BACKGROUND: Post-procedural ecchymosis can last up to two weeks and diminish patient satisfaction. Laser-assisted clearance is documented with pulsed-dye devices, but data on 1064-nm picosecond/nanosecond platforms remain sparse.

Acute infantile haemorrhagic oedema (AIHO) is characterised by purpura, ecchymosis and inflammatory oedema of the face and extremities. It is seen in children aged 4-24 months. The atiology is not known. We report a case of AIHO diagnosed by skin biopsy demonstrating leukocyte-elastic vasculitis. Laboratory studies showed positive hepatitis A IgM and IgG antibodies. The liver function tests were normal, indicating subclinical hepatitis. Cryoglobulinaemia was detected, suggesting that the disease was related to hepatitis A.

A 13-yr-old victim of a prolonged eastern garter snake (Thamnophis s. sirtalis) bite was hospitalized following development of coolness, edema and ecchymosis of the bitten hand. Although lymphatic involvement was noted, vital signs and laboratory tests were normal and rapid recovery followed. Subsequent asymptomatic Thamnophis bites of the subject indicate that these clinical changes were not allergic. This case from Delaware suggests that widespread toxicity within the genus is likely.

Excellent clinical results were obtained in 85 patients with chronic asthma who took corticosteroids (mostly triamcinolone) on a long-term basis for periods varying from one to 26 years. There was a minimum of side-effects, none serious; the most discomforting were ecchymosis and a tendency to easy bruising. The results of this and previous studies have convinced the author that corticosteroids, if judiciously used, are the most valuable adjunct we have in the treatment of acute and chronic asthma.

Splenic hematoma is an exceptionally rare event in newborn period that usually occurs in concomitant birth trauma and bleeding disorder. This report presents a newborn case with severe hemophilia A, who had a splenic hematoma presented on the second day of life with severe anemia, abdominal distention, abdominal and scrotal ecchymosis. The patient was successfully treated medically with factor VIII concentrates without splenectomy. Molecular analysis of the factor VIII gene revealed a hemizygous deletion in exon 13.

Hepatitis A is common in children and usually is a self-limiting disease. Although extrahepatic and hematological immune manifestations following acute hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection have rarely been reported, they are frequently observed in other viral hepatitis. In this paper, we report the case of a 3-year-old girl who developed immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and hemolytic anemia after HAV infection. She was presented with malaise, pallor, ecchymosis, petechiae and purpura on the trunk and extremities.

The acute scrotum generates a long list of differential diagnoses. An unusual etiology includes insect envenomation, which typically is an acute process with rapid onset of symptomatologies. Two patients with genital envenomation are reported. We review the reported cases at our institution with all types of bites and stings. Symptoms of pain and pruritus, and signs of ecchymosis and edema preceding exfoliating dermatitis were evident in both cases. Mild analgesics and antihistamines promoted resolution in each instance.

We report a rare case of isolated penile fracture in a prepubescent male caused by an accidental fall. The patient presented with swelling and ecchymosis on the base of the penis and along the penile shaft. A flexible cystoscopy was performed, which did not reveal any concomitant urethral injury. The penis was degloved and the corporal tear was closed with absorbable suture. Due to the location of the injury, ventral mobilization of the urethra was required. The pathophysiology of penile fracture as well as the diagnosis and management of this rare injury are discussed in this report.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Headache disorders are often accompanied by associated symptoms involving organ systems other than the central and peripheral nervous system, including the integumentary, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal system. However, skin changes or conditions are not commonly associated with headache disorders. Recognition of possible etiologies of headache in patients with bruising, rash, or neurocutaneous disorders can help guide workup and management. A 21-year-old Japanese man who was a professional bicycle motocross rider injured his perineum during a competition. Chief complaints were gross hematuria, perineal pain, and subcutaneous ecchymosis of the scrotum. Urethrocystography revealed a torn bulbar urethra and extravasation in the same region. Scrotal ultrasonography revealed small calcifications in the bilateral testes. Here, we report a case of bilateral testicular calcifications caused by the continuous shock and vibration of the saddle in an off-road bicycle rider.

Azacitidine is a hypomethylating agent used for the treatment of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency for the treatment of MDS and is also indicated for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Injection site erythema, ecchymosis, and petechiae are some of the common cutaneous adverse reactions associated with azacitidine. This article describes a rare adverse cutaneous drug reaction with azacitidine in the form of a reticular generalized skin rash in a 28-year-old female with AML.
