Experienced poverty stigma is associated with food insecurity, mental health, and resource utilization among Southern US mothers with low income.

BACKGROUND: The role of poverty stigma, defined as negative stereotyping based on socioeconomic status, in the relationship between food security and mental health has not been well explored. This study aimed to develop and test a theory to explain the role of internalized and experienced poverty stigma in the relationship between food security and mental health among mothers in the Southern US. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered in December 2023. The survey was delivered electronically via Qualtrics to mothers living in the southern US who reported a household income below 18

Home is where the HAART is: an examination of factors affecting neighbourhood perceptions among people with HIV/AIDS on antiretroviral therapy.

Understanding the neighbourhood perceptions of individuals living with HIV in urban and non-urban areas may help identify potential barriers to uptake and effectiveness of therapy. We evaluate how neighbourhood perceptions are influenced by socio-economic factors, such as food security and stable housing and other explanatory variables, among individuals receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in British Columbia. Neighbourhood perceptions, quality of life and socio-demographic information were collected in an interviewer-administered survey with study participants. Perception o

Spillover Effects of an Agricultural Livelihood Intervention Among People Living with HIV on Community Empowerment in Kenya.

Food insecurity and HIV are closely intertwined and together have compounded effects on morbidity and mortality. Additionally, food insecurity and HIV have combined effects on weakening communities, including causing decreased economic capacity, decreased ability of families to care for children, and intergenerational transfer of poverty. Livelihood interventions that improve food security are promising approaches for improving the quality of life of people living with HIV, and they may also have profound effects on the strength and stability of communities. We conducted a cluster randomized c

Pediatric Emergency Department-based Food Insecurity Screening During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The emergency department (ED) is a safety net, caring for families who lack adequate access to food and other basic needs. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a dramatic rise in food insecurity (FI) nationally; however, little is known about the prevalence of FI among families seen in pediatric EDs (PED). In this study we aimed to determine the prevalence of FI, as well as awareness and utilization of supplemental food services, among families seen in an urban PED during the COVID-19 pandemic using an electronic screening survey. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of families s

Food insecurity and violence in a prospective cohort of women at risk for or living with HIV in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity and violence are two major public health issues facing U.S. women. The link between food insecurity and violence has received little attention, particularly regarding the temporal ordering of events. The present study used data from the Women's Interagency Human Immunodeficiency Virus Study to investigate the longitudinal association of food insecurity and violence in a cohort of women at risk for or living with HIV. METHODS: Study participants completed six assessments from 2013-16 on food insecurity (operationalized as marginal, low, and very low food security) a

A latent class analysis to identify socio-economic and health risk profiles among mothers of young children predicting longitudinal risk of food insecurity.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the current study was to use a social determinants of health (SDOH) framework and latent class analysis (LCA) to identify risk classes among mothers with young children. The risk classes were then used to predict food insecurity severity and stability/change of food insecurity over time. METHOD: The secondary data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 2,368; oversampled for non-marital births) was used in this study. Household food insecurity was assessed using the 18-items USDA Food Security Survey. A seventeen-item inventory of educational, econ

[Selenium sufficiency in patients with malabsorption syndrome and its optimization with selenium enriched food supplements].

Selenium security was measured in 15 adult patients suffering from malabsorption syndrome, resulted from stomach and small intestine surgical resection consequences. In 7 of them (47%) marked deficiency of this essential trace element was revealed and in other 6 (40%)--suboptimal security. The indices of selenium security in observed patients markedly and significantly (p < 0.003) increased after a 3-week course of dietetic treatment including uptake of organic selenium enriched food supplement in amount equal to 90 mcg Se per day. This dietetic treatment had mild "physiologic" character that

Association and disparities of food insecurity and exposure to violence: analysis of the National Survey of Children's Health.

CONTEXT: Lack of access to food is a significant concern for child well-being, and it creates many health disparities and adverse social outcomes. Food insecurity and its many associated risk factors increase parental stress, which are strongly correlated with an increased risk of child abuse and maltreatment. Research now identifies being witness to domestic abuse as a form of child maltreatment, and exposure to violence in the community has been shown to result in similar long-term impacts. OBJECTIVES: Given the potential for lifelong adverse effects from experiencing adverse childhood even

Influence of Social Inequalities on Dietary Diversity and Household Food Insecurity: An In-Depth Nutrition Baseline Survey Conducted in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Home to a significant proportion of the world's population, India is one of the hardest hit countries when it comes to malnutrition. While the magnitude of malnutrition in India is vast, it is also unevenly spread due to inequalities of the social, political, and economic situation. As part of the special initiative of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), "One World - No Hunger," GIZ is implementing a Global Program on "Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience" (FaNS) in 12 countries, including India. Household food insecurity was prevalent in Java during Indonesia's economic crisis.

Valid assessment of household food security is important, particularly in rapidly changing circumstances such as the economic crisis that struck Indonesia in 1998. The Cornell-Radimer tool for measuring household food security has now been used in several social and economic settings. An adaptation of this tool was used in the context of the economic crisis of Java, Indonesia in June-August 1998 in a survey of 1423 mothers with children < 5 y old. Qualitative and quantitative data contributed to understanding food insecurity and provided evidence for some aspects of validity. The data showed s
