Smooth pursuit eye movements and phonological processing in adults with dyslexia.

The extent to which adults with dyslexia are characterized by concurrent smooth pursuit eye movement and phonological difficulties was investigated, as was the relationship between performance on these respective tasks and literacy skills. A total of 19 adults with dyslexia and 19 age- and IQ-matched controls undertook a comprehensive battery of psychometric, literacy, and phonological tests. Smooth pursuit initiation was measured quantitatively under both gap and nongap conditions. The results revealed that adults with dyslexia had longer smooth pursuit latencies; however, both groups showed

Latencies of stimulus-driven eye movements are shorter in dyslexic subjects.

Eye movements latencies toward peripherally presented stimuli were measured in 10-year-old dyslexic and control children. Dyslexic subjects, previously found to be oversensitive to stimulation of the magnocellular channel, showed reduced latencies as compared to normally reading controls. An attention shifting task was also used which showed no group differences in latencies of eye movements. The data are discussed in terms of the hypothesis of magnocellular system alteration and attention dysfunction in dyslexia. Additionally, sex differences in eye movement latencies were found and are discu

Eye movements of dyslexic children when reading in a regular orthography.

Participants were German dyslexic readers (13-year-olds) who-compared to English dyslexic readers-suffer mainly from slow laborious reading and less from reading errors. The eye movements of eleven dyslexic boys and age-matched controls were recorded during reading of text passages and pseudoword lists. For both text and pseudoword reading, the dyslexic readers exhibited more and much longer fixations, but relatively few regressions. Increased length of words and pseudowords led to a greater increase in number of fixations for dyslexic than normal readers. Comparisons across studies suggest th

Retinal ganglion cell synchronization by fixational eye movements improves feature estimation.

Image movements relative to the retina are essential for the visual perception of stationary objects during fixation. Here we have measured fixational eye and head movements of the turtle, and determined their effects on the activity of retinal ganglion cells by simulating the movements on the isolated retina. We show that ganglion cells respond mainly to components of periodic eye movement that have amplitudes of roughly the diameter of a photoreceptor. Drift or small head movements have little effect. Driven cells that are located along contrast borders are synchronized, which reliably signa

Parsing cognition in schizophrenia using saccadic eye movements: a selective overview.

Eye movements provide a behavioural measure of sensorimotor processing and higher cognitive functions of the brain. With the development of novel paradigms that can be used for the study of various cognitive operations, saccadic eye movements in particular, have become increasingly popular. Patients with schizophrenia have neurocognitive impairments that can be readily investigated with these paradigms. From animal, human lesion and neuroimaging studies, the cerebral centres underlying saccadic eye movements have been identified. The areas of the prefrontal cortex include the dorsolateral pref

Idiosyncratic characteristics of saccadic eye movements when viewing different visual environments.

Eye position was recorded in different viewing conditions to assess whether the temporal and spatial characteristics of saccadic eye movements in different individuals are idiosyncratic. Our aim was to determine the degree to which oculomotor control is based on endogenous factors. A total of 15 naive subjects viewed five visual environments: (1) The absence of visual stimulation (i.e. a dark room); (2) a repetitive visual environment (i.e. simple textured patterns); (3) a complex natural scene; (4) a visual search task; and (5) reading text. Although differences in visual environment had sign

Predictive smooth pursuit eye movements during identification of moving acuity targets.

Repetitive, brief target ramp movements every few seconds lead to anticipatory acceleration before each ramp onset and anticipatory deceleration before ramp offset. We assessed whether identifying novel changes in the pursuit target would alter this pattern of anticipatory pursuit. Without target identification (TI), anticipatory acceleration increased when intervals between ramps were regular, rather than random. It increased further when, between ramps, the target was invisible rather than stationary and visible. Anticipatory deceleration increased when the target was expected to stop rather

Quantitative measurements of eye movements in a patient with Tullio phenomenon.

The Tullio phenomenon consists of vestibular symptoms on exposure to high-intensity acoustic stimuli, reflecting pathological stimulation of semicircular canals or otoliths. We report a patient with posttraumatic Tullio phenomenon to illustrate how precise measurement of eye movements during auditory stimulation, using the magnetic search coil technique, may characterize movements that are not clinically apparent or easily measured by other means. Such measurements in patients with surgically verified lesions may further elucidate the mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon.

Motor neuron disease with slow eye movements and vertical gaze palsy.

Two middle-aged patients with motor neuron disease showed common eye movement disorders and intellectual impairment in the later stage of the illness. Eye movement disorders were characterized by slow saccades and vertical glaze palsy, which seemed to be supranuclear ophthalmoplegia. Neuropathological examination of one patient revealed degeneration of the substantia nigra without pathological changes in the ocular motor nuclei, in addition to findings compatible with motor neuron disease. These cases appear to raise a possibility of a distinct group of multiple system degenerations.

Looking but not seeing: attention, perception, and eye movements in simultanagnosia.

We studied three subjects who reported the apparent "disappearance" of stationary objects from direct view. They had simultanagnosia caused by CT-verified bilateral superior occipital lobe lesions. They had no abnormalities of visual acuity or fields to explain their defect. EOG with computer analysis showed intact motility and scanning. Most important, the subjects reported intermittent disappearance of a light target during EOG-verified fixation--ie, they were looking but not seeing. Results indicate that attention mechanisms that permit sustained awareness of visual targets depend on the su

Visual field defects for vergence eye movements and for stereomotion perception.

An objective visual field can be mapped in terms of stimulus-induced eye movement. The authors used the scleral coil technique to record vergence and conjugate eye movements while stimulating different visual field locations with a 3 X 3 deg target whose image vergence was oscillated. For each of three subjects tested there was a visual field location where vergence eye movements were much weaker than in a control location of equal retinal eccentricity. On the other hand, conjugate eye movements driven from these two locations by lateral motion were similar. Field defects for ocular vergence c

Bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia with absence of convergent eye movements. Clinicopathologic correlation.

A case of bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia of long duration with autopsy confirmation is reported. The main features of the syndrome included paresis of ocular adduction upon attempted lateral gaze, horizontal nystagmus in the abducting eye, and an absence of converging eye movements. Examination of Weil-stained sections revealed multiple plaques of demyelination. The medial longitudinal fasciculus was demyelinated bilaterally in the upper pons-caudal midbrain. The oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nuclei appeared relatively well preserved. The internal capsule was severely damaged. La

[Rapid intermittent eye movements in selected diseases of the nervous system].

The authors report the results of electronystagmographic investigations of the eyes in patients with damage to the motor nerves of the eyes, their neuromuscular junctions in cases of internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and lesions of the cerebellar and extrapyramidal systems. In all these cases pathological records of these movements were found which were fairly characteristic of a given type of damage.

Predictive eye movements do not discriminate between dyslexic and control children.

Pavlidis has suggested that predictive saccadic tracking eye movements distinguish between reading disabled and normal children. We have examined saccadic eye movement tracking in 34 dyslexic and 33 control subjects, between 10 and 12 yr old. The subjects were equivalent in performance IQ (WISC-R), with differences between verbal and performance IQ of less than 30 points. Children with neurological, visual or auditory deficits or histories of emotional problems and hyperactivity were excluded. There were no differences between the groups on the eye movement tracking task when scored objectivel

Optokinetic eye movements in albino rabbits: inversion in anterior visual field.

When visual contrasts are restricted to the anterior sector (90 degrees to 180 degrees) of the albino rabbit's visual field, eye position is dramatically unstable, and when such contrasts are moved, horizontal optokinetic eye movements are inverted: the direction of pursuit is opposite to that of the stimulus. In the posterior visual field stability and optokinetic reactions are normal, as in all parts of the pigmented rabbit's visual field. This phenomenon may be one more of the complex of visual system defects linked to albinism.

What if it is the eyes? The effect of eye movement disorders on cognitive testing in MS.

BACKGROUND: Visual cognitive tests that rely on saccades may be affected by internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), irrespective of cognitive ability. INO and cognitive decline are common in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). We assessed the impact of INO on visual versus non-visual cognitive tests in PwMS. METHODS: PwMS (n=197) completed auditory and visual neuropsychological tests, and demographically corrected Z-scores were obtained. INO was quantified using the DEMoNS infrared oculography protocol, applying the versional dysconjugacy index (VDI) of area under the saccadic trajectory (AUC)

Eye movement disorders after frontal eye field lesions in humans.

Eye movements were recorded electro-oculographically in three patients with a small ischemic lesion affecting the left frontal eye field (FEF) and in 12 control subjects. Reflexive visually guided saccades (gap and overlap tasks), antisaccades, predictive saccades, memory-guided saccades, smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) were studied in the three patients. Staircase saccades and double step saccades were also studied in one of the three patients. For both leftward and rightward saccades, latency in the overlap task (but not in the gap task) and that of correct antisaccades and of

The inappropriate occurrence of rapid eye movement sleep in narcolepsy is not due to a defect in homeostatic regulation of rapid eye movement sleep.

Narcolepsy type 1 is a disabling disorder with four primary symptoms: excessive-daytime-sleepiness, cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. The later three symptoms together with a short rapid eye movement (REM) sleep latency have suggested impairment in REM sleep homeostatic regulation with an enhanced propensity for (i.e. tendency to enter) REM sleep. To test this hypothesis, we challenged REM sleep homeostatic regulation in a recognized model of narcolepsy, the orexin knock-out (Orex-KO) mice and their wild-type (WT) littermates. We first performed 48 hr of REM sleep depr
