The association between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and syphilis infection as an etiological factor in Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD) was investigated by means of micro-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Micro-ELISA) and Treposcreen-Rapid Plasma Reagin Card Test in 138 sera from patients with Gestational Trophoblastic Disease. We have found only one sample to be positive for HIV infection and one for VDRL. These findings suggest a lack of an etiologic role for the HIV and Syphilis infection in GTD.

Immunoglobulins A, E and G were studied in serum and nasal secretion from patients with allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinitis and aspirin hypersensitivity, and normal controls. The allergic patients differed from the other groups in having higher IgE values, both in serum and in nasal secretion. The patients with aspirin hypersensitivity did not differ from the control group regarding the IgE values. No difference between the groups was found with respect to IgA and IgG. The results indicate that reaginic antibodies are not involved in causing aspirin hypersensitivity.

Infection of rabbits with Treponema pallidum prior to the 2nd week of life usually resulted in progressive runting leading to death about the 7th–13th week of age. The severity of the disease could be evaluated at any particular time by the percentage weight retardation. In this small series there was a suggestion that the runting index (R.I.) and the presence or absence of reagins might correlate with the prognosis of the disease. Weight retardation of more than 25% and a R.I. of less than 0·81 were usually associated with irreversible, pathological processes refractory to penicillin therapy.

UNLABELLED: We describe a case of a 22-year-old woman living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who presented with classical features of secondary syphilis. Initial Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) testing was unexpectedly non-reactive; however, repeat RPR testing with serum dilution yielded a reactive result, illustrating the prozone phenomenon.
CONTRIBUTION: The prozone phenomenon is uncommon. We aim to encourage clinician-laboratory communication when there is a high pretest probability of syphilis, with serological discordance, to facilitate prompt diagnosis and treatment.

A 41-year-old male, with history of HIV presented to emergency department with two months of abdominal pain and a weight loss. Radiological and endoscopic examinations where suggestive of gastric cancer. However, biopsies ruled out malignancy. The reaginic and anti-treponemal tests were positive, so the histological study was repeated with anti-Treponema pallidum monoclonal antibodies. The presence of spirochetes was confirmed. After three weeks of penicillin-based treatment, the gastric lesions and symptoms were resolved.

A 45-year-old male presented with subacute onset of a right-sided hemiparesis, right homonymous hemianopsia, and slurred speech. The brain imaging revealed two separate intraparenchymal enhancing lesions. The cerebrospinal fluid rapid plasma reagin and venereal disease research laboratory test were positive and consistent with syphilitic gumma, and the patient responded dramatically to penicillin G. Despite, currently low incidence of syphilis; CNS gummas should be in the differential of mass lesions as they are eminently treatable.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the Mediace RPR assay, an automated RPR (aRPR), for syphilis diagnosis and serological follow-up.
METHODS: Serums from patients positively screened for syphilis between January 2017 and December 2019 were retrospectively selected. A focus was performed on patients with a serological follow-up after treatment and/or a reinfection. Serums were tested by both manual (mRPR) and aRPR tests. Categorical and Quantitative Agreements (CA and QA), and serological follow-up conclusions were analyzed.
