Here we present the development of a novel realtime neural controller based on an EMG-driven musculoskeletal model, designed for volitional control of robots and computers. Our controller uniquely enables motion control during both isometric and non-isometric muscle contractions. We address several key challenges in EMG control system design, including accuracy, latency, and robustness. Our approach combines EMG signal processing, neural activation dynamics, and Hill-type muscle modeling to translate neural commands into muscle forces, which can enhance robustness against electrode variability

Accurate characterization of functional connectivity (FC) in neural signals is critical for investigating a wide range of brain disorders and cognitive processes. Conventional approaches typically rely on correlation-based metrics to capture pairwise interactions; however, such measures may fail to capture more global patterns of connectivity. Pairwise Maximum Entropy Models (pMEM) a complementary global perspective by jointly modeling all pairwise interactions, but they can diverge significantly from traditional linear FC measures and are often prone to numerical instability. Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) represent a common and clinically significant cardiac arrhythmia, contributing to a spectrum of cardiovascular disorders. Accurate localization of the origin of PVCs is essential for devising targeted therapeutic strategies and refining our comprehension of ventricular arrhythmogenesis. Traditionally, the 12-lead ECG has been the go-to diagnostic tool for PVCs. However, individual anatomical differences and inter-patient electrophysiology variability limit its effectiveness. This study presents a new method that combines electrocardiographic imaging (E

OBJECTIVE: Altered myocardial fiber arrangement is a hallmark feature in the early stages of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, current medical imaging modalities have limitations in resolving microstructural changes within the myocardium. In this study, we introduce a high-spatiotemporal-resolution polarized microwave-induced thermoacoustic imaging (P-MTAI) technique for in vivo detection of myocardial fiber rearrangement in DCM.
METHODS: Leveraging the anisotropic arrangement and orientation of myocardial fibers, the technique analyzes thermoacoustic signals generated by stimulating the

Distinguishing signal from background in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) micrographs is a critical processing step but remains challenging owing to the inherently low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contaminants, variable ice thickness, and densely packed particles of heterogeneous sizes. Recent image-segmentation methods provide pixel-level precision and thus offer several advantages over traditional object-detection approaches: segmented-blob mass can be computed to suppress false-positive particles, particle centering can be improved by leveraging the full brightness profile, and irreg

Hand-held robotic instruments enhance precision in microsurgery by mitigating physiological tremor in real time. Current tremor filtering algorithms in these instruments often employ nonlinear phase prefilters to isolate the tremor signal. However, these filters introduce phase distortion in the filtered tremor, compromising accuracy. Although improved variants of recursive singular spectrum analysis (RSSA) have addressed the issue of phase distortion, they still face challenges such as reduced generalization performance, large sample delays, and longer computational times. To address these is

Accurate detection of cardiac events can improve cardiovascular monitoring and diagnostics capabilities. Specifically, detecting the fiducial points related to aortic valve opening (AO) and closure (AC) facilitates the extraction of important timing characteristics that are informative of ventricular performance. Seismocardiography (SCG) offers a noninvasive way to observe these mechanical cardiac activities; however, noise from motion or speech artifacts often compromises the reliable detection of these fiducial points, especially during stress testing conditions. Stressors such as exercise a

In high dynamic range (HDR) imaging, exposure parameters determine the efficiency of image acquisition and have a great impact on image quality. Two exposure selection methods are proposed to improve the efficiency of HDR imaging while maintaining image quality. The target signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived from the contrast sensitivity of the human visual system under a given adaptation condition. Combining the target SNR and imaging model, a histogram-independent iterative method and a histogram-based exhaustive method are developed to determine the exposure time set. The two methods are

Camera-based heart-rate monitoring in fitness is compromised by various factors like motion interference and illumination changes. Body motions induced by running significantly change the skin reflections and thus distort the photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals measured by a camera. In this work, we proposed a skin-reflection controlled auto-exposure system to improve the consistency of skin reflections during running. To further increase the motion robustness, we incorporated the continuous exposure time traces obtained from the camera sensor in PPG-extraction using the framework of discrimin

Cough detection is a crucial tool for long-term monitoring of respiratory illnesses. While clinical methods are accurate, they are not available in a home-based setting. In contrast, wearable devices offer a more accessible alternative, but face challenges in ensuring user speech privacy and detecting coughs accurately in real-world settings due to potential poor audio quality and background noise. This study addresses these challenges by developing a small-size multimodal cough and speech detection system, enhanced with an Out-of-Distribution (OOD) detection algorithm. Through our analyses, w

PURPOSE: Using a magnetic resonance (MR) image generation technique with deep learning, we elucidated whether changing the training data patterns affected image generation accuracy.
METHODS: The pix2pix training model generated T1-weighted images from T2-weighted images or FLAIR images. Head MR images obtained at our hospital were used in this study. We prepared 300 cases for each model and four training data patterns for each model (a: 150 cases for one MR system, b: 300 cases for one MR system, c: 150 cases and augmentation data for one MR system, and d: 300 cases for two MR systems). Traditionally, heart murmurs are diagnosed through cardiac auscultation, which requires specialized training and experience. The purpose of this study is to predict patients' clinical outcomes (normal or abnormal) and identify the presence or absence of heart murmurs using phonocardiograms (PCGs) obtained at different auscultation points. A semi-supervised model tailored to PCG classification is introduced in this study, with the goal of improving performance using time-frequency deep features. The study begins by investigating the behavior of PCGs in the time-frequency domain, utilizing the S

Fatigue-induced physiological tremor (FIPT) is undesirable when performing micromanipulation tasks that require high precision. It is important to characterise this form of tremor to aid in identifying and suppressing it from the intended micromanipulation task. Researchers have used surface electromyography (sEMG) and mechanomyography (MMG) separately or in combination to study tremor, which is further processed using Fourier transform-based techniques. The major drawback of using these techniques is that it assumes the signals are linear and stationary. On the contrary, Empirical Mode Decomp

This article presents an overview of existing approaches to perform vectorcardiographic (VCG) diagnostics of ischemic heart disease (IHD). Individual methodologies are divided into categories to create a comprehensive and clear overview of electrical cardiac activity measurement, signal pre-processing, features extraction and classification procedures. An emphasis is placed on methods describing the electrical heart space (EHS) by several features extraction techniques based on spatiotemporal characteristics or signal modelling and signal transformations. Performance of individual methodologie

The quality of heart rate (HR) measurements extracted from human photoplethysmography (PPG) signals are known to deteriorate under appreciable human motion. Auxiliary signals, such as accelerometer readings, are usually employed to detect and suppress motion artifacts. A 2019 study by Yifan Zhang and his coinvestigatorsused the noise components extracted from an infrared PPG signal to denoise a green PPG signal from which HR was extracted. Until now, this approach was only tested on "micro-motion" such as finger tapping. In this study, we extend this technique to allow accurate calculation of

The estimation of the atrial activity (AA) signal from electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings is an important step in the noninvasive analysis of atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common sustained arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice. This problem admits a blind source separation (BSS) formulation that has been recently posed as a tensor factorization, using the Hankel-based block term decomposition (BTD), which is particularly well-suited to the estimation of exponential models like AA during AF. However, persistent forms of AF are characterized by short R-R intervals and very disorganize

Epileptic seizures are characterized by abnormal and excessive neural activity, where cortical network dynamics seem to become unstable. However, most of the time, during seizure-free periods, cortex of epilepsy patients shows perfectly stable dynamics. This raises the question of how recurring instability can arise in the light of this stable default state. In this work, we examine two potential scenarios of seizure generation: (i) epileptic cortical areas might generally operate closer to instability, which would make epilepsy patients generally more susceptible to seizures, or (ii) epilepti

This paper presents an innovative method for multiple lead electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring based on Compressed Sensing (CS). The proposed method extends to multiple leads signals, a dynamic Compressed Sensing method, that were previously developed on a single lead. The dynamic sensing method makes use of a sensing matrix in which its elements are dynamically obtained from the signal to be compressed. In this method, for the application to multiple leads, it is proposed to use a single sensing matrix for which its elements are obtained from a combination of multiple leads. The proposed metho

No consensus criteria exist for recording and analyzing waveforms in clinical electromyography (EMG). There have been significant technical improvements in recent decades that are under-used in both routine practice and research. In current practice, disciplined techniques in acquisition and analysis of signals are required to appropriately define them. As an example, we describe such an exercise in acquisition and analysis. During a routine study, atypical spontaneous activity was encountered. High-quality digital recordings were stored for off-line analysis. These revealed waveforms that cou
