Parasitological and molecular investigation of consequences of raw meat feeding (BARF) in dogs and cats: implications for other pets living nearby.

Considering the original nature of carnivorism among dogs and cats, nowadays these pets are increasingly fed BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food/Bone And Raw Food) diet to improve their health conditions. However, this diet may also carry health risks, such as vitamin or mineral deficiencies, and infection with pathogens including parasites. In our study, fecal samples of 89 pet animals kept on BARF diet were subjected to coprological examination followed by molecular analyses. Six of them shed eggs of Dicrocoelium dendriticum. This result was confirmed with PCR and sequencing, and in one

Health evaluation of arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) cubs in Sweden.

Hematologic, serum biochemistry, and serum cortisol reference ranges were established and tonsil/rectal bacterial and fecal parasite examinations were performed on 21 wild arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) cubs during July 1996. Several of the hematologic and serum biochemistry values fell within normal ranges for other wild canids or domestic dogs of the same age class. Serum alanine transaminase and creatine phosphokinase values were significantly higher in the youngest cubs. Proteus vulgaris and Escherichia coli were isolated from both tonsilar and rectal swabs of several cubs in all dens. The mo

Enteric parasites of free-roaming, owned, and rural cats in prairie regions of Canada.

The objective of this study was to determine prevalence, intensity, and zoonotic potential of gastrointestinal parasites in free-roaming and pet cats in urban areas of Saskatchewan (SK) and a rural region in southwestern Alberta (AB). Fecal samples were analyzed using a modified double centrifugation sucrose flotation to detect helminth eggs and coccidian oocysts, and an immunofluorescence assay to detect Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Endoparasite prevalence was higher in samples from rural AB cats (41% of 27) and free-roaming SK cats (32% of 161) than client-owned SK cats (6% of 31). Parasites

Feline intestinal parasites in Finland: prevalence, risk factors and anthelmintic treatment practices.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of feline intestinal parasites in Finland and to determine the possible risk factors for infection. Altogether 411 feline fecal samples were analyzed with a flotation method to reveal helminth eggs and protozoan oocysts. Of the samples, 402 were also screened for Giardia species antigens with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The cat owners completed a questionnaire. Toxocara cati prevalence was 5.4% and Toxascaris leonina 0.2%. Taenia species eggs were found in 1.5% of the samples and Isospora felis in 0.7%, whilst 3.2% of

Presence of Enterocytozoon bieneusi associated with intestinal coccidia in patients with chronic diarrhea visiting an HIV center in Haiti.

This study investigated the presence of Enterocytozoon bieneusi as a possible cause of chronic diarrhea in Haitian patients attending the GHESKIO AIDS clinic in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Coccidian oocysts were found by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the stools of 58/74 patients with chronic diarrhea and included the following agents: 45 (60%) Cryptosporidium spp., 27 (34%) Cyclospora cayetanensis, and 11 (15%) Isospora belli. Four patients (5.5%) were co-infected with E. bieneusi and one (1.4%) had E. bieneusi alone. The PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method made it possi

[Parasitic infection in immunocompromised patients].

Several parasites are responsible for life threatening infections in immunocompromised patients. They occur in patients with a profound immunodeficiency affecting the T-cell mediated immunity. In AIDS patients, opportunistic infections are highly prevalent in those with CD4 lymphocyte counts < 200/mm3. Most of these parasites are intracellular protozoa. Severe parasitic infections in immunocompromised hosts either results from the reactivation of a previously acquired infection, such as toxoplasmosis, or from a primary acquired infection which manifests more severely because of the immune defe

Toxoplasmosis.

Recent research has shown that Toxoplasma gondii, the cause of human toxoplasmosis, is a protozoan close to the genus Isospora, whose life cycle involves cats as the definitive host, and other mammals, including man, and birds as intermediate hosts. Cats shed oocysts in their faeces; these are infective to the intermediate hosts when ingested. But the non-felid intermediate hosts can also become infected by eating other intermediate hosts. Probably most human infections occur in this manner and result from eating raw or insufficiently cooked meats. Most people become infected during their life

Invasive forms of canine endoparasites as a potential threat to public health - A review and own studies.

Abstract Dogs serve as the vectors of serious zoonotic parasitic diseases. In the month of May 2012 - 2014, 339 dog faeces samples from seven public sites in Chełmno, a town in northern Poland, were collected and examined to determine the gastrointestinal parasite fauna of dogs. Each faecal sample was dissected with a needle, checked for tapeworm segments and examined for parasite eggs and oocysts using the flotation and decantation method and a modified Baermann technique. Differences were observed in the degree of parasite species occurrence. The most dominant were [i]Toxocara canis[

Intestinal parasites in dogs and cats from the district of Évora, Portugal.

Intestinal parasites, both helminths and protozoa, are commonly found in domestic animals, and the possible transmission of enteric parasites from dogs and cats to humans may constitute a global potential health risk worldwide. In the present study, we analysed 148 stool samples from dogs (n=126) and cats (n=22) collected from animal shelters and veterinary clinics, in the district of Évora, Portugal. Microscopic examination confirmed that Giardia was the most frequent parasite in the studied population (34/148; 23%). Other parasites such as Ancylostoma sp., Isospora spp., Toxocara, Trichuris

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in Cuban acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients.

A coproparasitological study was carried out on 67 acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients admitted at the Institute of Tropical Medicine 'Pedro Kouri'. The results were compared with 136 HIV-seronegative patients (control group) who were also hospitalised in the same period. In both groups monoparasitism was more prevalent than polyparasitism and intestinal protozoa were more prevalent than helminths. At least one intestinal parasite was found in 34 (51%) of the 67 AIDS patients and in 65 (48%) of the control group patients. Intestinal coccidia were only detected in AIDS patients;

Cryptosporidiosis and isosporiasis in patients with AIDS.

Cryptosporidium and Isospora belli are coccidian protozoan parasites that were long recognized as pathogens of animals. They were brought to the attention of the medical community by the advent of AIDS. These parasites are associated with persistent, devastating enteritis in patients with AIDS and self-limited diarrheal illness in the immunocompetent host. Cryptosporidiosis appears to be more common than isosporiasis in both patients with AIDS and those who are not immunosuppressed. Clinically, cryptosporidiosis is indistinguishable from isosporiasis.
