive impact of nature images on health outcomes traditionally has been measured using behavioral and physiological indicators. However, there is a lack of understanding of the underlying neural mechanism that explains this positive influence. METHODS: A combination of behavioral responses and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology was

Exploring the nature of therapeutic massage bodywork practice.

BACKGROUND: Research on therapeutic massage bodywork (TMB) continues to expand, but few studies consider how research or knowledge translation may be affected by the lack of uniformly standardized competencies for most TMB therapies, by practitioner variability from training in different forms of TMB, or from the effects of experience on practice. PURPOSE: This study explores and describes how TMB practitioners practice, for the purpose of improving TMB training, practice, and research. PARTICIPANTS SETTING: 19 TMB practitioners trained in multiple TMB therapies, in Alberta, Canada. RESEARCH

Nature versus nurture in gout: a twin study.

BACKGROUND: Gouty arthritis (gout) is the most common inflammatory arthritis in the United States and several other countries. Some rare forms of gout have a known genetic basis, but the relative importance of genetic factors on the risk for the lifetime prevalence of gout is not clear. METHODS: We performed a heritability analysis for hyperuricemia and gout among 514 unselected, all-male twin pairs who were a part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute twin study, a prospective observational cohort study. Statistical analyses were performed using structural equation models and maxi

The nature of neural invasion by pancreatic cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Neural invasion is one of the most important modes of tumor extension in pancreatobiliary tract cancer. However, the precise pattern of neural invasion and the relationship between neural invasion and nodal involvement are unknown. METHODS: Using 8 surgical specimens from patients with pancreatic cancer, 4973 sections were created and examined histopathologically. A total of 961 sections of VX2 tumor grown in the retroperitoneum of rabbits also were examined histologically. The precise mechanism by which neural invasion occurs and the relationship between nerve fascicle and lymph

Sinning against nature: the theory of background conditions.

Debates about the moral and political acceptability of particular sexual practices and new technologies often include appeals to a supposed imperative to follow nature. If nature is understood as the totality of all phenomena or as those things that are not artificial, there is little prospect of developing a successful argument to impugn interference with it or sinning against it. At the same time, there are serious difficulties with approaches that seek to identify "proper" human functioning. An alternative approach is to understand interference with nature as acting in a manner that threate

Experimental studies on the nature of sensitive skin.

BACKGROUND: In the USA, Europe and Japan 40 to 50% of women report that they have sensitive skin, defined as abnormal sub-clinical sensory responses to drugs, cosmetics and toiletries in the absence of visible signs of irritation. Itching, burning, stinging and tightness are the commonest complaints, which mainly afflict women. Manufacturers of skin care products have made available a large variety of products which are designed for persons with sensitive skin. Such products are not required by regulatory agencies to submit evidence of safety and efficacy, allowing marketers to make claims tha

The nature of imagery processes underlying food cravings.

OBJECTIVE: The study used a working memory approach to examine the nature of the imagery processes underlying food cravings. DESIGN AND METHOD: A sample of 60 dieters and 60 non-dieters were asked to imagine either a food induction or a holiday induction scenario. Participants then performed 18 trials of either a visual imagery task (loading the visuo-spatial sketch pad) or auditory imagery task (loading the phonological loop). Food craving was measured before and after the induction scenario, and then after every 6 trials of the imagery task. RESULTS: Craving intensity increased following i
