An averaging model for analysis and interpretation of high-order genetic interactions.

While combinatorial genetic data collection from biological systems in which quantitative phenotypes are controlled by active and inactive alleles of multiple genes (multi-gene systems) is becoming common, a standard analysis method for such data has not been established. The currently common approaches have three major drawbacks. First, although it is a long tradition in genetics, modeling the effect of an inactive allele (a null mutant allele) contrasted against that of the active allele (the wild-type allele) is not suitable for mechanistic understanding of multi-gene systems. Second, a com

Can MRI pelvimetry predict the technical difficulty of laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery?

PURPOSE: Selection of an open or minimally invasive approach to total mesorectal excision (TME) is generally based on surgeon preference and an intuitive assessment of patient characteristics but there consensus on criteria to predict surgical difficulty. Pelvimetry has been used to predict the difficult surgical pelvis, typically using only bony landmarks. This study aimed to assess the relationship between pelvic soft tissue measurements on preoperative MRI and surgical difficulty. METHODS: Preoperative MRIs for patients undergoing laparoscopic rectal resection in the Australasian Laparosco

Computer-aided heuristics in orthodontics.

INTRODUCTION: During the decision-making process, physicians rely on heuristics that consist of simple, useful procedures for solving problems, intuitive shortcuts that produce reliable decisions based on limited information. In clinical situations characterized by a high degree of uncertainty such as those encountered in orthodontics, cognitive biases and judgment errors related to heuristics are not uncommon. This study aimed at promoting trust in the effective interface between the intuitive reasoning of the orthodontic practitioner and the computational heuristics emerging from simple stat

Using aggregated AI detector outcomes to eliminate false positives in STEM-student writing.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) large language models have become sufficiently accessible and user-friendly to assist students with course work, studying tactics, and written communication. AI-generated writing is almost indistinguishable from human-derived work. Instructors must rely on intuition/experience and, recently, assistance from online AI detectors to help them distinguish between student- and AI-written material. Here, we tested the veracity of AI detectors for writing samples from a fact-heavy, lower-division undergraduate anatomy and physiology course. Student participants

[Reinterpretation of the hepatic abscess, a new dimension in abdominal digestive surgery].

Pyogenic abscess of the liver is viewed here as a surgical disease, which appears to raise doubts as to its actual identity. Though located in a given abdominal organ, such abscesses find it hard to recognize this as their exclusive setting and attempt to shrug off these traditional confines. They aspire, rightly or wrongly perhaps, to symbolize a splanchnic context, though, in actual fact, the latter--at least for contingent, doctrinal reasons--is confined to the bipolar liver-bowel system. This context presents its candidacy as playing a leading role in a disease of such importance as to be

Why Men (Don't) Buy Sex: Purity Moralization and Perceived Harm as Constraints on Prostitution Offending.

This study explores the moralization of purity and perceptions of harm as constraints on sex buying among men. Purchasing sex has long been considered an offense against public morality. While personal morality provides a powerful constraint on offending, and people may vary in the extent to which they experience moral intuitions about bodily and spiritual purity, research has so far neglected the role of purity moralization in understanding sex buying behavior. We hypothesize specifically that moral intuitions about purity constrain sex buying by leading people to perceive it as inherently wr

Invariant representations of mass in the human brain.

An intuitive understanding of physical objects and events is critical for successfully interacting with the world. Does the brain achieve this understanding by running simulations in a mental physics engine, which represents variables such as force and mass, or by analyzing patterns of motion without encoding underlying physical quantities? To investigate, we scanned participants with fMRI while they viewed videos of objects interacting in scenarios indicating their mass. Decoding analyses in brain regions previously implicated in intuitive physical inference revealed mass representations that

A Review of Robotic Surgery: Engineering Considerations and Future Directions From Surgeons' Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Since its initial inception, robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery (RAMIS) is continually being applied to a wider array of procedures. However, there are significant limitations in current surgical subsystems, including a large learning curve, lack of effective haptic feedback, decreased surgical intuition, and decreased dexterity. METHODS: A narrative review of the literature was conducted to provide an overview of key developments in the field. Relevant articles were identified through searches of PubMed, IEEE, Google Scholar, and EMBASE, along with manual screening of

[Schroeder van der Kolk and Capgras's delusion].

BACKGROUND: About one hundred years prior to Capgras' description of the eponymous misidentification psychosis, this clinical picture had already been described by Schroeder van der Kolk. To this day, this publication has received unjustly little attention. AIM: To highlight Schroeder van der Kolk's case report and to bridge past and present, with emphasis on psychiatric care. METHOD: Analysis of the original case history alongside Capgras' three publications and presentation of a modernized adaptation. RESULTS: The pathogenetic factors emphasized by Capgras - alienation, heightened affecti

Airway leech infestation masquerading as a tumor: a rare case report.

Airway obstruction is a ventilatory dysfunction caused by internal and external diseases of the respiratory tract, which is usually considered a life-threatening clinical emergency. Traditionally, airway obstruction can be caused by respiratory tumors, trauma, and foreign bodies, among which tumors are the most common. Consequently, physicians may prioritize tumor-related diagnoses, potentially leading to the misdiagnosis of rare non-neoplastic conditions. Here, we report a case of a 61-year-old adult traveler who initially presented with mild dyspnea and a bronchial space-occupying lesion on

Tau trajectory in Alzheimer's disease: Evidence from the connectome-based computational models.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with an impairment of cognition and memory. Current research on connectomics have now related changes in the network organization in AD to the patterns of accumulation and spread of amyloid and tau, providing insights into the neurobiological mechanisms of the disease. In addition, network analysis and modeling focus on particular use of graphs to provide intuition into key organizational principles of brain structure, that stipulate how neural activity propagates along structural connections. The utility of connectome-based

Sertraline in panic disorder: initial treatment versus switch strategy.

The study explored whether there is differential efficacy for patients with panic disorder treated with sertraline initially (primary group) versus those switched (transfer group) after intolerance or nonresponse to imipramine in the context of the open 24-week treatment phase of a long-term maintenance/discontinuation study. Similar assessment and treatment procedures were used in the 2 groups and there were no concurrent cognitive behavioral interventions. A consistent pattern suggesting decreased efficacy for the transfer treatment group (n = 11, 68 +/- 25 mg/d) compared with the primary tr

Tutorial: survival analysis--a statistic for clinical, efficacy, and theoretical applications.

Current demands for increased research attention to therapeutic efficacy, efficiency, and also for improved developmental models call for analysis of longitudinal outcome data. Statistical treatment of longitudinal speech and language data is difficult, but there is a family of statistical techniques in common use in medicine, actuarial science, manufacturing, and sociology that has not been used in speech or language research. Survival analysis is introduced as a method that avoids many of the statistical problems of other techniques because it treats time as the outcome. In survival analysis

Nonconscious fear conditioning, visceral perception, and the development of gut feelings.

When people are presented with backward-masked images of fear-relevant stimuli and only some of these images are paired consistently with electric shocks, they can predict the occurrence of shocks even though they do not consciously know which images they have seen. We postulated that they may use the perception of visceral cues from the conditional fear response to facilitate the prediction of shocks. In this study, ability to detect heartbeats was used to index sensitivity to visceral cues. The results showed that subjects who could detect their heartbeats performed better than chance in pre

Four-dimensional neural space for moral inference.

Intuitive moral inference enables us to evaluate moral situations and judge their rightness or wrongness. Although Moral Foundations Theory provides a framework for understanding moral inference, its underlying neural basis remains unclear. To capture spontaneous neural activity during moral inference, participants were instructed to watch a film rich in moral content without making explicit judgments while undergoing fMRI scanning. Independent participants evaluated the moment-to-moment presence of twenty moral dimensions in the film. Correlation and consensus cluster analyses revealed four i

Resting-state networks of believers and non-believers: An EEG microstate study.

Atheism and agnosticism are becoming increasingly popular, yet the neural processes underpinning individual differences in religious belief and non-belief remain poorly understood. In the current study, we examined differences between Believers and Non-Believers with regard to fundamental neural resting networks using EEG microstate analysis. Results demonstrated that Non-Believers show increased contribution from a resting-state network associated with deliberative or analytic processing (Microstate D), and Believers show increased contribution from a network associated with intuitive or auto

The link between bipolar disorders and creativity: evidence from personality and temperament studies.

Although extensive literature supports connections between bipolar disorder and creativity, possible mechanisms underlying such relationships are only beginning to emerge. Herein we review evidence supporting one such possible mechanism, namely that personality/temperament contribute to enhanced creativity in individuals with bipolar disorder, a theory supported by studies showing that certain personality/temperamental traits are not only common to bipolar disorder patients and creative individuals but also correlate with measures of creativity. Thus, we suggest based on studies using three im

[Detection of the CAG trinucleotide repeats of MJD1 gene by recombinant DNA technology].

OBJECTIVE: To establish a stable, accurate and intuitive method for detecting the CAG trinucleotide repeats of MJD1 gene. METHODS: The CAG trinucleotide polymorphism of the MJD1 gene was analyzed by recombinant DNA technology and DNA sequencing in 35 spinocerebellar ataxia 3/Machado-Joseph disease (SCA3/MJD) patients from Mainland China. RESULTS: The range of the CAG repeat of the 35 patients was 65-81 (mean = 72.96 +/- 4.24). The CAG repeats contained two CAAs and one AAG variations in the CAG motif in all the patients and majority of the healthy controls. There was a CGG/GGG polymorphism a

Preservation of temporal skills in Alzheimer's disease.

Previous researchers have assumed that temporal skills are lost early in Alzheimer's disease. This belief may originate from examining only one type of temporal skill-logical time. In this study three categories of time, that draw on different types of processes, were selected. It was hypothesized that, although those with Possible Alzheimer's disease would have difficulty with the logical time items, they would show relatively preserved performance on the two other types of time skills that rely on the automatic processes of socialized and intuitive time. Participants included 11 individuals

Ethical decision-making under stress: the role of the nonreactive facet of mindfulness.

Business students commonly experience high levels of stress, often facing a variety of ethical challenges throughout their education experiences and well into their professional lives. Complicating matters, past research shows that such stress may compromise the processes associated with individual ethical decision-making (EDM). Some research indicates that individual differences, namely mindfulness, can benefit EDM. However, few if any studies have considered how mindfulness may mitigate adverse effects of stress on EDM. Many models of the EDM process have assumed a primary role for cognitive
