Reversible sulfur dioxide capture by amino acids containing a single amino group at low sulfur dioxide concentrations.

SO2, an air pollutant, is harmful to human health and causes air pollution; therefore, numerous studies have focused on the development of SO2 control technologies. Although limestone- and ammonia-based absorbents have been widely used in wet desulfurization, they are difficult to regenerate and do not enable the recycling of SO2, which is a useful resource. Recently, amino acids have attracted attention as reversible SO2 absorbents because they are eco-friendly and have excellent reactivity with SO2, as well as high regeneration performance. Glycine, L-alanine, β-alanine, 4-aminobutyric acid,

Amino acid absorption by mouse ascites-tumour cells depleted of both endogenous amino acids and adenosine triphosphate.

1. Despite the depletion of both their content of exchangeable endogenous amino acids and reserves of ATP, starved hypo-osmotically shocked preparations of the tumour cells accumulated relatively large amounts of (14)C-labelled 2-aminoisobutyrate, l-alanine, glycine, l-leucine, l-methionine, l-phenylalanine and l-serine, against their respective concentration gradients, by a process apparently driven by the spontaneous flow of Na(+) ions into the cellular phase. Dependent on (a) which compound was used, (b) its concentration and (c) the direction of the Na(+) ion gradient, the peak value of th

A controlled study of protein-sparing therapy after excision of the rectum: effects of intravenous amino acids and hyperalimentation on body composition and plasma amino acids.

This study considers the effects of glucose, during amino acid infusion, on protein-sparing and amino acid utilization after proctocolectomy or abdominoperineal resection of the rectum. Body composition and plasma amino acids were compared in each of three groups of patients before and 15 days after surgery who were receiving, in addition to restricted oral diets: 1) no hyperalimentation 2) parenteral amino acids or 3) hypertonic glucose plus amino acids. Parenteral solutions were given by central venous catheter. Infusion of amino acids alone spared body protein but branch chain amino acids (

Grain starch, fatty acids, and amino acids determine the pasting properties in dry cultivation plus rice cultivars.

A field experiment was conducted to explore the effects of cultivars under flooding irrigation and dry cultivation (D) on starch, fatty acids, and amino acids metabolism, starch physicochemical traits, and pasting properties of rice flour. In this study, high-quality cultivar (HH) had better pasting properties among all other cultivars in D treatment. DHH supported higher short-branch chain amylopectin to develop the crystalline regions. Besides, DHH increased C16:0, C16:1, C18:1, C18:2, glutamate, aspartate, lysine, and threonine, and reduced glutelin and prolamine levels in head rice. Higher

Release of neurotransmitter amino acids from synaptosomes: enhancement of calcium-independent efflux by oleic and arachidonic acids.

The release of preloaded [14C]neuroactive amino acids (glutamic acid, proline, gamma-aminobutyric acid) from rat brain synaptosomes can occur via a time-dependent, Ca2+-independent process. This Ca2+-independent efflux is increased by compounds that activate Na+ channels (veratridine, scorpion venoms), by the ionophore gramicidin D, and by low concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid and arachidonic acid). Saturated fatty acids have no effect on the efflux process. Neither saturated nor unsaturated fatty acids have an effect on the release of [14C]leucine, an amino acid not known

Visible-light-driven photocatalyst-free synthesis of N-aryl amino acids.

A visible-light-driven, three-component coupling for the synthesis of N-aryl amino acids and unnatural peptides is described, which proceeds under mild, catalyst- and photocatalyst-free conditions-even under natural sunlight. Glyoxylates, anilines, and 4-alkyl 1,4-dihydropyridines are efficiently assembled under mild conditions. This transformation exploits the intrinsic photoreactivity of 4-alkyl dihydropyridines, which directly generate alkyl radicals without external photocatalysts or electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes. The reaction displays broad substrate scope, good functional-group

Antagonistic effects of amino acids support abiotic nano-environments in clay.

Prebiotic chemistry in nano-environments confined within catalytic mineral media is emerging as a promising frontier in origins-of-life research. Such confined spaces exhibit physicochemical properties distinct from bulk conditions, enabling out-of-equilibrium processes such as condensation reactions in aqueous media. Here, we demonstrate that a yin-yang interplay of organo-clay interactions generates and supports a variety of confined geochemical nano-environments within clay layers and facilitates the persistence of partial exfoliation. We investigate how the structure of Ca-montmorillonite

Oxidative stress in pigs and opportunities with selenium-containing amino acids.

Modern pig farming practices, characterized by highly-productive and fast-growing genetics, early weaning, and uncontrolled factors such as heat stress and various nutritional challenges, impose cumulative stress on the animal. Elevated concentrations of reactive oxygen species within cells can compromise cellular function and decrease reproductive performance of breeding stock and the growth of progeny up to market age, and deteriorate pork quality, ultimately causing economic losses. Antioxidants and micronutrients can be supplemented in animal feed to alleviated the adverse impact of oxidat

Quantitative analysis of d-amino acids in renal samples using derivatization.

d-Amino acids are the enantiomers of l-amino acids that occur in minimal concentrations within organisms and exert significant effects on physiological regulation and pathological progression. Abnormal d-amino acid levels are closely associated with neurological disorders and metabolic disturbances. The present research is dedicated to establishing a highly sensitive and reliable quantitative detection approach for evaluating metabolic changes in d-amino acids linked to kidney disease, aiming to assist clinical diagnosis. Samples were processed by precipitating proteins, drying them with nitro

Branched-chain amino acids for people with cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy.

RATIONALE: Hepatic encephalopathy is a brain dysfunction characterised by neurological and psychiatric changes due to liver insufficiency or portal-systemic shunting. The severity ranges from minor symptoms to coma. The previous version of this updated review meta-analysed data from 16 randomised clinical trials on branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) versus control interventions, and found that BCAAs did not affect mortality but had a beneficial effect on hepatic encephalopathy. As data on critical outcomes were insufficient and new trials were published, we updated the review again. OBJECTIVE

Temperature-Dependent Transport of Charged Amino Acids in Gold Plasmonic Nanopores.

Understanding and distinguishing amino acids at the single-molecule level is crucial for protein sequencing and disease diagnosis. However, this task remains challenging due to the structural diversity and uniqueness of amino acids. This study employs all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to systematically explore the feasibility of identifying five charged amino acids using thermally modulated gold plasmonic nanopores. The results demonstrate temperature-dependent transport characteristics, where each amino acid exhibits distinct relative conductivity blocking characteristics. As the temper

Dietary exposure to creatine-precursor amino acids in the general population.

BACKGROUND: Creatine is a semi-essential nutrient that plays a critical role in energy metabolism, with dietary intake and endogenous synthesis contributing to overall creatine availability. While dietary creatine intake has been studied extensively, limited data exist on the dietary exposure to its precursor amino acids-glycine, arginine, and methionine-and their contribution to endogenous creatine synthesis. This study aimed to assess the dietary intake of these precursors in U.S. children and adults using data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) and

Utilization of fluorinated α-amino acids in small molecule drug design.

INTRODUCTION: Fluorinated amino acids (FAAs) are at a focal point of two key current strategic areas within drug discovery being both important for the design/development of new small molecule drugs as well as having the potential to be exploited in the rapidly expanding area of peptide-based therapeutics. Their exquisite modularity, synthetic versatility, and extensive commercial availability coupled with the robust understanding of the roles that fluorine can play, and which improves their potency and physicochemical properties of drug candidates, have enabled FAAs to be widely used in numer
