Oxygen transfer in the human cornea: Sensitivity and error-propagation analyses incorporating an oxygen-tension-dependent diffusion coefficient.

Eye diseases and prolonged contact-lens wear can decrease the corneal oxygen diffusion that is essential to metabolic reactions in the human eye. Measuring oxygen diffusion in the cornea is challenging because it is thin (∼500 μm) and its viability must be maintained. An innovative in vivo technique involves placing a contact lens on the corneal surface and its tear film. The inner surface of the contact lens is coated with a photosensitive dye that responds to the oxygen tension by phosphorescence quenching. Corneal properties such as the oxygen diffusion coefficient, maximum oxygen-consumpti

Impact of Vehicle Physicochemical Properties on Modeling-Based Predictions of Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Emulsion Bioavailability and Tear Film Breakup Time.

Several physicochemical parameters are thought to affect in vivo performance of cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion, including globule size distribution, viscosity profile as a function of applied shear, pH, zeta potential, osmolality, and surface tension. Using a modeling approach, this study predicts cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion drug bioavailability to the cornea and conjunctiva and tear film breakup time for human subjects as a function of the vehicle physicochemical properties viscosity, surface tension, and osmolality for products that are qualitatively (Q1) and quantitatively (Q2) the s

Electro-Ribbon Actuator-Driven, Responsive Skating Robot Inspired by Water Striders.

The biomimetic water strider robot is inspired by the biological water strider and is expected to be applied in fields such as environmental monitoring and reconnaissance. However, currently biomimetic water strider robots are mainly dominated by water pressure. This often leads to severe surface interference, high power consumption, and delayed response. Here, we introduce a lightweight (1.37 g) water surface skating biomimetic water strider robot driven by an electro-ribbon actuator, which uses surface tension as the dominant force. This robot eliminates the need for a transmission system an

Tunable wetting mechanism of polypyrrole surfaces and low-voltage droplet manipulation via redox.

This paper presents the experimental results and analyses on a controlled manipulation of liquid droplets upon local reduction and oxidation (redox) of a smart polymer-dodecylbenzenesulfonate doped polypyrrole (PPy(DBS)). The electrochemically tunable wetting property of PPy(DBS) permitted liquid droplet manipulation at very low voltages (-0.9 to 0.6 V). A dichloromethane (DCM) droplet was flattened upon PPy(DBS) reduction. It was found that the surface tension gradient across the droplet contact line induced Marangoni stress, which caused this deformation. Further observation of PPy(DBS)'s co

Marangoni-Effect-Driven Locomotion of Patterned Gels with Evolved Shape Changes and Varied Motion Modes.

The Marangoni effect, driven by interfacial tension gradients, provides a powerful mechanism for achieving autonomous motion in robotics. In gels containing low-surface-tension solvents, motion behavior is primarily governed by solvent-release dynamics and gel's body geometry, which together define the interfacial net force or torque and thus the resulting motion mode. However, conventional systems based on such Marangoni effect exhibit a single, fixed motion mode because the shape and composition of the material are predetermined. Here, we demonstrate a patterned gel with ethanol as the solve

Actomyosin Cortical Mechanical Properties in Nonadherent Cells Determined by Atomic Force Microscopy.

The organization of filamentous actin and myosin II molecular motor contractility is known to modify the mechanical properties of the cell cortical actomyosin cytoskeleton. Here we describe a novel method, to our knowledge, for using force spectroscopy approach curves with tipless cantilevers to determine the actomyosin cortical tension, elastic modulus, and intracellular pressure of nonadherent cells. We validated the method by measuring the surface tension of water in oil microdrops deposited on a glass surface. We extracted an average tension of T ∼ 20.25 nN/μm, which agrees with macroscopi

[Study of interaction of polystirolsulphonate with polymerization degree of 8 and polyallylamin with bilayer lipids membranes].

Interaction of polystirolsulphonate with polymerization degree of 8 (PSS-8) and polyallylamin PAA (molecular mass 60 kilodaltons) with viruses from bloodline of paramixo- and orthomixoviruses by the example of measles virus, parotitis and flu leads to the decreasing of infective activity. The possible mechanism of viral inhibitive action of these chemical compounds is damaging of interfacial antigenic proteins of paramixo- and orthomixoviruses. In this study it was detected the change of surface tension of bilayer lipid membrane in the presence of PSS-8 and PAA. The change of surface tension l

Mechanochemical feedback between confinement and actin crosslinking drives the shape dynamics of liquid-like droplets.

Several actin-binding proteins form phase-separated condensates that promote actin filament assembly and bundling. However, the mechanism by which crosslinker multivalency, actin growth, and condensate mechanics regulate actin organization and droplet shape is not well understood. Here, using a combination of agent-based simulations and experiments, we show that a dynamically deformable droplet interface enables the emergence of tightly-bundled actin rings and weakly-bundled actin discs. We find that crosslinked bundle thickness and droplet diameter follow a power law, consistent with measurem

[Effect of sulfur dioxide on surface activity of the pulmonary surfactants and ultrastructure of type II alveolocytes].

Condition of the surfactant lungs system under sulfur dioxide action in concentration of 0.05 mg/m3 and 0.5 mg/m3 was studied in dynamics (1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days) during the investigation of 108 white rat-males with the help of electronic-microscopic and physic methods. We established that sulfur dioxide decreases the surface activity of the lungs surfactant, damages the ultrastructure of II type of alveolocytes. The greatest changes of the surfactant lung system were induced by inhalation of sulfur dioxide in concentration of 0.5 mg/m3.

The relationship between surface free-energy and kinetics in the mineralization and demineralization of dental hard tissue.

The interfacial free-energy is an important factor in the regulation of mineralization and dissolution at the surfaces of dental hard tissues. However, few thermodynamic studies have been aimed at the elucidation of the interfacial terms. Contact angle measurements (sessile drop and thin layer wicking) and kinetic dissolution and growth techniques have been used to study the interfacial properties of root dentin (D), human enamel (E), and hydroxyapatite (HAP). The interfacial tensions between water (w) and each of these phases were calculated from contact angle data according to surface tensio

Open lung in ARDS.

Every year, millions of patients worldwide receive ventilator support during surgery. Mechanical ventilation has become an important therapy in the treatment of patients with impaired pulmonary function and particularly in patients suffering from adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is caused by multiple factors and is characterized by respiratory dysfunction including hypoxemia and decreased lung compliance. It is known that the decrease in lung distensibility is due to a disturbed surfactant system with an elevated surface tension. This increase in surface tension leads to an inc

Influence of ageing on the gastrointestinal environment of the rat and its implications for drug delivery.

Age-mediated changes in gut physiology are considerations central to the elucidation of drug performance from oral formulations. Using rats of different age groups we measured the pH, buffer capacity, fluid volume, osmolality, and surface tension of gastrointestinal (GI) fluids, and therein explored the impact of these variables on prednisolone and mesalazine solubility in luminal fluids. We also studied the distribution of gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and mucus layer thickness across the GI tract in rats of different age groups. At a mucosal level, there was an increase in GALT from

Surfactant as a carrier: influence of immunosuppressive agents on surfactant activity.

INTRODUCTION: It has been proposed that exogenous pulmonary surfactant can be used as a drug delivery system for immunosuppressive agents to the alveolar compartment of the lung while reducing the risk of systemic toxicity. Before using this combination, however, alterations in activity of both substances should be examined. Therefore, this study investigated whether the activity of a natural derived surfactant preparation is changed after it is mixed with cyclosporine A (CsA) or rapamycin (RPM). METHODS: A surfactant suspension was mixed with CsA or RPM and minimal surface tension of these m

Biomechanical evaluation of tension band placement for the repair of olecranon fractures.

Displaced transverse fractures of the olecranon commonly are treated by open reduction and internal fixation using the AO tension band wiring technique. Reports that the AO technique has a tendency to open the fracture site at the articular surface prompted Rowland and Burkhart to modify placement of the tension band. The present study tested the hypothesis that the modified wire placement provides static compression anteriorly, and hence better reduction at the articular surface of the fracture, than the AO technique under static conditions. Transverse olecranon fractures were created on 8 pa

The Effects of Tensioning of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Graft on Healing after Soft Tissue Reconstruction.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the magnitude of static mechanical tension on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft at the time of surgery on healing within the graft tunnels. Ninety male rats underwent unilateral ACL resection followed by reconstruction with a soft tissue tendon autograft. The ACL graft mechanical environment was modulated by different ACL graft pretension levels at the time of surgery (no pretension: 0N; moderate tension: 5N; over tension: 10N). External fixators were used to eliminate graft and joint motion during cage activity. Graft-tunnel hea

Interaction of surfactant and protein at the O/W interface and its effect on colloidal and biological properties of polymeric nanocarriers.

HYPOTHESIS: The use of polymer-based surfactants in the double-emulsion (water/oil/water, W/O/W) solvent-evaporation technique is becoming a widespread strategy for preparing biocompatible and biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with biomolecules of interest in biomedicine, or biotechnology. This approach enhances the stability of the NPs, reduces their size and recognition by the mononuclear phagocytic system, and protects the encapsulated biomolecule against losing biological activity. Different protocols to add the surfactant during the synthesis lead to different NP colloida

Pulmonary surfactant function following endotoxin: effects of exogenous surfactant treatment.

In a porcine model of endotoxin-induced adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) we tested the hypothesis that the severity of lung injury would vary with the concentration of endotoxin and that reestablishment of normal surfactant function with exogenous surfactant would vary with the severity of lung injury. The therapeutic effects of exogenous surfactant treatment on pulmonary surfactant function have varied greatly in animal models of ARDS. This has created discrepancies in the literature that may be due in part to a difference in the severity of the pulmonary lesion. Yorkshire pigs were

Prewetting dichloromethane induced aqueous solution adhered on Cassie superhydrophobic substrates to fabricate efficient fog-harvesting materials inspired by Namib Desert beetles and mussels.

Namib Desert beetles harvest water from harsh environments by using their hydrophilic-hydrophobic dorsal surfaces. Generally, Cassie-state superhydrophobic materials are chosen as substrates to prepare bioinspired (super)hydrophilic/(super)hydrophobic patterned surfaces. However, due to the low adhesion and strong repellency, aqueous solution cannot be directly set on Cassie superhydrophobic materials until the dropping volume is larger than 6.5 μL. Therefore, arranging a (super)hydrophilic substance on Cassie superhydrophobic substrates to construct (super)hydrophilic/superhydrophobic pattern
