Respond to urban floods and groundwater depletion: A managed aquifer recharge approach to alleviate urban water challenges.

Climate change, rapid urbanization and increasing impervious surfaces influence urban flooding and groundwater depletion in developing cities, leading to chronic water scarcity and posing a severe threat to urban water security. These challenges can be addressed through integrated water management strategies that enhance infiltration and aquifer recharge. This study evaluates the application of Aquifer Storage Transfer and Recovery (ASTR) as a Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) approach by repurposing 23 abandoned wells to inject stormwater during peak rainfall events. A 5-year, 6-h design storm,

A novel framework for urban flood risk assessment integrating probabilistic hazard occurrence and urban environmental response.

Urban flood (UF) risk assessment provides a geographical perspective for addressing threats to urban development and public safety. Although the Hazard-Exposure-Vulnerability (H-E-V) framework is widely used, ambiguous boundaries between Exposure and Vulnerability and unreasonable coupled risk-value distributions may weaken the credibility of spatiotemporal risk representation. To address these issues, this study proposes an optimized urban flood risk (UFR) method oriented toward the hazard-forming process and disaster-bearing environment (DBE) of UF, which clarifies the definitions and quanti

Influence of urban land uses on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances contamination in urban runoff and the receiving marine environment.

Understanding the influence of urban land uses on PFAS contamination in urban runoff and receiving marine environments is critical for effective urban coastal contaminant management. However, data on PFAS contamination in urban runoff and marine receiving environments under low-flow (dry weather) conditions, which represent baseline contamination, are scarce. This study assessed the influence of urban land uses on PFAS occurrence and fate in urban runoff and adjacent marine environments under low-flow conditions. Water and co-located sediment samples were collected from five sites representing

Mitigating traffic-derived NOx in urban areas: Stable isotope evidence of NOx uptake by urban trees.

Quantifying the effect of urban trees on the removal of traffic-derived nitrogen oxides (NOx) is essential for mitigating air pollution. This study employed stable nitrogen isotope and oxygen isotope analyses, in combination with a Bayesian isotopic mixing model, to estimate NOx absorption by urban trees in street and park environments in Shenyang, China. Results revealed that broadleaved species exhibited higher nitrogen absorption of both soil and traffic-derived NOx compared with conifers. Sophora japonica showed the strongest absorption of traffic-derived NOx in parks with a value of 1.68

Towards cleaner air in urban areas: The dual influence of urban built environment factors and regional transport.

Exposure to air pollution significantly elevates the risk of disease among urban populations. Improving city air quality requires not only traditional emission reduction strategies but also a focus on the intricate impacts of the urban built environment and meteorological elements. The complexity and diversity of factors within the urban built environment pose significant challenges to pollution control. This study employs machine learning to predict the spatial distribution of inhalable particulate matter (PM10) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), integrating the clustering of pollutant-emit

Urban Tree Canopy and Environmental Justice: Examining the Distributional Equity of Urban Tree Canopy in Guangzhou, China.

Rapid urbanization has led to a series of environmental problems that are harmful to the physical and mental health of residents. Not only can increasing urban tree canopy (UTC) improve sustainable city development, but it can also effectively promote the quality of life for residents; however, the uneven spatial distribution of UTC can also bring about social justice problems. Currently, there are few studies related to the justice of UTC distribution in China. Based on this, the paper adopts object-oriented image classification technology to interpret and extract UTC data from satellite imag

Explaining the Association Between Urbanicity and Psychotic-Like Experiences in Pre-Adolescence: The Indirect Effect of Urban Exposures.

Urban living is a growing worldwide phenomenon with more than two-thirds of people expected to live in cities by 2050. Although there are many benefits to living in an urban environment, urbanicity has also been associated with deleterious health outcomes, including increased risk for psychotic outcomes particularly when the urban exposure occurs in pre-adolescence. However, the mechanisms underlying this association is unclear. Here, we utilize one-year follow-up data from a large (N=7,979), nationwide study of pre-adolescence in the United States to clarify why urbanicity (i.e., census-tract

Seropositivity and risk factors for Brucella in dairy cows in urban and peri-urban small-scale farming in Tajikistan.

In this cross-sectional study, we assessed and mapped the seroprevalence of brucellosis in small-scale dairy farming in an urban and peri-urban area of Tajikistan and investigated factors associated with seropositivity. As urban and peri-urban farming is both an opportunity to improve the livelihood for small-scale farmers and a potential public health hazard, studies are warranted to reveal possible peculiarities in the epidemiology of brucellosis in this type of dairy farming. In total, 904 cows of breeding age belonging to 443 herds in 32 villages were serologically tested with indirect enz

Environmental hazard of tick-borne diseases in urban and peri-urban sites in an endemic area of eastern France.

The occurrence of the Ixodes ricinus tick in forested and rural areas is well documented across Europe; however, its presence in urban environments remains less investigated. This study focused on the city of Strasbourg, located in eastern France, a region endemic for ticks and tick-borne diseases, to identify high-risk ecosystems along an urbanization gradient. Questing ticks were collected from eight sites: four urban parks, a botanical garden, and three peri-urban forests. A total of 880 ticks were collected, and 657 nymphs were analyzed for the presence of the pathogens Borrelia burgdorfer

Exploring the urban heat island phenomenon in a tropical medium-sized city: insights for sustainable urban development.

Urban Heat Islands (UHI) pose a significant challenge for tropical cities, especially as global temperatures continue to rise. Despite the prevalence of this problem, medium-sized cities in tropical regions remain underrepresented in UHI studies compared to large cities in temperate climates. This study aimed to characterize the UHI effect in a rapidly growing medium-sized city in a tropical region, which has experienced unplanned urban sprawl. Temperature data were collected using data loggers in ten distinct areas of the city. The results revealed a pronounced UHI effect, with higher intensi

When there is no communication between urban planners and public health operators: urban Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in humans.

At the international level, it is necessary to apply urban health strategies that can integrate concrete actions to protect and promote health in urban and architectural planning. In cities, the "urban fauna" mostly consists of synanthropic birds (sparrows, starlings, swallows, martins, jackdaws, crows, hawks, gulls, pigeons) that have adapted to a continuous relationship with humans. These animals enrich the ecological network of biodiversity but also pose health problems. The most successful avian colonizers are pigeons (Columba livia), which proliferate due to the abundance of foo

Characteristics of and variation in airborne ARGs among urban hospitals and adjacent urban and suburban communities: A metagenomic approach.

Environmental antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have received much attention, while the characteristics of ARGs carried by particulate matter (PM) as a function of urban functional region are almost unknown. In this study, ARGs carried by PM2.5 and PM10 in an urban hospital, a nearby urban community and the nearest suburban community were detected using metagenomics. In total, 643 ARG subtypes belonging to 22 different ARG types were identified. The chloramphenicol exporter gene, sul1, bacA, and lnuA were the most abundant ARG subtypes in all air samples. The hospital exhibited higher ARG abu

Detection and characterization of Brucella spp. in bovine milk in small-scale urban and peri-urban farming in Tajikistan.

Brucellosis is one of the most common zoonoses globally, and Central Asia remains a Brucella hotspot. The World Health Organization classifies brucellosis as a neglected zoonotic disease that is rarely in the spotlight for research and mainly affects poor, marginalized people. Urban and peri-urban farming is a common practice in many low-income countries, and it increases the incomes of families that are often restrained by limited economic resources. However, there is a concern that the growing number of people and livestock living close together in these areas will increase the transmission

Bovine leptospirosis in urban and peri-urban dairy farming in low-income countries: a "One Health" issue?

Global trends in urbanization are increasing the spread of neglected zoonotic infections such as leptospirosis, and reducing the number of human cases of leptospirosis is best accomplished by controlling the infection in the animal reservoir. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo and L. interrogans serovar Hardjo (L. Hardjo) exposure and to assess the associated risk factors for infection in small-scale dairy farming in the urban and peri-urban area of Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
