Integrative and Natural Approaches to Thyroid Nodule Treatment: Evidence and Emerging Trends.

ABSTRACT: Thyroid nodules are a prevalent clinical finding, often benign in nature, yet capable of causing compressive symptoms, aesthetic concerns, or raising suspicion for malignancy. Conventional management strategies-ranging from active surveillance to surgical excision-are effective but may not be suitable or preferred by all patients due to invasiveness, cost, or potential complications. Consequently, there is an increasing interest in natural therapies as complementary or alternative approaches to managing thyroid nodules. This review critically examines the current evidence on natural

Synthesis of Novel Zwitterionic Surfactants: Achieving Enhanced Water Resistance and Adhesion in Emulsion Polymer Adhesives.

Recent advancements in polymer materials have enabled the synthesis of bio-based monomers from renewable resources, promoting sustainable alternatives to fossil-based materials. This study presents a novel zwitterionic surfactant, SF, derived from 10-undecenoic acid obtained from castor oil through a four-step reaction, achieving a yield of 78%. SF has a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 1235 mg/L, slightly higher than the commercial anionic surfactant Rhodacal DS-4 (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate), and effectively stabilizes monomer droplets, leading to excellent conversion and stable

Effects of steroids and immunosuppressive drugs on endotoxin-uveitis in rabbits.

Anti-inflammatory actions of dexamethasone (DEXA), Cyclosporin A (CSA) and Rapamycin (RAPA) were assessed on uveitis induced by intravitreal E-coli Endotoxin (100ng) in rabbits at 24 hrs. In this model, endotoxin caused a breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier (BAB) and polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) infiltration into the aqueous humor (AH) and iris-ciliary body (ICB). Intramuscular (I.M.) DEXA (2mg/kg) but not topical DEXA (0.1% 6 x daily) inhibited AH leukocytes and protein level. However, both routes caused an inhibition of AH Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and Leukotriene B4 (LTB4). In the I

Clotrimazole and bifonazole in the topical treatment of Candida keratitis in rabbits.

Using a reproducible model of Candida albicans keratitis in rabbits we studied the effect of topical clotrimazole and bifonazole. Candida albicans DSM 70010 (2.5 X 10(5) cells) was injected into the corneal stroma of both eyes of 28 rabbits. All eyes developed a corneal ulcer. Fourty-eight hours after inoculation the animals were divided into four groups: I (14 eyes) receiving 10 X clotrimazole 1% drops and subsequently removing the epithelium; II (14 eyes) receiving only clotrimazole drops; III (8 eyes) receiving 6 x bifonazole 1% drops and IV (19 eyes) serving as control (0.9% NaCl castor oi

Hypokinetic Activity of Menthofuran on the Gastrointestinal Tract in Rodents.

The acute toxicity and hypokinetic activity induced by menthofuran on the gastrointestinal tract of rodents were investigated in the present study. An absence of acute toxicity was observed. Menthofuran delayed gastric emptying at oral doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg in the experimental model of phenol red, as well as it reduced the intestinal transit at oral doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg. Interestingly, a scopolamine-similar hypokinetic effect was observed for menthofuran. In the experimental model of castor oil-induced intestinal hypermotility, menthofuran (50 and 100 mg/kg) reduced the number of

Interspecies differences in reaction to a biodegradable subcutaneous tissue filler: severe inflammatory granulomatous reaction in the Sinclair minipig.

Soft tissue filler products have become very popular in recent years, with ever-increasing medical and aesthetic indications. While generally considered safe, the number of reported complications with tissue fillers is growing. Nevertheless, there is no specific animal model that is considered as the gold standard for assessing safety or efficacy of tissue fillers, and there are very little data on interspecies differences in reaction to these products. Here, we report on interspecies differences in reaction to a subcutaneous injectable co-polyester, composed of castor oil and citric acid. Com

Acetic acid-induced colitis in the rat: a reproducible experimental model for acute ulcerative colitis.

There exists no ideal model for experimental ulcerative colitis in common laboratory animals. Therefore, we tried in the present study to establish a reproducible model for inducing colitis in rats by using acetic acid. A blind loop of the colon including the cecum, ascending colon and part of the transverse colon, was brought out through two colostomies. After mechanical washing with warm normal saline, acetic acid was instilled at different doses (4, 6 and 8%) for different exposure times (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 s). The excluded colon was examined by light microscopy on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

Effects of excipients on the interactions of self-emulsifying drug delivery systems with human blood plasma and plasma membranes.

Due to its versatility in formulation and manufacturing, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) can be used to design parenteral formulations. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the effects of excipients on the behavior of SEDDS formulations upon parenteral administration, particularly their interactions with blood plasma and cell membranes. In this study, we prepared three neutrally charged SEDDS formulations composed of medium-chain triglycerides as the oil phase, polyoxyl-35 castor oil (EL35) and polyethylene glycol (15)-hydroxystearate (HS15) as the nonionic surfactants, medi

Oil-based versus water-based contrast media for hysterosalpingography in infertile women of advanced age, with ovulation disorders or a high risk for tubal pathology: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial (H2Oil2 study).

BACKGROUND: In women with unexplained infertility, tubal flushing with oil-based contrast during hysterosalpingography (HSG) increases ongoing pregnancy and subsequent live birth rates when compared to tubal flushing with water-based contrast. It is currently unclear whether an HSG with oil-based contrast also results in more ongoing pregnancies and live births in women of advanced age, women with ovulation disorders, and women with potential tubal pathology when compared to an HSG with water-based contrast. METHODS: We plan an international, multicentre, open-label, randomized controlled tri

Porous bioactive scaffold of aliphatic polyurethane and hydroxyapatite for tissue regeneration.

In this study, a new hydroxyapatite (HA)/polyurethane (PU) composite porous scaffold was developed by in situ polymerization. Aliphatic isophorone diisocyanate as a nontoxic and safe agent was adopted to produce the rigid segment in polyurethane polymerization. Hydroxyapatite powder was compounded in a PU polymer matrix during the polymeric process. The macrostructure and morphology as well as mechanical strength of the scaffolds were characterized by FTIR, XRD, DSC and SEM. The results show that the isophorone diisocyanate can react mildly with hydroxyl (-OH) groups of castor oil and a mild f
