Antibiotic Transport via Runoff and Soil Loss.

Research has verified the occurrence of veterinary antibiotics in manure, agricultural fields, and surface water bodies, yet little research has evaluated antibiotic runoff from agricultural fields. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential for agricultural runoff to contribute antibiotics to surface water bodies in a worst-case scenario. Our hypothesis was that there would be significant differences in antibiotic concentrations, partitioning of losses between runoff and sediment, and pseudo-partitioning coefficients (ratio of sediment concentration to runoff concentration) amo

Sorption of aged dicamba residues in soil.

The effect of aging (residence time in soil) on dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) and a major metabolite, 3,6-dichlorosalicylic acid (3,6-DCSA) sorption was determined in an unamended and a carbon-amended sandy loam and in a silt loam soil. During the incubation, sequential solvent extraction with 0.01 M calcium chloride solution and aqueous acetonitrile + hydrochloric acid was used to determine the solution and sorbed concentrations of dicamba and 3,6-DSCA, and sorption coefficients were calculated. Dicamba was weakly sorbed to soil (Kd < 0.7). In contrast to some other classes of

Rhizobia independently adapt to soil and legume host environments, but soil conditions influence the abundance of high-quality partners.

UNLABELLED: Rhizobia live as free-living microorganisms in the soil and in association with legume hosts. Both environments exert selective pressures on rhizobia, influencing the reproductive success of individual strains (e.g., fitness). The soil, a heterogeneous and fluctuating environment, is often overlooked, and little is known about whether selection in the soil influences the outcomes of the rhizobium-legume mutualism. We exposed a mixture of 68 Sinorhizobium meliloti strains to soil-mediated selection using eight different treatments (temperature, osmotic, and texture perturbations) an

Site-specific associations between soil methylmercury accumulation and plant, soil, and hgcA-associated microbial modules across Chinese coastal wetlands.

Coastal wetlands retain mercury (Hg), but factors associated with methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation may differ among systems. We sampled 105 plots across seven Chinese coastal wetlands and measured total Hg (THg), MeHg, soil properties, plant attributes, and hgcA-associated microbial communities. We calculated the apparent Hg methylation ratio (%MeHg = 100 × MeHg/THg) and examined site-specific associations using ordination, PERMANOVA, Bayesian hierarchical models, variation partitioning, and within-site regressions. THg, MeHg, and %MeHg showed different spatial patterns. Minjiangkou had the h

Variable effects of biochar on soil greenhouse gas emissions: A meta-analysis of climate, soil, and biochar property interactions.

Biochar application has been widely proposed as a climate-smart soil management strategy; however, related biochar studies result on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain highly variable. Therefore, this study conducted a global meta-analysis to synthesize field-based evidence on the effects of biochar addition on soil carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, and to identify the key factors driving response heterogeneity under different environmental and management conditions. A total of 542 paired observations were compiled from published field experiments

A Comprehensive Review on Changes in Rhizosphere Soil Mediated by Microplastics: Soil Property, Microbial Gene Expression and Crop Growth.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution caused by agricultural film residues, organic fertilizer application, sewage irrigation, and atmospheric deposition has gradually become an unignorable interference factor to the sustainable development of the rhizosphere soil and crop in farmland. However, their specific impacts on the rhizosphere and crops remain unclear. Therefore, this review focuses on the current knowledge on the response mechanisms of rhizosphere soil and crops to MP contamination. The density of MPs is generally lower than that of soil mineral particles. Their substantial accumulation in s

Cross-infection by multiple soil-borne pathogens alters the physicochemical properties and microbial community structure of tobacco rhizosphere soil.

Soil-borne diseases of tobacco roots and stems, caused by pathogens including Ralstonia solanacearum (bacterial wilt), Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae (black shank), and root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), represent critical threats to tobacco cultivation. However, information regarding alterations in rhizosphere soil properties and microbial communities following co-infection by multiple soil-borne pathogens remains limited for tobacco-growing regions in Luxi County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. This study therefore investigated rhizosphere soils collected from healt

Relationships between soil health and dynamics of soil potential pathogenic microbiota in functional domains of Xi'an urban greenspaces, China.

Soil potential pathogenic microbiota exacerbate the environment and human health through invading normal tissues of the human body, but their distributions and interactions across functional domains in urban greenspaces are poorly understood. Herein, we collected soil samples from parkland and residential land to explore the relationships between soil health and the dynamics of soil potential pathogenic microbiota. Soil organic matter-associated properties, soil multifunctionality and health were significantly about 30 % higher in parkland, but soil stoichiometry including C/N, C/P, and C/N/P

Soil fertility impact on recruitment and diversity of the soil microbiome in sub-humid tropical pastures in Northeastern Brazil.

Soil fertility is key point to pastures systems and drives the microbial communities and their functionality. Therefore, an understanding of the interaction between soil fertility and microbial communities can increase our ability to manage pasturelands and maintain their soil functioning and productivity. This study probed the influence of soil fertility on microbial communities in tropical pastures in Brazil. Soil samples, gathered from the top 20 cm of twelve distinct areas with diverse fertility levels, were analyzed via 16S rRNA sequencing. The soils were subsequently classified into two

The role of biochar, natural iron oxides, and nanomaterials as soil amendments for immobilizing metals in shooting range soil.

High concentration of toxic metals in military shooting range soils poses a significant environmental concern due to the potential release of metals, such as Pb, Cu, and Sb, and hence requires remediation. The current study examined the effectiveness of buffalo weed (Ambrosia trifida L.) biomass and its derived biochars at pyrolytic temperatures of 300 and 700 °C, natural iron oxides (NRE), gibbsite, and silver nanoparticles on metal immobilization together with soil quality after 1-year soil incubation. Effect of liming on sulfate transformation and sulfur gas emissions in degraded vegetable soil treated by reductive soil disinfestation.

Reductive soil disinfestation (RSD), namely amending organic materials and mulching or flooding to create strong reductive status, has been widely applied to improve degraded soils. However, there is little information available about sulfate (SO4(2-)) transformation and sulfur (S) gas emissions during RSD treatment to degraded vegetable soils, in which S is generally accumulated. To investigate the effects of liming on SO4(2-) transformation and S gas emissions, two SO4(2-)-accumulated vegetable soils (denoted as S1 and S2) were treated by RSD, and RSD plus lime, denoted as RSD0 and RSD1, res

Interactive effects of soil acidity and fluoride on soil solution aluminium chemistry and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) root growth.

A greenhouse study was conducted to determine if concentrations of fluoride (F), which would be added to acid soils via P fertilisers, were detrimental to barley root growth. Increasing rates of F additions to soil significantly increased the soil solution concentrations of aluminium (Al) and F irrespective of the initial adjusted soil pH, which ranged from 4.25 to 5.48. High rates of F addition severely restricted root growth; the effect was more pronounced in the strongly acidic soil. Speciation calculations demonstrated that increasing rates of F additions substantially increased the concen

Quantification of soil-to-plant transport of recombinant nucleopolyhedrovirus: effects of soil type and moisture, air currents, and precipitation.

Significantly more occlusion bodies (OB) of DuPont viral construct HzSNPV-LqhIT2, expressing a scorpion toxin, were transported by artificial rainfall to cotton plants from sandy soil (70:15:15 sand-silt-clay) than from silt (15:70:15) and significantly more from silt than from clay (15:15:70). The amounts transported by 5 versus 50 mm of precipitation were the same, and transport was zero when there was no precipitation. In treatments that included precipitation, the mean number of viable OB transported to entire, 25- to 35-cm-tall cotton plants ranged from 56 (clay soil, 5 mm of rain) to 226

Field evaluation of bone biochar for improving maize yield, soil health, and carbon efficiency in arid soils.

BACKGROUND: the study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of bone-derived biochar, produced from slaughterhouse waste, as a multifunctional soil amendment within a climate-smart and circular agriculture framework. The central research question explores whether biochar can enhance maize (Zea mays) productivity, improve soil health, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in arid agroecosystems. A two-season field experiment was conducted on loamy sand soil under drip irrigation to assess the impact of biochar applied at 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha-1. The responses measured included agronomic traits

Nutrient management in calcareous soils under semi-arid environments: effects on cotton productivity and soil health.

In calcareous and alkaline soils, the availability of essential nutrients is limited, leading to substantial reductions in both yield and fiber quality in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production. This study investigated the effects of different combinations of sulfur (S), zinc sulfate (ZnSO₄), potassium sulfate (K₂SO₄), and urea on cotton yield and soil health in a two-year field experiment conducted under the conditions of the Şanlıurfa–Harran (Türkiye) Plain during the 2023–2024 growing seasons. Six different treatments were applied via soil and foliar application methods, and yield parame

Initial and residual benefits of soil amendments in reducing phosphorus release from soils with simulated snowmelt flooding.

In the Canadian prairies, spring snowmelt occurs rapidly and causes flooding in low-lying areas, inducing anaerobic soil conditions and exacerbating phosphorus (P) release to meltwater. Soil amendments can mitigate P loss from flooded soils soon after amendment application; however, their residual benefits are less understood. We examined the initial and residual benefits of alum (Al2(SO4)3·18H2O), gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), and Epsom salt (MgSO4·7H2O) in a simulated snowmelt flooding experiment. Intact soil columns were taken from amended and unamended field plots in the same year and 1 year after

Degradation dynamics of saflufenacil and tiafenacil in agricultural soils and their impacts on soil microbial networks and carbon-nitrogen cycling.

Herbicides are vital for sustaining global crop production; however, the limited understanding of their residual effects on soil microbial interactions and ecosystem processes leads to an underestimation of their long-term ecological risks to agricultural soil health. This study investigated the degradation dynamics of two novel PPO-inhibiting herbicides, saflufenacil and tiafenacil, and their impacts on microbial networks and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling across five contrasting agricultural soils. Both herbicides dissipated rapidly, with half-lives ranging from 0.8 to 4.1 days, and deg

Temperature and soil pollution affect dissolved and colloidal antimony release from flooded shooting range soils.

Antimony (Sb) mobility in soils, whether dissolved or colloidal, is an emerging concern, yet its geochemical behavior, particularly under future climatic conditions, remains poorly understood. In a 28-day microcosm experiment, we investigated Sb release from two shooting range soils under flooded conditions at 20°C and 25°C. Sequential extractions and pore water analyses were conducted to assess Sb release at different temperatures. Sb size distribution was examined across pore water filtrates and characterized using asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4). The soils had different level
