Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare recurring inflammatory disorder with variable clinical course. It has been described mainly in Caucasian population. Reports from other ethnic groups are few. We report seven cases of relapsing polychondritis in south Indian population. In between 1995 and 2008, seven patients fulfilling the McAdam-Damiani-Levine criteria for diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis were identified. Records pertaining to these patients were studied and clinical presentation, course, and treatment offered were analyzed retrospectively. The female-to-male ratio in our series

Progressive sensorineural hearing loss (PSNHL) is an important clinical entity that can develop rapidly and evolve to deafness. The causes of PSNHL can be divided into hereditary, developmental, infectious, autoimmune, metabolic, vascular, neoplastic, toxic and degenerative, even if the origin of the hearing impairment often remains unknown and a diagnosis of idiopathic PSNHL is made. In order to establish the etiology of the hypoacusia or to rule out any known etiology of PSNHL and to diagnose an idiopathic form, a detailed family, physiological and medical history has to be obtained, includi

Sensorineural hearing loss in early childhood may severely interfere with normal speech and language development. This by itself requires pursuit of an effective therapeutic procedure. Here we report the results of therapy with a rheological agent and procaine-HCl with or without the addition of steroids. Immunological testing was also studied for possible circulating antibodies in sera of affected children. Retrospective analysis of therapeutic results showed that the therapeutic procedure employed may be beneficial, since hearing improved considerably in some cases. Since an autoimmune-relat

This narrative review focuses on the epidemiologic, clinical, and molecular aspects of Meniere disease, comparing studies from European and East Asian populations. Meniere disease is a complex, heterogeneous, chronic disorder of the human inner ear characterized by recurrent episodes of spontaneous vertigo, fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. The overall prevalence of Meniere disease is generally between 0.05% and 0.2% among adults worldwide. In Europe and North America, the reported point prevalence is generally higher than in East Asia, at ∼50-200 per 100,000

BACKGROUND: The role of T cells in health and disease has already been studied extensively in many organs, yet their activity in the cochlea and involvement in hearing loss remains less explored. This review aims to summarize current existing literature on the presence and activity of T cells in the cochlea and the link between T-cell activity and the development of hearing loss.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed on PubMed and Web of Science on the 4th of December 2024 using the following search term: ("T-cell" OR "T cells" OR "T-lymphocyte*") AND ("cochlea*" OR "sp

Background: Anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS) has emerged as a significant issue in autoimmune diseases over recent decades. Its hallmark feature is thromboembolic events, potentially affecting any vascularized area including the microcirculation of the inner ear. Since the first case report of APS-related audiovestibular dysfunction described in 1993, numerous reports have explored the association between APS-related antibodies and audiovestibular dysfunction. These studies indicate a higher prevalence of APS-related antibodies in patients with sensorineural hearing loss compared to healthy co

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) affects over 1.5 billion individuals worldwide and remains the most prevalent sensory deficit in humans. Although classical pathological models have emphasized hair cell death from oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, accumulating evidence over the past decade has redefined the cochlea as an immunologically active tissue rather than an immune-privileged organ. Resident macrophages populate the spiral ligament, stria vascularis, spiral ganglion, and modiolus, and they orchestrate both protective and damaging responses to acoustic, ototoxic, metabolic

HYPOTHESIS: Ossification of the cochlea was once considered to be a contraindication for cochlear implantation. Advances in cochlear implant technology and coding strategies have led to developments in different surgical procedures to manage cochlear ossification. The endoscopic technique allows a direct approach to the round window and the cochlea, especially in remodeled labyrinth, allowing a better vision of scala tympani.

INTRODUCTION: Cogan's syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease typically affecting the ocular and audiovestibular system. Inner ear involvement is associated with a poor prognosis, as despite therapy, over 50% of patients develop profound deafness. The standard treatment remains the use of high dose glucocorticosteroids and immunosuppressants. Studies from recent years have reported significantly higher rates of improvement and recovery among patients treated with biologic disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs), particularly infliximab.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 39-year-

In this study, we investigated the relative localization of some antigenic epitopes in the inner ear. The inner ear protein antigens were extracted from various parts of the guinea pig inner ear. Brain, kidney, lung, heart and liver extracts were also obtained. We found by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis that total inner ear extracts separated into three high concentration polypeptide bands with molecular weights of approximately 30, 42, 58 kd and three low density bands of 20, 25 and 35 kd. The 30 kd band was found mainly in the extract of the spiral ganglion and the acoustic nerve in

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is suspected to be an autoimmune disease directed preferentially against hair follicles (HF) affecting both humans and various mammalian species. Recently, two rodent models of AA were described, namely the ageing C3H/HeJ mouse and the DEBR rat. Despite several case reports of canine AA in the literature, there has been no systematic assessment of the disease in these companion animals, and it is also not known whether dogs with AA could be useful as an outbred homologue of this disease in humans.

CONCLUSIONS: Although vestibular recovery was observed after steroid treatment, it remains uncertain whether this improvement was spontaneous or due to medication. These data do not allow us to generally recommend corticosteroid treatment in patients with BVF and inner ear antibodies.
OBJECTIVE: A retrospective study was performed based on the observation of two patients with suspected autoimmune bilateral vestibular failure (BVF) with normal hearing and antilabyrinthine or nervous tissue-specific serum antibodies who showed vestibular recovery after corticosteroid treatment.

Acoustic trauma, autoimmune inner ear disease, and presbycusis feature loss of the integrity of the blood-labyrinth barrier (BLB). Normal BLB function depends on endothelial structural integrity, which is supported and maintained by tight junctions and adherens junctions within the microvascular endothelial layer. When these junctions are disrupted, vascular leakage occurs. Tight junctions and adherens junctions are functionally and structurally linked, but the exact signaling pathways underlying their interaction remain unknown. In addition, solute carriers (SC) are essential for optimal exch
