Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma Outcomes and Cost: Analysis of the Kids' Inpatient Database.

OBJECTIVE: To report trends in Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA) hospitalizations and identify key factors affecting treatment outcomes and cost of care in JNA patients. METHODS: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Kids' Inpatient Database was queried for all cases of JNA between the years of 1997 and 2016. Key factors extracted were patient demographics, geographic region, hospital size, teaching status, elective admissions, and number of diagnoses and procedures performed during the hospitalization. These elements were correlated to length of stay (LOS) and cost-per-

Bilateral blindness following anterior nasal packing in a case of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

BACKGROUND: Epistaxis is the most common ENT emergency encountered in the Emergency Department. Most cases can be managed by simple anterior nasal packing. This is usually a safe and very effective option in an emergency situation, requiring minimal expertise and infrastructure. This paper describes a rare instance of a serious complication following anterior nasal packing in a case of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old man diagnosed with nasopharyngeal angiofibroma presented to the Emergency Department with bilateral epistaxis. The patient was stabilised and anterior nas

Spontaneous ICA rupture: a severe late complication after giant nasopharyngeal angiofibroma resection.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign vascular tumor occurring in young males. Surgery for giant JNA is a complex procedure, with a high risk of major complications. We report a rare case of massive epistaxis in a 15-year-old boy resulting from spontaneous rupture of the intracavernous tract of the internal carotid artery 20 days after resection of a giant JNA by midface degloving. The event was managed by an emergency arteriography with coils selectively deployed to occlude the vessel and to stop hemorrhage. This treatment has been shown to be effective in producing immediate

Cellular angiofibroma with atypia or sarcomatous transformation - case description with literature review.

Cellular angiofibroma (CAF) is a rare, benign, mesenchymal tumor. It was first described by Nucci et al. in 1997 and then in 1998 by Laskin. The tumor occurs predominantly in the vulvo-vaginal or inguino-scrotal region. We present a 71-year-old male, who was referred to the Bielanski Hospital with a three months' history of a slowly growing nodule in the right groin. Gross examination showed a well-circumscribed tumor attached to the spermatic cord and measuring 6 cm in the greatest dimension. Microscopic examination of the tumor showed a spindle cell lesion with a loose, myxoid, partly collag

Staging and surgical approaches in large juvenile angiofibroma--study of 95 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Surgery has been the treatment of choice for juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) and selection of proper surgical approach depends primarily upon the extensions of the tumor. Minimal external deformity/surgical scar without affecting growth pattern of facial skeleton of patient along with extensions of JNA were the basis of selecting surgical approach in present study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The medical records of 95 patients with histologically proven large JNA who underwent treatment in our institution between 1992 and 2002 were reviewed retrospectively. Inclusion criter

Denker operation is an effective surgical approach in managing juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

This article presents our experience with the various surgical approaches for angiofibroma and establishes the Denker procedure as an effective approach for removal of the tumor. The medical records of 29 patients treated between the years 1981 and 2001 were examined. The clinical extent of the tumor, the surgical approach, complications, and recurrences were evaluated. The surgical approaches used before 1992 consisted of the transnasal, transpalatal, and combined transnasal-transpalatal ones. Although no major recurrence or major morbidity was observed, late complications occurred, such as p

Endoscopic transnasal resection of a juvenile angiofibroma using an ultrasonically activated scalpel.

We report a case of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA). A 19-year-old male came to our clinic complaining of severe nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Imaging investigations using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging techniques revealed a soft tissue mass in the nasopharynx with minimal extension to the pterygopalatine fossa. After embolization of the internal maxillary artery, we successfully performed endoscopic transnasal surgery for a JNA using an ultrasonically activated scalpel. Endoscopic follow-up for the 18 months after the surgical procedure revealed no evidence o

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease after extracranial dura mater embolization for a nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

We report a 25-year-old man with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) who had received dura mater embolization in the external carotid artery for a nasopharyngeal angiofibroma 90 months earlier. The patient was heterozygotous (Met/Val) at codon 129. This case suggests that dura mater embolization can be responsible for the CJD.

Vulvar Cellular Angiofibroma With Cytologic Atypia and Sarcomatous Transformation: A Clinicopathologic Analysis.

Cellular angiofibromas (CAFs) are benign mesenchymal neoplasms of the vulva and lower genitourinary tract. Although most cases are benign with excellent prognosis, data on CAFs with cytologic atypia (aCAF) and sarcomatous transformation (tCAF) is limited. We identified 13 vulvar CAFs comprising 4 aCAFs and 9 tCAFs. The median age at presentation was 49  yr (40-84). All tumors involved the subcutis with a median size of 4.75 cm (0.8-11.7). Vascular and stromal hyalinization was present in all cases. Fascicular growth pattern and chronic perivascular inflammation were seen in 10 cases, followed

[Primary juvenile nasal angiofibroma in a 38 year-old male (case report)].

Juvenile nasal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign, fibro-vascular, locally aggressive tumor with invasive growth patterns and high probability of recurrence. JNA present exclusively in adolescent boys between 9 and 19 years of age, total about 0.05% of head and neck tumors. 143 patients with JNA had been treated surgically from 2002 to August 2018 at N.N. Burdenko National Medical Research Center for Neurosurgery. All patients (primary and recurrences) were males of the age 7-38 years (16.1 [11.3; 19] years). The age of patients with primary JNA was less than 18-year old, of the exception of prese

Nasopharyngeal rhinosporidiosis with intracranial extension masquerading as juvenile angiofibroma: an unusual entity.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic fungal inflammatory disease prevalent in India and Sri Lanka. Its manifestations are mostly nasal and extranasal lesions are relatively rare. Occasional atypical presentations of this disease lead to diagnostic dilemma. Herein we report on a case of nasopharyngeal rhinosporidiosis having extensive involvement of paranasal sinuses along with intracranial extension which mimicked radiologically as juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of rhinosporidiosis having intracranial extension. We discuss the pathology, treatm

Paratesticular cellular angiofibroma with atypical (bizarre) cells: case report and literature review.

We report the extremely unusual occurrence of a cellular angiofibroma (CAF) with atypical (bizarre) cells in the spermatic cord. We present a 63-year-old man, who was referred to the Urology Service with a six-month history of a slowly growing painless nodule in the right inguino-scrotal area. The clinical impression was that of a lipoma. The mass was locally excised. Gross examination showed a well-circumscribed neoplasm attached to the spermatic cord and measuring 5cm in the greatest dimension. Microscopic examination of the tumor showed the appearance of CAF with scattered severely atypical

Cellular angiofibroma with atypia or sarcomatous transformation: clinicopathologic analysis of 13 cases.

Cellular angiofibroma is a mesenchymal neoplasm that is characterized by a bland spindle cell component, morphologically reminiscent of spindle cell lipoma, and thick-walled vessels. The tumor occurs equally in men and women and usually arises in the inguino-scrotal or vulvovaginal regions. An earlier study of 51 cases from our group showed that the tumor follows a benign course without any tendency for recurrence. In 1 case, an intralesional microscopic nodule of pleomorphic liposarcoma was observed. The biologic significance of atypia or sarcomatous transformation in cellular angiofibroma re

Le Fort I osteotomy for extensive juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, nonencapsulated, benign neoplasm typically diagnosed in adolescent boys. Surgery is the usual treatment modality for JNA. The optimal surgical procedure should allow maximal exposure of the tumor for complete excision with minimum morbidity. One possible surgical approach is Le Fort I maxillary osteotomy. The aim of this study was to review our experience with the Le Fort I osteotomy and to investigate the feasibility of this approach for extensive JNA invaded into pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae. METHODS: We retrosp

Cellular angiofibroma: a benign neoplasm distinct from angiomyofibroblastoma and spindle cell lipoma.

Four cases of a distinctive soft-tissue tumor of the vulva are described. They were characterized by occurrence in middle-aged women (39-50 years), small size (< 3 cm), and a usually well-circumscribed margin. The preoperative clinical diagnosis was that of a labial or Bartholin gland cyst in three of the four cases. The microscopic appearance was remarkably consistent and was characterized by a cellular neoplasm composed of uniform, bland, spindled stromal cells, numerous thick-walled and often hyalinized vessels, and a scarce component of mature adipocytes. Mitotic activity was brisk in thre

Cellular angiofibroma arising from the rectocutaneous fistula in an adult: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Rectocutaneous fistulae are common. The infection originates within the anal glands and subsequently extends into adjacent regions, ultimately resulting in fistula development. Cellular angiofibroma (CAF), also known as an angiomyofibroblastoma-like tumor, is a rare benign soft tissue neoplasm predominantly observed in the scrotum, perineum, and inguinal area in males and in the vulva in females. We describe the first documented case CAF that developed within a rectocutaneous fistula and manifested as a perineal mass. CASE SUMMARY: In the outpatient setting, a 52-year-old male pat
