An analysis of work environments and operations in hot and humid areas.

Crews on tankers traveling and hauling cargo on the lower reaches of the Mississippi River during the hot and humid (H&H) summer season face various occupational safety and ergonomics problems. Evaluation of medical data reveals that a large number of the crewmembers experience job related injuries, diseases, disorders, and exhaustion as a result of adverse environmental conditions (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH], 1993). The accidents and injuries that occurred were characterized and then analysis was used to recommend constructive remedies and solutions. The res

Insidious hypothermia during raft use.

It is commonly thought that increasing protection against cold water results in greater physiological efficiency in maintaining core temperature. To examine the relationship of physiological changes resulting from cold exposures as a function of increased insulation, five subjects (4 males, 1 female) wearing anti-exposure ensembles covering the entire body and head were exposed in a pool to water temperatures (Twater) = 4.4 degrees C and air temperatures (Tair) = 5.6 degrees C. Trials consisted of subjects undergoing either head-out immersions with mean exposure time (t = 150 +/- 9 S.E.M. min)

Thermal responses to 5.6-GHz radiofrequency radiation in anesthetized rats: effect of chlorpromazine.

Anesthetized rats were exposed to 5.6-GHz continuous wave radiofrequency radiation at an average power density of 60 mW/cm2 (average specific absorption rate 12 W/kg). Exposure was performed to raise colonic temperature from 38.5 to 39.5 degrees C. Following acute administration of chlorpromazine, body temperature exhibited a faster return to baseline temperature when exposure was discontinued. When exposure was initiated at 38.5 degrees C and continued until lethal temperatures resulted, chlorpromazine-treated animals exhibited significantly shorter survival times than saline-treated animals.

Effect of wet clothing removal on skin temperature in subjects exposed to cold and wrapped in a vapor barrier: a human, randomized, crossover field study.

BACKGROUND: Prehospital care for cold-stressed and hypothermic patients focuses on effective insulation and rewarming. When encountering patients wearing wet clothing, rescuers can either remove the wet clothing before isolating the patient or isolate the patient using a vapor barrier. Wet clothing removal increases skin exposure but avoids the need to heat the wet clothing during rewarming. Leaving wet clothing on will avoid skin exposure but is likely to increase heat loss during rewarming. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of wet clothing removal compared to containing the moisture us

Critical water temperature during water immersion at various atmospheric pressures.

The present work was undertaken to determine the effect of atmospheric pressure [ranging from a high altitude of 4,300 m above sea level or 0.6 atmospheres absolute (ATA) to depths of 10 m deep or 2 ATA] on the critical water temperature (Tcw), defined as the lowest water temperature a subject can tolerate at rest for 2 h without shivering, of the unprotected subject during water immersion. Nine healthy males wearing only shorts were subjected to immersion to the neck in water at 0.6, 1, and 2 ATA while resting for 2 h. Continuous measurements included esophageal (Tes) and skin (Tsk) temperatu

[Thermal stress. Dangers, tolerance, prevention and cure].

The Authors after a description about the thermoregulation processes and after having considered the tolerance of the human body to the thermic stress, point out the dangers of the exposure to the high or low temperatures in some labour conditions and, in particular; in the aerospace ambient. A great importance is attached to the method of prediction of individual tolerance to varied temperatures. Lastly the Authors discuss the prevention and treatment of heat-stroke and of frost-bite.

Thermoregulatory aspects of environmental exposure to anticholinesterase agents.

Anticholinesterase (antiChE) agents can be highly toxic to birds and mammals and constitute a major proportion of the pesticides used throughout the world. AntiChEs consist of the organophosphates (OP), which irreversibly inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and the carbamates (CB), which reversibly inhibit AChE. AChE inhibition elicits cholinergic stimulation in the central nervous system and in peripheral tissues and organs, which can lead to marked dysfunction of homeostatic systems, including temperature regulation. The control of body temperature uses cholinergic pathways in th

Compensation for environmental change by complementary shifts of thermal sensitivity and thermoregulatory behaviour in an ectotherm.

Thermoregulating animals are thought to have evolved a preferred body temperature at which thermally sensitive performance is optimised. Even during thermoregulation, however, many animals experience pronounced variability in body temperature, and may regulate to different body temperatures depending on environmental conditions. Here we test the hypothesis that there is a trade-off between regulating to lower body temperatures in cooler conditions and locomotory and metabolic performance. Animals (estuarine crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus) acclimated to cold (N=8) conditions had significantly l

Maintenance of core temperature in SCUBA divers in cold water: contributions of anthropometrics, suit type, and sex.

Maintenance of core temperature (Tc) is vital for health and physiological function while SCUBA diving in cold water, but there is little research investigating the influence of anthropometrics, suit type, and sex on the rate of change in Tc during real-world diving conditions. We measured the rate of change in Tc (telemetric pill) and thermal sensation (Ts; Young questionnaire) in 62 participants (32 female) before and after non-decompression SCUBA dives using open circuit apparatus breathing air at varied depths and durations in cold water (~ 10 °C). Twenty-three participants wore drysuits (

Wet military uniforms pose low risk of hypothermia while static in mild cold air.

Wet clothing is less insulative than dry clothing and consequently increases heat loss in cold air. Tactical necessity can render removal of wet clothing impossible and/or require Warfighters to remain static to avoid detection, limiting heat production and posing a threat of hypothermia (core temperature <35 °C). This study aimed to characterize body temperatures and evaluate hypothermia risk while statically exposed to 5 °C air wearing three wet military uniforms. Further, low-speed loaded walking was evaluated as a strategy to raise end-static temperatures. Twelve adults (11 M, 1 F) randoml

Influence of sex and biological maturation on the sudomotor response to exercise-heat stress: are girls disadvantaged?

Both adult females and children have been reported to have a lower sweating capacity and thus reduced evaporative heat loss potential that may increase their susceptibility to exertional hyperthermia in the heat. Compared with males, females have a lower maximal sweat rate and thus a theoretically lower maximum skin wettedness due to a lower sweat output per gland. Similarly, children have been suggested to be disadvantaged in high ambient temperatures due to a lower sweat production and therefore reduced evaporative capacity, despite modifications of heat transfer due to physical attributes a

Effect of change in ambient temperature on core temperature during the daytime.

In this study, the hypothesis is tested that continuous increases in ambient temperature (Ta) during daytime would give elevated core and skin temperatures, and consequently better thermal sensation and comfort. Rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperatures and regional dry heat losses at 7 sites were continuously measured for 10 Japanese male subjects in three thermal conditions: cond. 1, stepwise increases in Ta from 26 °C at 9 h00 to 30 °C at 18 h00; cond. 2, steady Ta at 28 °C from 9 h00 to 18 h00 and cond. 3, stepwise decreases in Ta from 30 °C at 9 h00 to 26 °C at 18 h00. Genotype-by-environment interaction with broiler genotypes differing in growth rate. 1. The effects of high ambient temperature and naked-neck genotype on lines differing in genetic background.

High ambient temperature (AT) significantly depresses growth rate and meat yield of commercial broilers, thus making it a major factor hindering poultry meat production, especially in hot climates. The effects of high AT were variably moderated when feather coverage was reduced by the naked-neck gene (Na). In this study, the effects of high AT and Na were investigated in broiler progeny of hens from a sire line and two dam lines, differing in growth rate and meat yield due to different breeding histories. Heterozygous naked-neck (Na/na) males were mated with normally feathered (na/na) hens fro

The effect of sudden solar exposure on thermophysiological parameters and on plasma prolactin and cortisol concentrations in male Creole goats.

Rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rhythm (RR), plasma cortisol and prolactin (PRL) levels and haematocrit were measured at noon in male Creole goats during their habituation to shade, during sudden exposure to sunlight and then while they were kept outdoors. Data on the microclimatic environment, especially black-globe temperature (Tg), were recorded. On the day (DO) the bucks were put in the sun, the increase of RT and RR, characteristic of circadian rhythm, was amplified (RT: 40.84 +/- 0,23 degrees C vs 39.48 +/- 0.19 degrees C P less than 0.001; RR: 98 +/- 22 vs 35 +/- 3 respirations/min

Molecular characterization of circannual interval timing in the preoptic area and anteroventral periventricular nucleus in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Most temperate animals exhibit seasonal rhythms in reproductive physiology and behaviour. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) cells in the preoptic area (POA) and kisspeptin (Kiss) cells in the anteroventral periventricular (AvPv) nucleus are critical for timing photoperiod-induced changes in seasonal reproduction. In response to prolonged exposure to photoperiod cues, many rodents exhibit endogenously generated programmed changes in physiology that reflect a circannual timing mechanism. Here we used transcriptome sequencing coupled with measurements of surface body temperature and testes ma

Exercise thermoregulation and hyperprolactinaemia.

The anterior pituitary hormone prolactin (PRL), measured in the peripheral blood circulation, reflects alterations in central brain 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) and dopaminergic activity and is used as a marker of 'central fatigue' during active heat exposure. Significant correlations have consistently been found between PRL and core temperature (T(CORE)) during prolonged exercise. There has been no investigation into the relationship between PRL and other key thermoregulatory variables during exercise, such as weighted mean skin (T(SK)) and mean body temperature (T(B)), heat storage (HS),
