Comprehensive Drug-Class Review Framework for improved evidence-based drug policy and formulary modernization.

Formularies are used by payers to optimize access and ensure the appropriate use of medications. Lack of follow-up and re-evaluation can lead to outdated formularies that are not reflective of current evidence. Formulary modernization, an approach to re-align formularies with current evidence has proven successful. The Ontario Drug Policy Research Network (ODPRN) launched a framework for conducting comprehensive drug-class reviews. This commentary describes the individual components of this framework and lessons learned through completion of 12 reviews between 2013 and 2016. We present the ODP

Three ways of knowing: the integration of clinical expertise, evidence-based medicine, and artificial intelligence in assisted reproductive technologies.

Decision-making in fertility care is on the cusp of a significant frameshift. Online tools to integrate artificial intelligence into the decision-making process across all aspects of ART are rapidly emerging. These tools have the potential to improve outcomes and transition decision-making from one based on traditional provider centric assessments toward a hybrid triad of expertise, evidence, and algorithmic data analytics using AI. We can look forward to a time when AI will be the third part of a provider's tool box to complement expertise and medical literature to enable ever more accurate p

The Sickle Africa Data Coordinating Centre (SADaCC): a data science hub for interdisciplinary sickle cell disease research and training.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the most prevalent monogenic disorders worldwide, with the highest burden in Africa, where ~75% of the 7.74 million global cases occur. Scientific progress in understanding its epidemiology, clinical heterogeneity, and treatment outcomes has been constrained by heterogeneous, non-standardized, and non-interoperable datasets that limit data integration and cross-country analyses. To address this, the Sickle Africa Data Coordinating Centre (SADaCC) was established as the data science hub of the SickleInAfrica consortium to support the development and expansion

Exploring patterns in resource utilization prior to the formal identification of homelessness in recently returned veterans.

There are limited data on resources utilized by US Veterans prior to their identification as being homeless. We performed visual analytics on longitudinal medical encounter data prior to the official recognition of homelessness in a large cohort of OEF/OIF Veterans. A statistically significant increase in numbers of several categories of visits in the immediate 30 days prior to the recognition of homelessness was noted as compared to an earlier period. This finding has the potential to inform prediction algorithms based on structured data with a view to intervention and mitigation of homelessn

Performance evaluation of a machine learning-based methodology using dynamical features to detect nonwear intervals in actigraphy data in a free-living setting.

GOAL AND AIMS: One challenge using wearable sensors is nonwear time. Without a nonwear (e.g., capacitive) sensor, actigraphy data quality can be biased by subjective determinations confounding sleep/wake classification. We developed and evaluated a machine learning algorithm supplemented by dynamic features to discern wear/nonwear episodes. FOCUS TECHNOLOGY: Actigraphy data from wrist actigraph (Spectrum, Philips-Respironics). REFERENCE TECHNOLOGY: The built-in nonwear sensor as "ground truth" to classify nonwear periods using other data, mimicking features of Actiwatch 2. SAMPLE: Data were

Technical challenges related to implementation of a formula one real time data acquisition and analysis system in a paediatric intensive care unit.

Most existing, expert monitoring systems do not provide the real time continuous analysis of the monitored physiological data that is necessary to detect transient or combined vital sign indicators nor do they provide long term storage of the data for retrospective analyses. In this paper we examine the feasibility of implementing a long term data storage system which has the ability to incorporate real-time data analytics, the system design, report the main technical issues encountered, the solutions implemented and the statistics of the data recorded. GenoSets: visual analytic methods for comparative genomics.

Many important questions in biology are, fundamentally, comparative, and this extends to our analysis of a growing number of sequenced genomes. Existing genomic analysis tools are often organized around literal views of genomes as linear strings. Even when information is highly condensed, these views grow cumbersome as larger numbers of genomes are added. Data aggregation and summarization methods from the field of visual analytics can provide abstracted comparative views, suitable for sifting large multi-genome datasets to identify critical similarities and differences. We introduce a softwar

Machine Learning Approaches Using High-Throughput Profiling Data for Antibiotic Discovery.

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections continue to increase globally, creating an urgent need for new antibacterials with novel mechanisms of action. Early stages of antibiotic discovery are often limited by the difficulty of identifying compounds that act through previously unrecognized pathways and by challenges in determining their mechanisms. Machine learning (ML) integrated with high-throughput profiling now provides systematic approaches to overcome these barriers. Beyond initial hit discovery, multilayer profiling using morphological phenotyping, transposon sequencing, transcriptomic
