Intraosseous hemangiomas.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are classified as benign tumors of vascular nature. Some authors describe them as hamartomas. They originate and expand inside bone structures. They are usually congenital, rarely of posttraumatic origin. In the Maxillo-Facial Surgery departments of the Universities of Rome "La Sapienza" and "Tor Vergata," from 1990 to 2004, 11 cases of intraosseous hemangioma have been diagnosed. In 6 cases, the neoplasm localized in the zygomatic region; in 3 cases, at the mandible level; in 1 patient, in the maxillary site; and in 1 patient, in the frontal bone. Literature review an

[Parotid gland Warthin's tumor combined with actinomycosis].

The authors describe the diagnostic problems and difficulties of treatment of Warthin's tumor combined with actinomycosis. A 48-year-old woman was presented with a mass in the left parotid region and paresis of the lower left palpebra. The CT, echography, parotid X-ray findings supposed a neoplasm of the left parotid gland which was proved by intraoperative freezing histology. The ramus of the mandible was involved in the process. Total parotidectomy and partial mandiblectomy were performed, with sacrifice of the facial nerve, followed by nerve reconstruction. The final histological evaluation

Salivary-type myxoid myoepithelioma of the sinonasal tract: a potential diagnostic pitfall.

A 38-year-old woman presented with otalgia and facial pain. She was found to have a tumour involving the right maxillary sinus and pterygopalatine fossa. Exclusively composed of a myxoid population of spindle and stellate cells within a mucosubstance-rich matrix, it was originally interpreted as a mesenchymal neoplasm. However, immunophenotypic characterization revealed a pure population of salivary-type myoepithelial cells with cytoplasmic co-expression of cytokeratin, vimentin, muscle-specific actin, S-100 protein and glial fibrillary acidic protein. Sinonasal myxoid myoepithelial neoplasia

Perineural Invasion of Cranial Nerves in Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Unraveling Its Complexities, Diagnostic Challenges, and Multifaceted Treatment Approaches.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common neoplasm among non-melanoma skin cancers. When associated with perineural invasion of the cranial nerves, with clinical features often observed in trigeminal and facial nerves due to their cutaneous extension, it may lead to a worse prognosis. This paper introduces a rare case of an 81-year-old male, with a history of a moderately differentiated invasive carcinoma of the left frontal region with perineural invasion on the left trigeminal cranial nerve. The case underscores the aggressive nature of the intraneural infiltration by squam

Mandibular Fracture as First Sign of an Occult Intraosseous Hemangioma.

Intraosseous hemangioma (IH) in the maxillofacial area is a very uncommon neoplasm. Here, the authors show an exceptional case not previously reported in the literature of a 65-year-old man who presented with a pathological mandibular fracture following a facial trauma that was the first sign of an occult cavernous IH. Complete excision of the tumor in the mandibular ramus reduced the risk of severe bleeding and prevented long-term recurrence, whereas immobilization of the fracture obtained an excellent functional result. This clinical report highlights the possibility that a previously unknow

Clinical and epidemiological characterisation of Burkitt's lymphoma: an eight-year case study at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana.

Endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is a juvenile malignant neoplasm of B-lymphocyte origin, markedly affected by climate, vegetation and geographical location. This real country-based, cross-sectional, retrospective study reviews all out-patient clinical records of patients histologically and/or clinically diagnosed with BL from January, 2000 to December, 2007 at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana, a country within the malaria and lymphoma belts of the world. The aim of the study is to clinically and epidemiologically characterise all cases of BL over an eight-year period to ascertain the

Mechanism of brain tumor headache.

BACKGROUND: Headaches occur commonly in all patients, including those who have brain tumors. Using the search terms "headache and brain tumors," "intracranial neoplasms and headache," "facial pain and brain tumors," "brain neoplasms/pathology," and "headache/etiology," we reviewed the literature from the past 78 years on the proposed mechanisms of brain tumor headache, beginning with the work of Penfield. FINDINGS: Most of what we know about the mechanisms of brain tumor associated headache come from neurosurgical observations from intra-operative dural and blood vessel stimulation as well as

Unusual manifestations in two cases of necrotizing myopathy associated with SRP-antibodies.

Anti-SRP (signal recognition particle) positive necrotizing myopathy is commonly not associated with neoplasms. We demonstrate two histologically confirmed cases with unusual manifestations of anti-SRP positive necrotizing myopathy. A 65-year-old man presented with rapidly progressing weakness and mild difficulties in swallowing and speaking. Screening for underlying disorders revealed a moderately differentiated renal adenocarcinoma. The muscular symptoms partially improved after tumor nephrectomy and prednisone treatment. However, the patient developed pulmonary metastases and died of the se

Hydroa Vacciniforme Lymphoproliferative Disorder in a Young Spanish Woman: An Infrequent Case With Fatal Outcome.

Hydroa vacciniforme (HV) lymphoproliferative disorder is a rare NK/T-cell lymphoma mainly affecting children and with a clinical resemblance to HV, which is mostly reported in Latin American and some Asian countries. Overall, the mature T cell and NK-cell neoplasms are now grouped into 9 families based on diverse concepts: cell of origin/differentiation state, clinical scenario, disease localization, and cytomorphology. HV lymphoproliferative disorder is listed within the group of Ebstein Barr Virus-positive T-cell and NK-cell lymphoid proliferations and lymphomas of childhood according to the

Intraparotid Osteolipoma: Treatment Option and Surgical View.

Osteolipoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the mesenchymal fat tissue cells and characterized by the presence of bone formation. In the head and neck district osteolipoma has been described as parapharyngeal, nasopharinx, submandibular gland, eyelid, floor of the mouth, and skull base lesion. Only 1 case of osteolipoma was reported as a neoplasm of the parotid region. Considering the rarity of the osteolipoma, our purpose was to describe the first case of totally intraparotid gland localization of osteolipoma and summarize and review the actual literature concerning the presence of this

[Odontogenic myxoma recurring after 11 years: case report and observations on this unusual neoplasm].

Odontogenic myxoma is usually a benign neoplasm, although it has the ability to infiltrate surrounding tissues thus becoming locally invasive. Furthermore, it has a moderately high recurrence rate and can sometimes display a really aggressive behaviour. An unusual case of a 48-y-old woman in whom odontogenic myxoma recurred 11 years after excision of the primitive lesion is reported. Although rare, the possibility of malignant evolution led us to consider which was the most appropriate management of both the neoplasm and the recurrence. A careful assessment of the clinical, radiographical, tom

Melanocytic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: A plethora of airway nightmares!

Melanocytic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign neoplasm involving the jaw. It is characterized by a high rate of recurrence and locally aggressive enlargement. This condition often leads to facial asymmetry and difficulty in airway management during surgical excision. Due to its rarity, there are no established guidelines for the perioperative management of MNTI. We describe the successful airway and anaesthetic management of three paediatric cases of MNTI. These cases highlight the complexities of airway management in paediatric patients with limited oral space and faci

Cardiac self-limiting rhabdomyomas in a neonatal patient with tuberous sclerosis complex: a case report with negative genetic testing.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a hereditary condition that leads to the development of non-malignant neoplasms in various organs, including cardiac rhabdomyomas, which can cause significant complications. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the case of a 15-day-old male neonate who was hospitalized due to intracardiac masses and brain lesions, despite the absence of TSC gene mutations. The patient's mother exhibited facial angiofibromas, a common feature of TSC. Over a 2-year follow-up period, spontaneous regression of the cardiac tumor was observed. CONCLUSIONS: This c

Primary extracranial meningioma of maxilla- A case report.

Meningiomas represent one of the commonest benign neural tissue neoplasms, but it is an extremely rare finding in the oral cavity. It tends to arise from the arachnoid cap cells pertaining to dura matter of the Meninges, the choroid plexus, or the brain stem. Herein, we report the case of a 36-year-old male patient, who visited our Department with the chief complaint of facial swelling associated with asymmetry. Based on thorough clinical, radiological, histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses, a diagnosis of Primary Extracranial Meningioma (PEM) of the Maxilla was made. Later, the t

Metastatic melanoma misdiagnosed as a temporomandibular disorder: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Malignancies in the head and neck region are difficult to diagnose because of their deep location and presence of symptoms mimicking those of temporomandibular disorders or other orofacial pain disorders. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 75-year-old woman reported experiencing right-sided jaw pain, temporal discomfort and paresthesia. She had undergone conservative therapy for temporomandibular joint disorder, which was unsuccessful. A magnetic resonance image of the midface revealed a mass on the base of the tongue along with possible metastatic lesions to the brain. Further investigation of

Unexpected delayed orofacial symptoms induced by facial cosmetic filler: A report of 3 cases.

In addition to well-known side effects such as rash, redness, and bone resorption, unexpected facial complications may occasionally occur several years after certain medical procedures. This report presents rare cases of orofacial symptoms that developed as delayed responses to cosmetic filler injections. Three separate patients presented to the authors' institution with varying severities of orofacial symptoms. These symptoms, initially diagnosed clinically as inflammation or neoplasms of the parotid gland, were later identified through magnetic resonance imaging as diseases potentially assoc

Acoustic neuromas after failed radiation therapy: challenges of surgical salvage.

OBJECTIVES: As stereotactic radiation has emerged as a treatment option for acoustic neuromas, cases that require surgical salvage after unsuccessful radiation have emerged. We present a comparison of the technical challenges faced by the surgeons in the treatment of irradiated versus nonirradiated acoustic neuromas. STUDY DESIGN: Matched case-control series. METHODS: We identified nine patients with acoustic neuromas that required surgical resection after radiation therapy. Cases were performed with suboccipital and translabyrinthine approaches. Nine nonirradiated case-control subjects matc
