The prosthodontic management of the child with ectodermal dysplasia is made difficult because of the under-development of the alveolar ridges. This paper describes a case where tricalcium phosphate was placed in sockets immediately following the extraction of the primary incisor teeth to help maintain alveolar bone width, offering a valuable alternative treatment option in the prosthodontic management of the child patient with ectodermal dysplasia.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of insert changes for combined maxillary and mandibular implant overdentures (IODs) using the Locator Legacy system and to assess the survival of dental implants with IODs.

An implant-retained maxillofacial overdenture with a pharyngeal speech aid prosthesis was fabricated for a patient with a nonsurgically treated cleft palate who was unable to achieve velopharyngeal closure. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing were used to fabricate a metal-reinforced prosthesis using the Ivotion Denture System and subtractive manufacturing with geographic guides. Magnetic attachments were incorporated to improve the retention and stability of the prosthesis. Masticatory function, deglutition, and esthetics were found to be improved at the 6-month follow-up.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Implant-supported overdentures (IODs) are a treatment option for patients with complete edentulism. However, this treatment increases the possibilities of peri-implant complications, characterized by inflammation or partial loss of surrounding hard and soft tissues.

Carcinomas of the tongue constitute approximately 5% to 10% of oral carcinomas. Rehabilitation of these patients postsurgery is challenging because the motor control of the tongue is lost and postsurgical scarring reduces the vestibular depth needed to support and retain a denture. Implant-supported overdentures are a viable option to rehabilitate such patients. The restoration provides enhanced function and wearer comfort.

Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI), in which the teeth are discolored, translucent and brittle, can occur in isolation as a familial trait and as a component of the skeletal dysplasia Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). Mini dental implants (MDIs) are an affordable alternative for overdentures in medically compromised patients with reduced bone volume.
