Interview-Based Patient- and Caregiver-Reported Experiences of Hunger and Improved Quality of Life with Setmelanotide Treatment in Bardet-Biedl Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare genetic disease associated with hyperphagia, a pathologic insatiable hunger, due to impaired signaling in the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) pathway. The impact of hyperphagia on the lives of patients with BBS and their families has not been fully characterized. METHODS: Patients with BBS or their caregivers who participated in clinical trials of the MC4R agonist setmelanotide (NCT03013543 and NCT03746522) were included in this qualitative study. Telephone interviews were conducted using a semistructured interview guide to explore patient ex

Similarities in Metabolic Flexibility and Hunger Hormone Ghrelin Exist between FTO Gene Variants in Response to an Acute Dietary Challenge.

The rs9939609 polymorphism of the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene has been associated with obesity, and studies have also shown that environmental/lifestyle interaction such as dietary intake might mediate this effect. The current study investigates the postprandial hormonal regulators of hunger and indirect markers of substrate utilisation and metabolic flexibility following a dietary challenge to determine if suppression of circulating ghrelin levels and/or reduced metabolic flexibility exist between FTO genotypes. One hundred and forty seven healthy, sedentary males and females (

Reflections of hunger and satiation in the structure of temporal organization of slow electrical and spike activities of fundal and antral stomach muscles in rabbits.

Manifestations of hunger and satiation in myoelectric activity patterns in different portions of the stomach were studied in chronic experiments. The state of hunger manifested in the structure of temporal organization of slow electric activity of muscles in the stomach body and antrum in the form of bimodal distributions of slow electric wave periods, while satiation as unimodal distribution. In hunger-specific bimodal distribution of slow electric wave periods generated by muscles of the stomach body and antrum, the position of the first maximum carries the information about oncoming food re

From Hunger to Hospitality: Food, Memory, and Collective Identity in Mohammed Dib's La Grande Maison and Diana Abu-Jaber's Crescent.

BACKGROUND: This study explored food memory in Mohammed Dib's La Grande Maison and Diana Abu-Jaber's Crescent. Recent scholarship conceptualizes food as a symbolic and cultural medium that shapes memory, identity, exile, trauma, and belonging rather than merely satisfying physical needs. The analysis reveals how, in both novels, food serves as a medium for communicating and representing historical experience and collective identity. METHODS: Methodologically, the paper uses a qualitative comparative literary approach, comprising close reading of selected passages that address hunger, bread, c

Myelin endocytosis by brain endothelial cells causes endothelial iron overload and oligodendroglial iron hunger in hypoperfusion-induced white matter injury.

AIMS: Hypoperfusion induces significant white matter injury in cerebral vascular disorders, including arteriosclerotic cerebral small vessel disease (aCSVD), which is prevalent among the elderly. Iron transport by blood vessel endothelial cells (BVECs) from the periphery supports oligodendrocyte maturation and white matter repair. This study aims to elucidate the association between iron homeostasis changes and white matter injury severity, and explore the crosstalk between BVECs and oligodendroglial lineage cells. METHODS: In vivo: C57BL/6 mice were subjected to unilateral common carotid art

The relationship between patient-reported hunger and gastric contents in adult patients with acute surgical abdominal pathology: exploratory prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported hunger has been used to infer an empty stomach preoperatively. We hypothesised that hungry patients with acute abdominal pathology would be considered 'low risk' of aspiration when assessed by gastric ultrasound. The primary aim was to determine whether patient-reported hunger was associated with gastric ultrasound findings of aspiration risk in patients with acute abdominal pathology. METHODS: In this exploratory prospective observational study, we recruited adults awaiting emergency abdominal surgery without additional risk factors for gastroparesis. Participant

Adolescent Health Risk Behaviors, Adverse Experiences, and Self-reported Hunger: Analysis of 10 States from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys.

We examined associations between adolescent self-reported hunger, health risk behaviors, and adverse experiences during the 2018-2019 school year. Youth Risk Behavior Survey data were pooled from 10 states. Prevalence ratios were calculated, and we assessed effect measure modification by sex. The prevalence of self-reported hunger was 13%. Self-reported hunger was associated with a higher prevalence of every health risk behavior/adverse experience analyzed, even after adjusting for sex, grade, and race/ethnicity. Sex did not modify associations. Findings underscore needs for longitudinal resea

Functional MRI of Challenging Food Choices: Forced Choice between Equally Liked High- and Low-Calorie Foods in the Absence of Hunger.

We are continuously exposed to food and during the day we make many food choices. These choices play an important role in the regulation of food intake and thereby in weight management. Therefore, it is important to obtain more insight into the mechanisms that underlie these choices. While several food choice functional MRI (fMRI) studies have been conducted, the effect of energy content on neural responses during food choice has, to our knowledge, not been investigated before. Our objective was to examine brain responses during food choices between equally liked high- and low-calorie foods in

Associations between nutritional intake, stress and hunger biomarkers, and anxiety and depression during the treatment of anorexia nervosa in adolescents and young adults.

Adolescents and young adults (AYA) with anorexia nervosa (AN) frequently have co-occurring anxiety and depression, which can negatively impact prognosis. To inform treatment of co-occurring anxiety and depression, we assessed the association of nutritional intake and hunger/stress hormones on anxiety and depression using a six-month longitudinal study of 50 AYA females receiving care for AN. At baseline and six months, we measured anxiety (Spielberger State/Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI]), depression (Beck Depression Inventory [BDI]), body mass index (BMI), 3-day dietary intake (total calories

The Effects of Graded Levels of Calorie Restriction: XVI. Metabolomic Changes in the Cerebellum Indicate Activation of Hypothalamocerebellar Connections Driven by Hunger Responses.

Calorie restriction (CR) remains the most robust intervention to extend life span and improve healthspan. Though the cerebellum is more commonly associated with motor control, it has strong links with the hypothalamus and is thought to be associated with nutritional regulation and adiposity. Using a global mass spectrometry-based metabolomics approach, we identified 756 metabolites that were significantly differentially expressed in the cerebellar region of the brain of C57BL/6J mice, fed graded levels of CR (10, 20, 30, and 40 CR) compared to mice fed ad libitum for 12 hours a day. The Effect of Hunger on the Likelihood of Glucose Excursions in Adults with Overweight or Obesity: Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Ecological Momentary Assessment Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining stable glucose levels is important for metabolic health. Glucose excursions (GEs), which are marked increases in glucose following food intake, have been associated with a higher risk for cardiovascular disease and metabolic dysfunction. Individuals with overweight or obesity who do not have diabetes may still show impaired glucose regulation, as reflected in increased glucose variability. Hunger, as a real-time physiological cue, may be associated with subsequent glucose changes and represents a potential target for just-in-time adaptive interventions. OBJECTIVE: This

Position statement: the Society of Behavioral Medicine supports retaining funding for school meals to reduce hunger and food insecurity in American children.

Millions of children across the United States rely on school meals as a primary source of daily nutrition. Access to healthy meals improves diet quality, reduces hunger, and supports better attendance and academic performance. Recent federal actions, however, have threatened the reach and quality of these programs. Funding reductions have limited schools' ability to purchase fresh, locally sourced foods and have made universal free meals harder to provide. These changes disproportionately affect students from low-income and historically marginalized communities, increasing food insecurity, sti

G-protein β3 subunit 825CC genotype is associated with postprandial distress syndrome with impaired gastric emptying and with the feeling of hunger in Japanese.

BACKGROUND: G-protein dysfunction related alteration of intracellular signal transduction might be linked to various abnormalities of functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) as well as G-protein is also key signaling molecule sensorimotor functions in the GI tract. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the correlation between gastric emptying and GNβ3 and 5-HTs polymorphisms in functional dyspepsia (FD) as defined by Rome III classification. METHODS: Seventy-four patients presenting with typical symptoms of FD (epigastric pain syndrome: EPS, n=24; postpra

Evaluation of an intensive desensitisation, oral tolerance therapy and hunger provocation program for children who have had prolonged periods of tube feeds.

BACKGROUND: Some children with feeding difficulties may require nasogastric tube feeding or insertion of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) from a young age. A small cohort of these children can develop severe oral aversions that can delay the re-introduction of oral feeding. Multidisciplinary approaches that provide an intensive approach are deemed the most effective method of intervention to reduce nasogastric and PEG dependency. METHODS: Two children and their parents received an intensive approach to reduce PEG feeds (Child A and Child B), while one child and her parents elected

When hunger and thirst part ways: a longitudinal comparison of men and women across the Ramadan fasting-recovery cycle, with non-fasting controls.

INTRODUCTION: The Ramadan fast imposes abstinence from food and water during daytime for 28-29 days, providing an ecological model of prolonged intermittent dry fasting. Longitudinal data characterizing hunger, thirst, and hydration trajectories across fasting and recovery remain limited. METHODS: In the 2021-2023 Circadian Ramadan (CiRAM) Study (registered in the Open Science Framework, DOI: https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/ETMU4), self-reported daily peak hunger and thirst levels, daily peak appetite timing, and estimated daily fluid intake were assessed in a prospective longitudinal cohort

More Than Hunger: A Qualitative Study of Food Insecurity and Relational Coping Among Individuals with Schizophrenia-Spectrum Psychotic Disorders and Their Case Managers.

Food insecurity is a critical social determinant of health among individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum psychotic disorders (SSPDs). While existing research emphasizes prevalence and clinical outcomes, less is known about how clients and case managers navigate chronic hunger relationally and emotionally. This qualitative descriptive study examined co-experiences and interpretations of food insecurity among individuals with SSPD and their case managers in a community mental health setting in the Southeastern United States. We conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with five clients diagnosed

Pregnant Women Consume a Similar Proportion of Highly vs Minimally Processed Foods in the Absence of Hunger, Leading to Large Differences in Energy Intake.

BACKGROUND: The eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) experimental paradigm measures intake of highly palatable, highly processed foods when sated. However, no studies have examined EAH in pregnant women. OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to investigate whether EAH in pregnant women differs by level of food processing and to examine relationships of EAH with hedonic hunger, addictive-like eating, and impulsivity. DESIGN: EAH was assessed in a counterbalanced crossover feeding substudy in which participants completed two free-access eating occasions following a standardized meal during their sec
