CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: Community-acquired pressure injuries (CAPrI) are a common and costly complication of spinal cord injury (SCI). Most studies and interventions focus on the prevention of pressure injuries acquired in the hospital. The goal of this study is to better understand SCI provider perspectives of the risks, actions and resources needed to prevent CAPrIs.
DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive, semi-structured interviews of SCI providers analyzed using a deductive-inductive approach.
SETTING: Three geographically different veteran health administration spinal cord injury/disorder centers.

Low-income populations have an elevated risk of obesity and associated chronic diseases. Environmental factors influence health behaviors that contribute to obesity. Although low-income neighborhoods may pose barriers to healthy behaviors, they may also have health-promoting environmental features (e.g., produce stands, walking trails). Thus, a potentially effective intervention strategy is to help individuals identify and overcome neighborhood barriers by making use of community resources that support a healthy diet and physical activity. The authors describe the formative research process un

Standard approaches to teaching the management of psychosocial issues in pediatrics--visits to community-based organizations and stand-alone block rotations in developmental-behavioral pediatrics and community pediatrics--neither expose residents to models of interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty preceptors and community providers nor take advantage of the efficacy of learning in continuity clinics. The authors describe their project, developed from an existing Community Pediatrics Training Initiative with long-standing relationships with a domestic violence shelter, a community cent

The October 7, 2023, attack and ensuing Iron Swords War exposed Israeli society to severe and prolonged collective stress. This study examined differences between Jewish and Arab citizens in terms of exposure to war-related events, hope, family quality of life, and community and national resilience, as well as psychological distress. Guided by the ecological theory, we aimed to explore (a) group differences in coping resources and distress, (b) associations among resilience and distress variables, and (c) the extent to which multilevel sociodemographics and coping resources explain psychologic

From 2000-2005, Somerville, MA, experienced a number of youth overdoses and suicides. The community response followed CDC recommendations for contagion containment. A community coalition, Somerville Cares About Prevention, became a pivotal convener of community partners and a local research organization, the Institute for Community Health, provided needed expertise in surveillance and analysis. Mayoral leadership provided the impetus for action while community activists connected those at risk with mental health resources. Using a variety of data sources (including death certificates, youth ri

BACKGROUND: Sedative-hypnotic drugs are often initiated in hospital to manage insomnia and anxiety. Guidelines discourage their use, particularly in older adults, due to risks of falls, fractures, and delirium.
AIM: To identify publicly available resources to decrease the use of sedative-hypnotic drugs and promote sleep in hospital.
METHOD: An advanced Google search with 6 search strategies was conducted. Key websites were also identified and searched. Hospital- or community-based resources using non-pharmacologic measures to reduce sedative-hypnotic drug use and/or to promote sleep were inc

Children and adolescents with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities and complex medical problems require safe and comprehensive care to meet their medical and psychosocial needs. Ideally, such children and youth should be cared for by their families in their home environments. When this type of arrangement is not possible, there should be exploration of appropriate, alternative noncongregate community-based settings, especially alternative family homes. Government funding sources exist to support care in the community, although there is variability among states with regard to

While resources available to public health entities increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to focus mitigation efforts on Delaware's most vulnerable citizens was evident. The higher risk of community-spread and complications resulting from COVID-19 associated with individuals residing in congregate settings such as homeless shelters and encampments prompted the Delaware Division of Public Health to leverage existing and new resources to provide technical assistance, education and to build valuable partnerships with community-based homeless service providers to reduce the public healt

This paper presents the theory, rationale, and a working model for integrating professional resources at the time of a disaster. Red Cross and community mental health agencies have worked for too long in parallel. A collaborative approach to meeting the emotional needs of disaster victims makes optimal use of indigenous resources; provides skill and knowledge normally lacking in each agency alone; and helps provide, through early intervention, a preventive factor to thwart long term community distress. Options for maintenance of readiness, local or regional adaptation and piloting are also dis

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are a measure of childhood toxic stress that have a dose-dependent relationship with many adult health outcomes. While ACEs have been validated across diverse populations to measure neglect, abuse, and family dysfunction, they do not specifically assess trauma related to racism/xenophobia and immigration. 54% of Latinx youth in the United States are immigrants or children of immigrants and a large group with potentially unmeasured trauma. This study looks beyond ACEs to identify adverse and protective factors for healthy development among Latinx

BACKGROUND: Addressing mental health disparities following COVID-19 requires adaptive, multi-sectoral, equity-focused, and community-based approaches. Mental health task-sharing in gateway settings has been found to address mental health care gaps in low- and middle-income countries, but is not a common practice in the U.S., especially in non-medical settings, such as low-income housing developments (LIH). This research study will evaluate the effectiveness of a multisectoral community-engaged collaborative for task-sharing mental health care on consumer, provider, and implementation outcomes,

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, olderadult-focused community organizations played an essential role in supporting the wellbeing of older adults. Supporting older adults during this time required extensive modifications to existing programming but their adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic are not well documented. The purpose of this study was to understand how older adult-focused community organizations adopted virtual delivery formats during the COVID-19 pandemic and their perspectives of the barriers and facilitators for organizations and older adults.

The fields of bioimaging and image analysis are rapidly expanding as new technologies transform biological questions into novel insights. While professionals of varying expertise are essential to achieving these advancements, early-career scientists-a prominent user group within the imaging community-are often assumed to have the prerequisite knowledge and ability to use these tools. This demographic, consisting of students, post-docs, and bioimage analysis trainees, is critical for the field to continue to evolve and flourish. However, obstacles such as geographic location, language barriers,

BACKGROUND: Resilience has been established as a protective factor against mental health challenges (e.g., anxiety, depression). From an intersectional perspective, the stressors experienced by Black women living in rural communities are likely to have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to identify the challenges and stressors experienced and the resilience resources available to and relied upon by rural, Black women, during the pandemic.
METHODS: Individual, in-depth, structured interviews (n = 24) were conducted among Black women living in rural South Carolina, r

OBJECTIVE: Although there is emerging evidence for the effectiveness of group interventions for the mental health of war and torture-affected populations, there has been limited investigation into the social and interpersonal benefits that may be particular to group therapies.
METHOD: Informed by interpersonal group theory and the concept of social resources, we conducted 31 interviews with Syrian men and women exposed to torture and exiled as refugees in Jordan to examine perceived changes in social resources and underlying mechanisms following participation in a 10-week group psychotherapy

In July 2009, the city of Fukuoka, Japan experienced a flood disaster along the Hii River, which runs through densely populated, concrete-covered areas of the city. The drainage system was overwhelmed and the river overflowed due to heavy rainfall and rapid runoff. The event led citizens in its watershed to plan and implement comprehensive flood control. The plan aims not only to mitigate floods but also to revitalize the river environment and populated communities in urban areas. This study reports the activities led by the citizens. They organized and carried out civic forums, workshops, and

Despite Alzheimer disease and related dementias/disorders (ADRD) being a substantial public health concern, the Deaf community remains underrepresented in ADRD research. We examined the extent and nature of existing literature on ADRD in the Deaf community. We conducted a scoping review following Arksey and O'Malley's framework, adhering to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses. We searched 7 databases for peer-reviewed studies published in English, with no restrictions on publication date or study design. Inclusion studies addressed ADRD with
