Studies on the evolution of multiple somatosensory representations in primates: the organization of anterior parietal cortex in the New World Callitrichid, Saguinus.

Because members of the New World family, Callithricidae, are generally regarded as the most primitive of monkeys, we studied the organization of somatosensory cortex in the tamarin (Saguinus) in hopes of better understanding differences in the organization of anterior parietal cortex in primates and how these differences relate to phylogeny. In most prosimian primates only one complete representation of cutaneous receptors has been found in the region of primary cortex, S-I, while in all Old and New World monkeys studied to date, two cutaneous representations exist in distinct architectonic fi

The functional status and columnar organization of single cells responding to cutaneous stimulation in neonatal rat somatosensory cortex S1.

1. An investigation was carried out on single cells in 7 day old rat primary somatosensory cortex, which responded to cutaneous stimulation using mechanical pulses. 3 percent of cells encountered showed stable spontaneous activity, whereas 88 percent were silent in the absence of intentional stimulation. The remainder showed unstable spontaneous activity. In contrast, the great majority of adult cells were spontaneously active in the absence of stimulation, under similar conditions of urethane anaesthesia. 2. The distribution within cortical layers of cutaneously driven cells was similar in ad

Impaired persistence of cortical sensory adaptation following repetitive tactile stimulation in the hindlimb somatosensory cortex of Rett syndrome mice.

Reduced response to repeated stimulation (RS) is a signature feature of sensory systems. In this study we examined cortical sensory responses to brief tactile stimulation of the foot/ankle before, during and after periods of RS in young male, young and old female mice. We compared cortical activity in wild-type (WT) mice to mice with mutation in Mecp2 that causes the neurodevelopmental disorder Rett syndrome (RTT). Intrinsic optical signal imaging (IOS) and intracortical local field potential (LFP) measurements revealed reduced cortical responses to test stimuli on the order of 40-50% after 15

[Acupuncture alleviates inflammatory pain by activating CXCL1/CXCR2 signaling in the primary somatosensory cortex in adjuvant induced arthritis rats].

OBJECTIVES: To observe whether acupuncture up-regulates chemokine CXC ligand 1 (CXCL1) in the brain to play an analgesic role through CXCL1/chemokine CXC receptor 2 (CXCR2) signaling in adjuvant induced arthritis (AIA) rats, so as to reveal its neuro-immunological mechanism underlying improvement of AIA. METHODS: BALB/c mice with relatively stable thermal pain reaction were subjected to planta injection of complete Freund adjuvant (CFA) for establishing AIA model, followed by dividing the AIA mice into simple AF750 (fluorochrome) and AF750+CXCL1 groups (n=2 in each group). AF750 labeled CXCL1

Dose response of somatosensory cortex repeated anodal transcranial direct current stimulation on vibrotactile detection: a randomized sham-controlled trial.

This randomized sham-controlled trial investigated anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the somatosensory cortex contralateral to hand dominance for dose-response (1 mA, 20 min × 5 days) effects on vibrotactile detection thresholds (VDT). VDT was measured before and after tDCS on days 1, 3, and 5 for low- (30 Hz) and high-frequency (200 Hz) vibrations on the dominant and nondominant hands in 29 healthy adults (mean age = 22.86 yr; 15 men, 14 women). Only the dominant-hand 200-Hz VDT displayed statistically significant medium effect size improvement for mixed-model analysi

Intracortical Microstimulation Maps of Motor, Somatosensory, and Posterior Parietal Cortex in Tree Shrews (Tupaia belangeri) Reveal Complex Movement Representations.

Long-train intracortical microstimulation (LT-ICMS) is a popular method for studying the organization of motor and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in mammals. In primates, LT-ICMS evokes both multijoint and multiple-body-part movements in primary motor, premotor, and PPC. In rodents, LT-ICMS evokes complex movements of a single limb in motor cortex. Unfortunately, very little is known about motor/PPC organization in other mammals. Tree shrews are closely related to both primates and rodents and could provide insights into the evolution of complex movement domains in primates. The present study

Augmented Pain Processing in Primary and Secondary Somatosensory Cortex in Fibromyalgia: A Magnetoencephalography Study Using Intra-Epidermal Electrical Stimulation.

The aim of this study was to investigate augmented pain processing in the cortical somatosensory system in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). Cortical evoked responses were recorded in FM (n = 19) and healthy subjects (n = 21) using magnetoencephalography after noxious intra-epidermal electrical stimulation (IES) of the hand dorsum (pain rating 6 on a numeric rating scale, perceptually-equivalent). In addition, healthy subjects were stimulated using the amplitude corresponding to the average stimulus intensity rated 6 in patients with FM (intensity-equivalent). Quantitative sensory testing was p

Tactile spatial attention enhances gamma-band activity in somatosensory cortex and reduces low-frequency activity in parieto-occipital areas.

We investigated the effects of spatial-selective attention on oscillatory neuronal dynamics in a tactile delayed-match-to-sample task. Whole-head magnetoencephalography was recorded in healthy subjects while dot patterns were presented to their index fingers using Braille stimulators. The subjects' task was to report the reoccurrence of an initially presented sample pattern in a series of up to eight test stimuli that were presented unpredictably to their right or left index finger. Attention was cued to one side (finger) at the beginning of each trial, and subjects performed the task at the a

Low test-retest reliability of a protocol for assessing somatosensory cortex excitability generated from sensory nerves of the lower back.

In people with chronic low back pain (CLBP), maladaptive structural and functional changes on a cortical level have been identified. On a functional level, somatosensory cortical excitability has been shown to be reduced in chronic pain conditions, resulting in cortical disinhibition. The occurrence of structural and/or functional maladaptive cortical changes in people with CLBP could play a role in maintaining the pain. There is currently no measurement protocol for cortical excitability that employs stimulation directly to the lower back. We developed a protocol for the measurement of single

Maternal exposure to busulfan reduces the cell number in the somatosensory cortex associated with delayed somatic and reflex maturation in neonatal rats.

Busulfan is a bifunctional alkylating agent used for myeloablative conditioning and in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia due to its ability to cause DNA damage. However, in rodent experiments, busulfan presented a potential teratogenic and cytotoxic effect. Studies have evaluated the effects of busulfan on fetuses after administration in pregnancy or directly on pups during the lactation period. There are no studies on the effects of busulfan administration during pregnancy on offspring development after birth. We investigated the effects of busulfan on somatic and reflex development a

A case of superficial hemisensory dysfunction due to operculo-insular infarction: radiological depiction of thalamocortical projections to the secondary somatosensory cortex.

A 64-year-old obese man developed hypesthesia in the left arm and leg. Neurological examination revealed decreased senses of pain, touch, and temperature in the left face, arm, trunk, and leg. Remaining functions were normal. Electrocardiogram showed atrial fibrillation. Somatosensory-evoked potentials using the stimulation in the median nerve were normal on both sides. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed acute infarction in the right parietal operculum and insula. There were no pathognomonic lesions in the postcentral gyrus, the thalamus, or the brain stem. Cardioembolic operculo-insula

Functional MRI of the primary somatosensory cortex in extinction to simultaneous bilateral tactile stimuli due to right temporal lobe stroke.

Patients with right posterior temporoparietal cortical lesions often exhibit extinction to tactile double simultaneous stimuli (EDSS). It is not known whether sensory unawareness-extinction results from suppression of sensory input into the somatosensory cortex (SI), inhibition of SI, or interference which prevents SI output from activating and being fully processed by association areas. A patient with EDSS due to a right temporal stroke sparing SI and posterior parietal cortex and eight age-matched healthy controls were studied with fMRI during tactile stimulation. The volume of activation of

Abnormal reactivity of the primary somatosensory cortex during the experience of pain in complex regional pain syndrome: a magnetoencephalograhic case study.

A 49-year-old male worker developed persistent pain in his left wrist after work strain injuries. Clinical symptoms met with criteria for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) type I. In the present study, the effect of the experience of pain on the somatotopy of the primary cortical hand representation was investigated. Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEF) elicited by non-painful tactile stimulation at the index finger of the affected and the unaffected hand were recorded when experiencing pain elicited by a moderate physical load condition (holding a 1.6 kg object in the hand). Dynamic changes of touch- and laser heat-evoked field potentials of primary somatosensory cortex in awake and pentobarbital-anesthetized rats.

In this investigation, changes of mechanical- (MEP) and laser-evoked potentials (LEP) in rat primary somatosensory cortex during the course of pentobarbital (PB) anesthesia were examined. Temporal analysis of changes in the magnitude and latency of MEP and LEP, EEG activity, gross motor behaviors, and the tail flick response following laser stimulation before, during, and after PB administration (50 mg/kg, i.p.) was performed and correlated in chronically implanted rats. During the wakeful condition, there were two major cortical components each following mechanical stimulation (MEP1 and MEP2,

The effects of muscimol inactivation of small regions of motor and somatosensory cortex on independent finger movements and force control in the precision grip.

This study investigated the effects of inactivating small regions of the primary somatosensory (SI) and motor (MI) cortex on the control of finger forces in a precision grip. A monkey was trained to grasp and lift a computer-controlled object between the thumb and index finger and to hold it stationary within a narrow position window for 2 s. The grip force applied perpendicular to the object surface, the lifting or load force applied tangentially in the vertical direction, and the vertical displacement were sampled at 100 Hz. Also, the ability of the monkey to extract small pieces of food fro

Connections between area 3b of the somatosensory cortex and subdivisions of the ventroposterior nuclear complex and the anterior pulvinar nucleus in squirrel monkeys.

The goal of this study was to determine whether somatosensory thalamic nuclei other than the ventroposterior nucleus proper (VP) have connections with area 3b of the postcentral cortex in squirrel monkeys. Small injections of the anatomical tracers wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) or 3H-proline were placed in electrophysiologically identified representations of body parts. The results indicate that, besides the well-established somatotopically organized connections with VP, area 3b has connections with three other nuclei of the somatosensory thalamus: the ve

Long-term enhancement of evoked potentials in cat somatosensory cortex produced by co-activation of the basal forebrain and cutaneous receptors.

Averaged evoked potentials from primary somatosensory cortex (SEPs) were recorded before and after pairing the peripheral stimuli with electrical activation of the basal forebrain (BF) in anesthetized cats. Four pulses at 400 Hz were delivered to the BF 120 ms before each cutaneous stimulus and 10 to 660 such pairings were found to produce an enlargement of the SEP in 10 of 11 animals. The average increase in amplitude of the initial peak of the SEP was 69%. The SEP remained enhanced in five of six animals that were tested an hour or more after the pairing, and in one case the SEP was tested 4

Low and high stimulation frequencies differentially affect automated response selection in the superior parietal cortex - implications for somatosensory area processes.

Response inhibition as a central facet of executive functioning is no homogeneous construct. Interference inhibition constitutes a subcomponent of response inhibition and refers to inhibitory control over responses that are automatically triggered by irrelevant stimulus dimensions as measured by the Simon task. While there is evidence that the area-specific modulation of tactile information affects the act of action withholding, effects in the context of interference inhibition remain elusive. We conducted a tactile version of the Simon task with stimuli designed to be predominantly processed

Sequence of abnormal dendritic spine development in primary somatosensory cortex of a mouse model of the fragile X mental retardation syndrome.

Anatomical analyses of occipital and temporal cortex of patients with fragile X mental retardation syndrome (FXS) and in a mouse model of the syndrome (FraX mice) compared to controls have suggested that the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) is important for normal spine structural maturation and pruning. However, a recent analysis of spine properties in somatosensory cortex of young FraX mice has suggested that this region may not exhibit spine abnormalities. While spine abnormalities were present 1 week after birth in somatosensory cortex, by 4 weeks almost all spine abnormalities
