Tissue-specific and substrate-specific detection of aldehyde and pyridoxal oxidase in larval and imaginal tissues of Drosophila melanogaster.

The substrate specificities of aldehyde and pyridoxal oxidases in Drosophila melanogaster have been determined with a variety of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes. This analysis has led to the discovery that 2,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde is a specific substrate for pyridoxal oxidase, as based on the histochemical distribution of oxidase activity, the absence of enzymatic activity in the lpo strains, and the dosage dependence on the number of 1po+ genes present. The tissue-specific localization of aldehyde oxidase (AO) and pyridoxal oxidase (PO) in the larval and adult structures showed that AO w

Symptoms in Persons With Either Active or Inactive Crohn's Disease Are Agnostic to Disease Phenotype: The Magic in Imagine Study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the relationship between disease symptoms and disease phenotype in a large Canadian cohort of persons with Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: Adults (n=1515) with CD from 14 Canadian centers participated in the Mind And Gut Interactions Cohort (MAGIC) between 2018 and 2023. Disease activity was measured using the 24-item IBD Symptom Inventory-Short-Form (IBDSI-SF). We compared the symptoms commonly associated with active versus inactive disease, and explored symptoms patterns in relation to disease phenotype, based on the Montreal Classification. Re-imagining poppers regulation in Canada: Perspectives from pharmacists, pharmacy students and public health practitioners.

Alkyl nitrites, commonly known as poppers, remain widely used in Canada despite regulatory prohibitions that restrict their sale as prescription-only substances. This incongruence between policy and practice has contributed to unregulated supply chains, product contamination, and missed opportunities for harm reduction - particularly among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, who use poppers at higher rates. This commentary examines the implications of reclassifying poppers as Schedule II drugs, permitting pharmacist-mediated, non-prescription access, drawing on perspectives fro

A future 'rodentopia'? Imagining a good life for rats and mice used in research (and the humans who work with them).

This invited perspective imagines 2066, this journal's centennial. Building on current understandings of rodent cognition, affect and welfare needs, we envision a world with dramatically altered societal attitudes toward rats and mice: widely kept as companion animals (pets), they are valued as intelligent, sociable beings. Scientific validity, animal welfare and human welfare are also considered inseparable priorities, further transforming biomedical animal-use. Within this context, animal-based research now involves two complementary models. Laboratory research persists, under conditions rad

Imagine for tomorrow, what you cannot feel now - The role of anhedonia in imagery-enhanced behavioral activation.

Preliminary evidence suggests that mental imagery-based elaboration of rewarding activities enhances anticipated pleasure, motivation, and behavioral engagement in non-clinical samples, but its effects in individuals experiencing anhedonia (loss of pleasure/interest) is unclear. Study 1 (N = 90) contrasted imagery-enhanced activity scheduling with two scheduling-only control conditions (Reminder/No Reminder Control) in an unselected sample. Study 2 (N = 108) compared imagery-enhanced activity scheduling with two control conditions (Neutral Imagery/Motivational Verbal Reasoning) in individuals

An EEG-based imagined speech recognition using CSP-TP feature fusion for enhanced BCI communication.

BACKGROUND: Imagined speech has emerged as a promising paradigm for intuitive control of brain-computer interface (BCI)-based communication systems, providing a means of communication for individuals with severe brain disabilities. In this work, a non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG)-based automated imagined speech recognition model was proposed to assist communication to convey the individual's intentions or commands. The proposed approach uses Common Spatial Patterns (CSP) and Temporal Patterns (TP) for feature extraction, followed by feature fusion to capture both spatial and temporal dy

"You don't imagine it happens to boys": The experience of childhood sexual abuse among Palestinian men in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a widespread global phenomenon. Though Palestinian boys in Israel face the highest risk of CSA compared to Palestinian girls and Jewish children, to date, no study has exclusively examined the CSA experiences of this group. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the experiences of Palestinian boys in Israel who have undergone CSA, focusing on how their social and political context shapes their meaning-making process of CSA. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Twelve men who experienced CSA in childhood and were considered resilient enough to take part in the study w

Re-imagining early cloverleaf skull deformity management from front to back approach-30 years on.

The cloverleaf skull deformity remains among the most complicated craniofacial conditions to successfully manage. Many cases achieve largely unsatisfactory outcomes due to the requirement for frequent reoperation on the cranial vault and failure to deal with all the elements of the craniofaciostenosis in a timely fashion. Early cranial vault surgery without addressing the cranial base deformity and its attendant cerebrospinal fluid flow changes is invariably challenging and disappointing. A recent focus on the expansion of the posterior cranial vault as a primary procedure with the greater vol

Is my patient too sad to approach their fear? Depression severity and imaginal exposure outcomes for patients with OCD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is conflicting research on how comorbid depression impacts the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) with exposure with response prevention. To better understand this relationship, the current study tests theoretical claims that greater depression limits motivation to engage in exposures, restricts habituation, and interferes with adaptive learning. METHODS: Fifty-one individuals with OCD completed a diagnostic interview and self-report questionnaires assessing depression symptom severity and then participated in a standardized imaginal exposure pro

Dissociable sources of erogeneity in social touch: Imagining and perceiving C-Tactile optimal touch in erogenous zones.

Previous research points to two major hypotheses regarding the mechanisms by which touch can be experienced as erotogenic. The first concerns the body part to which touch is applied (erogenous zones) and the second the modality of touch (sensual touch optimal in activating C Tactile afferents). In this study, we explored for the first time the relation between those two mechanisms in actual and imagined social touch. In a first experiment, we randomly assigned "Giver" and "Receiver" roles within 19 romantic couples (20 females, 18 males, age 32.34 ± 8.71SD years) and asked the "Giver" to apply

Repeated trauma exposure does not impair distress reduction during imaginal exposure for posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Based on experimental research on threat extinction, individuals exposed to repeated traumatic events may have impaired outcome in exposure therapy compared to those who have experienced a single trauma (Lang & McTeague, ). This study examined whether repeated trauma exposure predicts smaller changes in self-reported distress during imaginal exposure and worse outcomes for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: Adults (N = 116) with chronic PTSD received up to 10 sessions of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy. Trauma exposure was assessed via interview and numbe

Snippets From the Past: Imaginative Designs--Separating Hereditary From Environmental Effects in pre-DNA Times.

In an attempt to reproduce the results of an inconclusive 1927 report by the British Medical Research Council on the hereditary versus social origins of rheumatic fever, Read, Ciocco, and Taussig, from Johns Hopkins University, with the support of Frost, conducted a case-control study in 1935 and 1936. Their study, which appeared in the American Journal of Hygiene in 1938, was outstanding for its clear and tidy rationale for separating hereditary from environmental causes. The authors compared the prevalence of rheumatic fever among the relatives of 33 children admitted for "incident" rheumati

The benefits of toothpaste--real or imagined? The effectiveness of toothpaste in the control of plaque, gingivitis, periodontitis, calculus and oral malodour.

Toothbrushing with toothpaste is the most widely used method of home dental care for the populations of the Western world. The traditional role of toothpaste is primarily cosmetic, in aiding the cleaning of teeth and producing fresh breath. Today, however, formulations contain ingredients which may also help oral health by way of reducing dental plaque and improving gingival/periodontal health. This article provides a short review on the usefulness of these chemicals when used primarily in toothpastes.

Comparison of imaginal desensitisation with other behavioural treatments of pathological gambling. A two- to nine-year follow-up.

Of 120 pathological gamblers randomly allocated to imaginal desensitisation (ID) or to other behavioural procedures (60 to each group, all procedures administered over one week) 63 subjects were contacted two to nine years later. Twenty-six of the 33 who received ID reported control or cessation of gambling compared with 16 of 30 who received other behavioural procedures. This difference was significant, indicating ID had a specific effect additional to that of the other behavioural procedures. It is suggested the other procedures could be regarded as placebos. As the response at a mean of ove

The maternal brain in women with a history of early-life maltreatment: an imagination-based fMRI study of conflictual versus pleasant interactions with children.

BACKGROUND: Early-life maltreatment has severe consequences for the affected individual, and it has an impact on the next generation. To improve understanding of the intergenerational effects of abuse, we investigated the consequences of early-life maltreatment on maternal sensitivity and associated brain mechanisms during mother-child interactions. METHODS: In total, 47 mothers (22 with a history of physical and/or sexual childhood abuse and 25 without, all without current mental disorders) took part in a standardized real-life interaction with their 7- to 11-year-old child (not abused) and

Early Evaluation of IMAGINATOR 2.0 Intervention Targeting Self-Harm in Young People: Single-Arm Feasibility Trial.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm (SH) affects around 20% of all young people in the United Kingdom. Treatment options for SH remain limited and those available are long and costly and may not suit all young people. There is an urgent need to develop new scalable interventions to address this gap. IMAGINATOR is a novel imagery-based intervention targeting SH initially developed for individuals aged 16 to 25 years. It is a blended digital intervention delivering functional imagery training via therapy sessions and a smartphone app. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to pilot a new version of the app, IMAGINATOR

Imagining Coat-Hangers and Pills: A Qualitative Exploration of Abortion Beliefs and Attitudes in Hostile Policy Contexts in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: We explored awareness of and attitudes about the safety of various methods people use to attempt to end a pregnancy without medical assistance, which we refer to in this study collectively as self-managed abortion (SMA). METHODS: In 2020, we invited individuals living in eight United States (US) states considered "hostile" to abortion rights or with a history of criminalizing abortions performed outside the formal healthcare system to participate in semi-structured telephone interviews regarding their attitudes toward these practices. We analyzed coded transcripts for content and t

The molecular sensory machinery of a Chagas disease vector: expression changes through imaginal moult and sexually dimorphic features.

The triatomine bug Rhodnius prolixus is a main vector of Chagas disease, which affects several million people, mostly in Latin-America. Host searching, pheromone communication, and microclimatic preferences are aspects of its behaviour that depend on multimodal sensory inputs. The molecular bases of these sensory processes are largely unknown. The expression levels of genes transcribed in antennae were compared between 5th instar larvae, and female and male adults by means of RNA-Seq. The antennae of R. prolixus showed increased expression of several chemosensory-related genes in imaginal bugs
