Auditory cognition lab: a music therapy and speech-language pathology co-treatment for military-connected populations with auditory and cognitive impairment.

Military personnel are particularly at risk for auditory processing difficulties as their training, occupational, and combat experiences increase the likelihood of long-term damage to the auditory system as well as negatively impact physical, psychological, cognitive, and sensory functioning. This article introduces a music therapy and speech-language pathology co-treatment program, Auditory Cognition Lab (ACL), that treats auditory and cognitive deficits in military-connected populations (service members, veterans) with traumatic brain injury (TBI). ACL addresses auditory discrimination, temp

Time Perspective, Working Memory, and Depression in Non-Clinical Samples: Is There a Link?

Non-clinical depression is a major issue on college campuses, with some surveys estimating that 30% of college students have experienced a major depressive episode. One theoretical framework of depression is Zimbardo and Boyd (1999) time perspective model, which posits that our perspectives on time impact different aspects of life including our emotions, judgments, and decision making. The current study seeks to determine the role of this time perspectives model and a range of cognitive constructs including hope, rumination, and working memory on their influence in depression. Currently enroll

Generative AI and intelligent tutoring systems in nursing education: A systematic review of impacts on higher-order thinking skills and clinical competency.

AIMS: This review synthesizes the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on nursing students' clinical competency, Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and educational outcomes to differentiate between procedural efficiency and deep cognitive retention. BACKGROUND: Generative AI and Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) offer personalized scaffolding. However, their comparative efficacy against conventional pedagogical approaches, such as face-to-face lectures and standard non-AI simulations, remains controversial, particularly regarding the potential trade-off between skill acquisition and cogni

The cognitive engine of evaluative threat: socially prescribed perfectionism and Music Performance Anxiety-a moderated mediation analysis of rumination and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Socially Prescribed Perfectionism (SP) is a robust risk factor for Music Performance Anxiety (MPA), yet the underlying cognitive and regulatory mechanisms remain inadequately understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to delineate these pathways by constructing a moderated mediation model, examining rumination as a cognitive mediator and Self-Compassion (SC) as a multi-stage moderator. METHODS: Data were collected from 606 university music students. Analyses were conducted using Hayes' PROCESS macro (Model 59) to test the moderated mediation, controlling for academic grade and perfo

Adapting the ECLECTIC framework for intellectual disability assessment: an ethical and cross-cultural approach.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) clinicians increasingly conduct cognitive assessments with culturally and linguistically diverse children and young people, often using tools and diagnostic pathways developed within narrow cultural, linguistic, and educational contexts. In intellectual disability (ID) assessment, this can generate interpretive and ethical uncertainty, particularly when differences in language exposure, schooling histories, migration experiences, and interpreter-mediated assessment complicate the interpretation of standardized cognitive scores. This study exa

Gambling, motor cautiousness, and choice impulsivity: An experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is currently more commonly regarded as multifaceted, comprising both motor and cognitive subdomains. However, it is less clear how distinct these subdomains are, and the extent to which they interact and draw upon the same psychological resources. METHODS: The present experiment comprised 70 regular (non-problem) gamblers, and investigated the potential to induce impulsivity transfer effects within an electronic gambling context. Original and existing harm-minimization approaches were tested for their efficacy in inducing motor cautiousness during an electronic slot ma

The influence of lifetime depression on self-reported memory and cognitive problems: results from the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication.

The current study investigated the association between lifetime major depressive disorder (MDD) and self-reported memory and cognitive problems in a general population sample. The study was based on data from the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (n = 5692). The relationship between lifetime MDD and self-reported memory and cognitive problems was examined while controlling for other 1-year and lifetime psychiatric disorders. We found a lifetime history of depression, but no other lifetime psychiatric disorder, to be associated with self-reported memory and cognitive problems. We review t

Are mindful people less aggressive? The role of emotion regulation in the relations between mindfulness and aggression.

Inducing mindfulness has shown a promising effect on reducing aggression in both clinical and nonclinical populations, possibly because mindfulness can improve emotion regulation. The present study examined the association between mindfulness and aggression through potential mediating effects of several emotion regulation strategies. University and community samples of U.S. adults completed questionnaires on mindfulness, emotion regulation strategies, and trait aggression. Results indicate that mindfulness was associated with rumination and expressive suppression, which mediated the mindfulnes

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Rumination, Distraction, and Depressed Mood in Adolescence.

Rumination is an established cognitive vulnerability for depression. Despite substantial work on the environmental origins of rumination, the heritability of rumination has not been examined and it is not known whether rumination accounts for some of the genetic vulnerability associated with depression. 756 adolescent twins ages 12-14 years completed the Response Styles Questionnaire and multiple measures of depressive symptoms. Brooding correlated positively and distraction correlated negatively with concurrent depressive symptoms. Estimated heritabilites were 54% for depression, 21% for broo

A Psychoanalytically Informed Pilot Study of Moral Competence in German Young Adults Linked to Personality Structure and Parenting Experiences.

The present pilot study explored associations between moral competence, personality structure and perceived parenting experiences. While previous research on moral competence has mainly emphasized educational and cognitive determinants, this work represents a novel psychoanalytically informed investigation of this ability. A sample of 88 young adults aged 18 to 21 completed an online survey including the Moral Competence-Test, OPD-Structure-Questionnaire, and Zurich Brief Questionnaire for the Assessment of Parental Behaviors. Exploratory analyses revealed a positive association between moral

Gazing rituals in body dysmorphic disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gazing rituals and selective attention to perceived flaws during gazing are considered as maintaining factors in cognitive-behavioral models for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). This study investigated different durations of BDD-like gazing at different facial stimuli (an unfamiliar face, the participant's own face, and the participant's own reflection in the mirror) with regard to effects on dissociation, attractiveness evaluations and perceptual uncertainty. The aim of this study was to examine the hypothesized causal effects of gazing rituals on appearance preoccup

Cognitive representation of orientation: a case study.

Although object orientation in the human brain has been discussed extensively in the literature, the nature of the underlying cognitive representation(s) remains uncertain. We investigated orientation perception in BC, a patient with bilateral occipital and parietal damage from a herpes encephalitis infection. Our results show that in addition to general inaccuracy in discriminating and reproducing line orientations, her errors take the form of left-right mirror reflections across a vertical coordinate axis. We propose that in BC, the cognitive impairment is in failing to represent the directi

Cognitive Complaints in Schizophrenia: A Meta-Analysis of Studies Using the Subjective Scale to Investigate Cognition in Schizophrenia (SSTICS): Les plaintes cognitives dans la schizophrénie : Une méta-analyse des études utilisant la Subjective Scale To Investigate Cognition in Schizophrenia (SSTICS).

Background: Subjective cognitive complaints, or neurocognitive insight, reflect to patients' awareness of cognitive functioning. In schizophrenia, these complaints show inconsistent links with objective cognition, psychiatric symptoms, and illness insight. The Subjective Scale to Investigate Cognition in Schizophrenia (SSTICS), a validated self-report tool developed in Canada and used internationally, enables a homogeneous synthesis. Objective: This meta-analysis examined whether subjective complaints measured with the SSTICS are associated with objective cognition, psychiatric symptoms, and i

Cognitive insight in adults with posttraumatic stress disorder and childhood maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive insight includes the assessment of experiences and beliefs, review of misinterpretations, and awareness of more helpful alternate conclusions. Although there are suggestions that cognitive insight may play a role in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this relationship has not been directly investigated. Childhood maltreatment exposure may influence cognitive insight and be a pathway to impaired cognitive insight in PTSD. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate cognitive insight in PTSD and childhood maltreatment exposure. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This was a case-contr

Clinical dissociation and electromyographic convergence of paratonia in cognitive impairment including Alzheimer's disease: Evidence for a shared central inhibitory mechanism.

BackgroundDespite a shared conceptual framework linking both components to impaired inhibitory control, clinical evidence suggests that facilitatory and oppositional paratonia are not equally related to cognitive deterioration, with facilitatory paratonia showing a stronger association with cognitive impairment. Whether this apparent divergence reflects true neurophysiological differences or arises from limitations intrinsic to clinical assessment remains unclear. Electromyography (EMG)-based assessment offers a direct approach to quantify involuntary muscle activation and reduce measurement-r

Human factors and team safety in robotic-assisted surgery: a narrative review of ergonomic risks and educational implications.

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted surgery (RAS) has revolutionized minimally invasive surgery through enhanced dexterity, precision, and three-dimensional visualization. However, as surgeons become physically separated from the operative field, new risks emerge, including staff injuries, arm collisions, communication failures, and diminished situational awareness. This review aimed to synthesize current evidence on ergonomic, cognitive, and non-technical factors influencing staff safety in RAS. METHODS: A narrative review synthesized English-language studies published until 2025 on staff safety, arm

Early-phase amyloid PET reproduces metabolic signatures of cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Recent work suggests that amyloid beta (Aβ) positron emission tomography (PET) tracer uptake shortly after injection ("early phase") reflects brain metabolism and perfusion. We assessed this modality in a predominantly amyloid-negative neurodegenerative condition, Parkinson's disease (PD), and hypothesized that early-phase 18F-florbetaben (eFBB) uptake would reproduce characteristic hypometabolism and hypoperfusion patterns associated with cognitive decline in PD. METHODS: One hundred fifteen PD patients across the spectrum of cognitive impairment underwent dual-phase Aβ PET, st

It takes a village: Supporting professional identity formation in Canadian pharmacy schools' curricula.

PURPOSE: Canadian accreditation standards require pharmacy curricula to support professional identity formation (PIF)-the transformative process of becoming a pharmacist. A thorough understanding of pharmacy schools' approaches to teaching PIF is not well understood, and guidance for educators for curricular development is limited. Study objectives were to describe current PIF teaching and learning approaches, and to outline future plans to incorporate PIF into Canadian pharmacy curricula. METHODS: From May to September 2024, online, semi-structured focus groups were conducted with 51 faculty

Effects of inquiry-based learning on hierarchical cognitive outcomes in tea cultural heritage education: a quasi-experimental study.

Understanding how instructional design shapes differentiated cognitive outcomes remains a central question in educational psychology, particularly in culturally grounded learning contexts where heritage knowledge must be retained, interpreted, and applied. Existing research on inquiry-based learning (IBL) in heritage education has relied largely on qualitative or non-comparative designs, and heritage cognition has typically been assessed through aggregate measures that may obscure important variation across cognitive levels. This study addresses these gaps by examining whether IBL produces dif
