People impacted by disasters may have adverse non-communicable disease health effects associated with the disaster. This research examined the independent and joint impacts of federally declared disasters on the diagnosis of hypertension (HTN), diabetes (DM), anxiety, and medication changes 6 months before and after a disaster. Patients seen in zip codes that received a federal disaster declaration for Hurricanes Gustave or Ike in 2008 and who had electronic health records captured by MarketScan® were analyzed. The analysis included patients seen 6 months before or after Hurricanes Gustav and

The need for high quality and timely disaster research has been a topic of great discussion over the past several years. Recent high profile incidents have exposed gaps in knowledge about the health impacts of disasters or the benefits of specific interventions-such was the case with the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill and recent events associated with lead-contaminated drinking water in Flint, Michigan, and the evolving health crisis related to Zika virus disease. Our inability to perform timely research to inform the community about health and safety risks or address specific concerns further heightens

This study explores the institutional, professional, and social responses to the gender-based violence that occurred in the wake of the 2021 volcanic eruption in La Palma, Spain. Using a qualitative methodology, it analyses the perspectives of 46 stakeholders-political decision-makers, technical staff, and social activists-acquired through in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that gender-based violence was initially overlooked during the crisis as emergency actions prioritised general safety and housing. The absence of gender-sensitive planning increased the vulnerability of women, particu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In April and May of 2024, the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil faced one of the most devastating natural disasters in its history. Torrential rains caused catastrophic flooding, affecting over 2.4 million people and damaging critical infrastructure. Among the most vulnerable were individuals with chronic kidney disease, particularly those dependent on dialysis or immunosuppressive therapy following kidney transplantation. This narrative report describes the impact of the floods on nephrology services, highlights systemic vulnerabilities, and outlines the respons

Failing to collaborate in crisis and emergency situations will increase the vulnerability of organisations and societies towards potential disasters. This paper highlights the significance of effective collaboration at different levels in times of crises. The case of snow storm 'Alexa', which hit Jordan in December 2013, was considered for the purpose of this research. The impact of Alexa raised many questions regarding the country's preparedness and the capacity of its infrastructure to maintain critical business functions across various industry sectors. First, should people individually tak

The disaster caused by the Tsunami of 26 December 2004 was one of the worst that medical systems have faced. The aim of this study was to learn about the medical response of the Thai hospitals to this disaster and to establish guidelines that will help hospitals prepare for future disasters. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Home Front Command (HFC) Medical Department sent a research delegation to Thai hospitals to study: (1) pre-event hospital preparedness; (2) patient evacuation and triage; (3) personnel and equipment reinforcement; (4) modes used for alarm and recruitment of hospital personn

Natural hazards amounting to disasters have almost become an endemic phenomenon during past decades throughout the globe, particularly affecting less resourced countries. The capabilities of the affected nations are stretched to the maximum in most of the disasters, thereby exposing deficiencies at various levels of the disaster mitigation mechanisms. A key factor identified through the human experience of all previous disaster scenarios is the requisite of effective and integrated local, national and regional disaster management mechanisms. The national and regional legal framework in this co

Eleven trade union leaders, many familiar with basic occupational safety and health, but many not significantly trained in the field, received two weeks of disaster response training. In zoom interviews they told of how their unions responded to such disasters as 9-11, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Hurricanes Sandy, Maria, and Harvey. Unions, as is their historical practice, helped individuals, workplaces, and communities with resilience, but all participants said there needed to be much better at pre-disaster planning, training, and hard work to be able to respond adequately to future events.

PURPOSE: Guidance on alternate care site planning based on the experience of a health-system pharmacy department in preparing for an expected surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases is provided.
SUMMARY: In disaster response situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare institutions may be compelled to transition to a contingency care model in which staffing and supply levels are no longer consistent with daily practice norms and, while usual patient care practices are maintained, establishment of alternate care sites (eg, a convention center) may be necessitated by high pat

TOPIC: This paper applies cognitive developmental theory to explain how preschoolers, school-age children, and adolescents process and respond to disasters.
PURPOSE: To help clinicians understand the disaster experience from a child's point of view, recognize age-specific reactions, identify symptoms that may signal coping difficulties, and plan effective interventions.
SOURCES: Case examples from the author's work with flood victims illustrate typical reactions for children (preschool to adolescents) within a family context, along with developmentally appropriate interventions.

The efficient and timely management of human evacuation during emergency events is an important area of research where the Internet of Things (IoT) can be of great value. Significant areas of application for optimum evacuation strategies include buildings, sports arenas, cultural venues, such as museums and concert halls, and ships that carry passengers, such as cruise ships. In many cases, the evacuation process is complicated by constraints on space and movement, such as corridors, staircases, and passageways, that can cause congestion and slow the evacuation process. In such circumstances,

This paper explores the importance of adopting a broader perspective and applying lessons learned from response and recovery efforts to establish a more adaptive incident command system (ICS) approach to recovery and resilience. The National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) has been used since its introduction in 2004 to a consistent nationwide framework and approach to enable government at all levels (federal, state, tribal, local), the private sector and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to work together to prepare for, prevent, respond to, recover from and mitigate the effects of inci
