Thermostable Bacterial Esterases From Lipase Family 1.5 Degrade Compostable Polyesters PBAT and PBSA.

The escalating plastics crisis, exacerbated by the accumulation of nonbiodegradable polyesters in the environment, has necessitated the exploration of sustainable waste management solutions such as enzymatic hydrolysis in industrial recycling. So far, the focus of these efforts has been on cutinase-related polyethylene terephthalate (PET) degrading carboxylesterases, or PETases. In this work, we report the discovery and initial activity screen of previously uncharacterized, thermostable enzymes with polyesterase activity through comprehensive phylogenetic and sequence analysis of a bacterial f

Attapulgite-modified organic compost effectively reduces soil nutrient loss and enhances microbial interactions.

Improving the utilization of agricultural biological waste resources is a critical issue. This study initially assessed the effects of adding attapulgite to vegetable compost. Additionally, the study investigated the effects of attapulgite-modified compost on soil nutrient release and microbial community changes through nutrient loss experiments. Results indicated that adding attapulgite increased compost humification, significantly promoted humic acid synthesis, and improved the aromaticity and structural stability of humus. Attapulgite-modified organic fertilizer effectively retains soil nut

PFAS profiles in biosolids, composts, and chemical fertilizers intended for agricultural land application in Quebec (Canada).

Biosolids, sewage sludge, and composts are applied to agricultural land for nutrient recovery and soil organic matter replenishment, aligning with sustainable development goals. However, they may contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that can enter the food chain through plant bioaccumulation and leaching into the groundwater. This study analyzed 80 PFAS compounds in sewage sludge, biosolids, commercial composts, and chemical fertilizers in Quebec, Canada, using UHPLC-HRMS (Orbitrap Q-Exactive). PFAS concentrations ranged from 18 to 59 µg/kg in commercial composts, 9.8 to 213 µg/k

Co-composting of sewage sludge as an effective technology for the production of substrates with reduced content of pharmaceutical residues.

Sewage sludge is a valuable source of elements such as phosphorus and nitrogen. At the same time, heavy metals, emerging organic compounds, micropollutants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, PCPs, microplastics), or some potentially dangerous bacteria can be present. In this study, the sewage sludge was aerobically treated by composting with other materials (co-composted), and the resulting substrate was tested for suitability of its use in agriculture. Closer attention was focused on the pharmaceuticals (non-steroidal antiphlogistics, sartanes, antiepileptics, caffeine, and nicotine metabolites) c

Effect of composting and storage on the microbiome and resistome of cattle manure from a commercial dairy farm in Poland.

Manure from food-producing animals, rich in antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), poses significant environmental and healthcare risks. Despite global efforts, most manure is not adequately processed before use on fields, escalating the spread of antimicrobial resistance. This study examined how different cattle manure treatments, including composting and storage, affect its microbiome and resistome. The changes occurring in the microbiome and resistome of the treated manure samples were compared with those of raw samples by high-throughput qPCR for ARGs trackin

Assessing Physiochemical Characteristics of Agricultural Waste and Ready Compost at Wadi Al-Far'a Watershed of Palestine.

The Wadi Al-Far'a Watershed (WFW) is one of the most important agricultural lands in Palestine where considerable amounts of organic wastes are generated. Yet, mismanagement of agricultural waste, including random disposal and/or burning, is a prevalent practice in the WFW. Such a practice might result in greenhouse gas emissions and leachate penetration into underlying soil and groundwater. To encourage compost production in the WFW as an efficient way for organic agricultural waste treatment and emission reduction, this study aims at evaluating the quality of both raw organic agricultural wa

Swine-manure composts induce the enrichment of antibiotic-resistant bacteria but not antibiotic resistance genes in soils.

Composting is a common and effective strategy for reducing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) from animal manure. However, it is unclear whether the advantages of composting for the control of ARGs and ARB can be further increased in land application. This study investigated the fate of ARB and ARGs after land application of swine-manure composts (SMCs) to three different soil types (red soil, loess and black soil). The results showed that although the SMCs caused an increase in the abundance of total ARGs in the soil in the short period, they significan

Effects of Composted Agricultural Organic Materials on Mercury Methylation in Paddy Soil and Mercury Enrichment in Rice.

Many studies have shown that returning fresh straw to the field can promote mercury accumulation in crops; therefore, it is necessary to find an appropriate way to use agricultural organic materials in mercury-contaminated farmlands. In this study, pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of composted agricultural organic materials on mercury bioaccumulation in the paddy field ecosystem by adding fresh rice straw (RS), composted rice straw (CRS), cow dung (CD) and composted cow dung (CCD) to the soils. Compared with RS and CD, the CRS and CCD amendments reduced dissolved organic mat

Antiflammatory activity and potential dermatological applications of characterized humic acids from a lignite and a green compost.

Long-term exposure to air pollution has been associated with the development of some inflammatory processes related to skin. The goal of modern medicine is the development of new products with antiflammatory action deriving from natural sources to improve environmental and economic sustainability. In this study, two different humic acids (HA) were isolated from from lignite (HA-LIG) and composted artichoke wastes (HA-CYN) and characterized by infrared spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, thermochemolysis-GC/MS, and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC), while their antiflammatory a

Performance and neural modeling of a compost-based biofilter treating a gas-phase mixture of benzene and xylene.

Biofilter (BF) has been regarded as a versatile gas treatment technology for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from contaminated gas streams. In order for BF to be utilized in the industrial setting, it is essential to conduct research aimed at removing VOC mixtures under different inlet loading conditions, i.e. as a function of the gas flow rate and inlet VOC concentrations. The main aim of this study was to apply artificial neural networks (ANN) and determine the relationship between flow rate (FR), pressure drop (PD), inlet concentration (C), and removal efficiency (RE) in the BF t

Grape pomace compost harbors organohalide-respiring Dehalogenimonas species with novel reductive dehalogenase genes.

Organohalide-respiring bacteria have key roles in the natural chlorine cycle; however, most of the current knowledge is based on cultures from contaminated environments. We demonstrate that grape pomace compost without prior exposure to chlorinated solvents harbors a Dehalogenimonas (Dhgm) species capable of using chlorinated ethenes, including the human carcinogen and common groundwater pollutant vinyl chloride (VC) as electron acceptors. Grape pomace microcosms and derived solid-free enrichment cultures were able to dechlorinate trichloroethene (TCE) to less chlorinated daughter products inc

Conjunctive and mineralization impact of municipal solid waste compost and inorganic fertilizer on lysimeter and pot studies.

Objectives of the present study were to investigate the physico-chemical properties of municipal solid waste (MSW)-enriched compost and its effect on nutrient mineralization and subsequent plant growth. The enrichment of MSW compost by inorganic salts enhanced the humification rate and reduced the carbon nitrogen (C/N) ratio in less time than control compost. The chemical properties of compost, C/N ratio, humic acid, fulvic acid, degree of polymerization and humification index revealed the significant correlation amid properties. A laboratory-scale experiment evaluated the conjunctive effect o

Residues and potential ecological risks of veterinary antibiotics in manures and composts associated with protected vegetable farming.

Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) are emerging contaminants and enter into soil principally by agricultural application of organic fertilizer. A total of 33 solid animal manures and 17 compost samples from protected vegetable farms in nine areas of China were analyzed for the antibiotic classes of tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and macrolides (17 substances in total). Oxytetracycline was found as a dominant compound in the samples, and its highest concentration reached 416.8 mg kg(-1) in a chicken manure sample from Shouguang, Shandong Province. Among the samples, animal manures (es

Ruminant versus non-ruminant manure composting: carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and associated physicochemical traits impact divergent pollutant emissions.

Composting can convert livestock manure into valuable fertilizer, but the relationships between manure type, which essentially reflects differences in carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) and other associated physical properties, and pollutant gas emissions remain poorly quantified. We monitored temperature, pH, carbon, nitrogen, sulphur contents, bacterial succession, and emissions of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) during aerobic composting of non-ruminant manure (chicken and pig) and ruminant manure (sheep and cattle). Sheep and cattle manure (characte

Composting Restructures Chicken Manure Viral Communities and Attenuates Virus-Associated Antibiotic Resistance Signals: Paired Metagenome and Virome Analyses.

Composting is widely used to reduce biological risks during manure recycling, but changes in viral communities and virus-associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remain poorly resolved. This study aimed to assess changes in DNA viral communities, eukaryotic viral protein signals, virus-associated ARGs, and predicted virus-host linkages during chicken manure composting using paired analyses of total-community metagenomes and viral-particle-enriched viromes. Both approaches recovered viral assemblages dominated by Uroviricota and lytic viruses but produced distinct profiles. Viromes yielded

Unveiling nitrogen and sulfur cycling mechanisms of odor reduction in kitchen waste composting driven by exogenous bacterial consortia.

Odor emissions, primarily ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) restrict the application of kitchen waste (KW) composting. Microbial inoculation is a promising strategy, yet mechanisms underlying odor mitigation remain unclear. KW composting with and without an immobilized bacterial consortium (IBC) was compared by monitoring physicochemical conditions, odor emissions, and microbial and functional profiles. IBC extended the thermophilic phase, improved composting efficiency, and reduced cumulative H2S (-44 %) and NH3 (-18 %). IBC reshaped bacterial, fungal and archaeal communities and stren

Process-Aware Deep Learning for Low-Cost Greenhouse Gas Sensing: Insights from Composting toward Scalable Anthropogenic Activities Applications.

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) monitoring is essential for mitigating emissions from anthropogenic activities, yet the deployment of high-precision analyzers remains constrained by cost and operational complexity. Low-cost GHGs sensors often suffer from signal drift, cross-sensitivity, and unstable responses under extreme temperature and humidity conditions. To address these challenges, GHGsNet was developed as a low-cost, process-aware deep learning framework for predicting CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions during composting, a representative high temperature and high humidity anthropogenic activity. GHGs
