Impression formation and revision in social anxiety disorder.

Interpersonal relations are markedly impaired in social anxiety. Yet, little is known about the ways social anxiety affects social cognition. We examined impression formation and impression revision among individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD, n = 26) and non-anxious individuals (n = 29). Participants read initial descriptions of protagonists depicted as dominant, neutral or submissive and rated them on social rank and affiliation dimensions. Next, participants were presented with behavioral acts that were either congruent, incongruent or irrelevant to the initial descriptions, and re-

Mental models at work: cognitive causes and consequences of conflict in organizations.

This research investigated the reciprocal relationship between mental models of conflict and various forms of dysfunctional social relations in organizations, including experiences of task and relationship conflicts, interpersonal hostility, workplace ostracism, and abusive supervision. We conceptualize individual differences in conflict construals as reflecting variation in people's belief structures about conflict and explore how different elements in people's associative networks-in particular, their beliefs about their best and worst strategy in conflict-relate to their personality, shape

The mediating effect of psychosocial factors on suicidal probability among adolescents.

Suicidal probability is an actual tendency including negative self-evaluation, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, and hostility. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of psychosocial variances in the suicidal probability of adolescents, especially the role of mediating variance. This study investigated the mediating effects of psychosocial factors such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, stress, and social support on the suicidal probability among 1,586 adolescents attending middle and high schools in the Kyunggi Province area of South Korea. The relationship between depression and

Distinct paths to alcohol problems: Impacts of childhood maltreatment, attachment insecurity, and interpersonal problems.

Childhood maltreatment is a strong risk factor for increased alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. One possible explanation for these associations is the influence of dysfunctional attachment styles and interpersonal problems in adulthood. Individuals who have experienced childhood maltreatment are likely to develop maladaptive interpersonal styles due to insecure attachment. Maladaptive interpersonal styles may increase emotional distress, which in turn, can make these individuals vulnerable to alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. Using data from 508 undergraduate students, this stud

Interpersonal Predictors of Grief Among Caregivers of Persons With Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Family caregivers of persons with dementia experience grief as the care recipients' dementia advances. Here, we explore how various interpersonal factors hypothesized to relate to prolonged grief disorder (PGD) (e.g., perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness) and our micro-social theory of grief (e.g., relational deprivation, self-esteem-related social support) relate to caregiver dementia-related grief. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Baseline caregiver data (N = 69) from an National Institute on Aging funded randomized pilot trial evaluating a digital reminiscence plat

Childhood abuse, adult interpersonal abuse, and depression in individuals with extreme obesity.

This study sought to examine (a) a mediational model of childhood abuse, adult interpersonal abuse, and depressive symptoms and (b) the impact of weight-related teasing on rates and correlates of childhood abuse. Charts of 187 extremely obese individuals seeking psychological clearance for bariatric (weight-loss) surgery were retrospectively examined. Among the participants, 61% reported a history of childhood abuse, 30.5% reported adult interpersonal abuse, and 15% reported clinically significant depressive symptoms. Initially, the relationship between childhood abuse and current depressive s

Social anxiety and suicidal ideation: Test of the utility of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide.

Social anxiety is related to greater suicidality, even after controlling for depression and other psychopathology. The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS; Joiner, 2005) proposes that people are vulnerable to wanting to die by suicide if they experience both perceived burdensomeness (sense that one is a burden to others) and thwarted belongingness (a greater sense of alienation from others). Socially anxious persons may be especially vulnerable to these interpersonal factors. The current study tested whether interpersonal IPTS components independently and additively mediate the

Refining the relationships of perfectionism, self-efficacy, and stress to dieting and binge eating: Examining the appearance, interpersonal, and academic domains.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated domain-specific (appearance, interpersonal, and academic) interactive relationships of perfectionism, self-efficacy, and stress to dieting and binge eating, positing that the level of weight/shape self-efficacy would be pivotal in identifying elevated dieting versus elevated binge eating. METHOD: Participants were 406 randomly selected undergraduate women. At two time points (T1 and T2), 11 weeks apart, participants completed measures of dieting and binge eating attitudes/behaviors as well as domain-specific measures of perfectionism and self-efficacy (e.g.,

Interpersonal Psychotherapy in the Chinese Cultural Context: Exploring the Problem Areas With Cultural Specificity.

This study explored the culturally specific manifestations of interpersonal psychotherapy's (IPT's) four problem areas within the Chinese cultural context. Synthesizing qualitative feedback from IPT training and clinical supervision involving approximately 500 Chinese mental health professionals (2018-2025), the analysis aimed to highlight how traditional values-such as collectivism, filial piety (xiao), and face (mianzi, or social reputation and dignity)-profoundly shape interpersonal distress. The specific cultural nuances examined included how complicated grief is often masked by male stoic

Stability and oscillation in interpersonal awareness: a clinical-developmental analysis.

This paper has examined the research questions and strategies used by those who attempt to study social development from a cognitive-developmental orientation. It began by pointing to the need to integrate the descriptive work done by social-cognitive developmental researchers with some of the approaches taken by clinical and social psychologists in studying the same general phenomenon: interpersonal relations. An issue-by-stage social-cognitive map developed on the basis of both conceptual and empirical investigations was described, as were some of the properties which defined these stages. F

From dyadic coping to emotional sharing and multimodal interpersonal synchrony: Protocol for a laboratory experiment.

During interpersonal emotion regulation, relationship partners mutually regulate each other's emotional states. Interpersonal emotion regulation occurs at three main timescales: phasic (from several hundred milliseconds to about 10s), tonic (from 10s to 1 hour), and chronic (from weeks to months and years). Prior research has examined interpersonal emotion regulation at only one or two timescales simultaneously. The proposed research will examine variables relating to interpersonal emotion regulation in close relationships across all three timescales. A total of 150 romantic couples will engag

The GaMMA corpus of Danish polyadic conversations with gaze speech and motion data in quiet and noise.

The GaMMA (Gaze, Motion, and Multi-talker Audio) corpus captures the behavior of polyadic conversations among native Danish speakers under both normal and cocktail party conditions. Eleven groups of four normal-hearing participants are recorded while engaged in natural and spontaneous interactions. All conversations were conducted without conversational tasks. Each group was intentionally composed of participants with prior intragroup and interpersonal relations. Gaze and motion data were collected using an optical tracking system and eye-tracking glasses, while speech was recorded via omnidir

"The impact of COVID-19 on employee productivity and the future of remote work".

PURPOSE: This paper explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on employee productivity and the future of remote work beyond the pandemic years. Using data collected from 646 remote workers, we examined the influence of interpersonal relations, time management, stress, and skill development on productivity. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: We validated our model using structural equation modelling (SEM), and the results revealed that the sudden shift to remote work had no significant negative impact on productivity. FINDINGS: The results of this study may encourage HR managers to expand remote

Mental Health Nursing Simulation to Develop the Therapeutic Use of Self.

BACKGROUND: Although simulation is well established for procedural and acute care skills, mental health nursing simulation focused on the therapeutic use of self remains underrepresented in the literature. This article describes the design, implementation, and educational contribution of three theory-informed mental health nursing simulations developed to support competency-based psychiatric nursing education. METHOD: Guided by Peplau's interpersonal relations theory, three simulations were developed addressing motivational interviewing for alcohol use disorder, trauma-informed care for intim

The Contents and Function of Humor Among Hunter-Gatherers.

Across cultures, people find many of the same things funny. Competing theories of humor have been forwarded to account for this. Adopting a view of humor as an evolved response to benign violations, I argue that four comic themes characterize most humor across cultures: pain and misfortune, sex and obscenity, the foreign, and the sacred. I propose that each of these themes are ultimately grounded in our evolved psychology as universal pressure points that humor can tap into. I review 745 descriptions of humor in the ethnographic record of the ten hunter-gatherer societies in the Probability Sa

The relation between the bifactor model of the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory and conduct problems in adolescence: Variations across gender, ethnic background, and age.

The current study examines how the bifactor model of the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory (YPI) is related to conduct problems in a sample of Dutch adolescents (N = 2,874; 43% female). It addresses to what extent the YPI dimensions explain variance over and above a General Psychopathy factor (i.e., one factor related to all items) and how the general factor and dimensional factors are related to conduct problems. Group differences in these relations for gender, ethnic background, and age were examined. Results showed that the general factor is most important, but dimensions explain variance

Moving Narcissus: Can Narcissists Be Empathic?

Empathy plays a critical role in fostering and maintaining social relations. Narcissists lack empathy, and this may account for their interpersonal failures. But why do narcissists lack empathy? Are they incapable, or is change possible? Three studies addressed this question. Study 1 showed that the link between narcissism and low empathy generalizes to a specific target person presented in a vignette. The effect was driven by maladaptive narcissistic components (i.e., entitlement, exploitativeness, exhibitionism). Study 2 examined the effect of perspective-taking (vs. control) instructions on
