Teaching evidence-based practice (EBP) to speech-language therapy students: are students competent and confident EBP users?

BACKGROUND: The importance and value of the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) in the decision-making process is recognized by speech-language therapists (SLTs) worldwide and as a result curricula for speech-language therapy students incorporated EBP principles. However, the willingness actually to use EBP principles in their future profession not only depends on EBP knowledge and skills, but also on self-efficacy and task value students perceive towards EBP. AIMS: To investigate the relation between EBP knowledge and skills, and EBP self-efficacy and task value in different year gro

Plastic changes following imitation-based speech and language therapy for aphasia: a high-density sleep EEG study.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND OBJECTIVE: measurement of plastic brain changes induced by a novel rehabilitative approach is a key requirement for validating its biological rationale linking the potential therapeutic gains to the changes in brain physiology. OBJECTIVE: Based on an emerging notion linking cortical plastic changes to EEG sleep slow-wave activity (SWA) regulation, we aimed to assess the acute plastic changes induced by an imitation-based speech therapy in individuals with aphasia by comparing sleep SWA changes before and after therapy. METHODS: A total of 13 left-hemispheric stroke pat

Mexican immigrant mothers' perceptions of their children's communication disabilities, emergent literacy development, and speech-language therapy program.

PURPOSE: This qualitative study explored mothers' perceptions of their children's communication disabilities, emergent literacy development, and speech-language therapy programs. METHOD: Participants were 14 Mexican immigrant mothers and their children (age 17-47 months) who were receiving center-based services from an early childhood intervention program, located in a large urban city in the Midwestern United States. Mother interviews composed the primary source of data. A secondary source of data included children's therapy files and log notes. Following the analysis of interviews through t

Bronchial auscultation: an effective adjunct to speech and language therapy bedside assessment when detecting dysphagia and aspiration?

Detection of aspiration by bedside examination has frequently been found to be clinically inadequate when compared with videofluoroscopy (VF) as the gold standard. In Doncaster, UK, a new multidisciplinary approach to bedside assessment was devised using physiotherapists (PT) performing bronchial auscultation (BA) in combination with the speech and language therapists' (SLT) clinical examination of dysphagia. In this study 105 patients referred for VF examination of dysphagia were first tested by the BA team. Comparison was made between the results of the VF team and the results of the BA team

Interventions through Art Therapy and Music Therapy in Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Language Disorders, and Learning Disabilities in Pediatric-Aged Children: A Systematic Review.

Traditional pharmacological treatments, although effective, often carry potential side effects, which positions art therapy and music therapy as promising non-pharmacological alternatives to alleviate symptoms and improve social, cognitive, and emotional skills without the associated risks. Through a review in the SCOPUS and WOS databases following the PRISMA protocol, a total of 80 articles were analyzed through a series of determined categories and subcategories of analysis. The aim of this study is to evaluate and synthesize the existing evidence on the efficacy and applicability of art the

Unpacking the Black Box: A Systematic Search and Narrative Review of Components in Pediatric Speech and Language Therapy Sessions.

BACKGROUND: There is limited empirical data describing components of pediatric speech-language therapy sessions across the range of practice areas. In many cases, intervention sessions function as a "black box" with internal workings insufficiently documented or understood. This systematic search and review investigates how pediatric speech-language pathology intervention sessions are described and measured. METHOD: A systematic search and review were conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Five databases were searched for peer-rev

Enhancing the Prospective Acceptability of a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Intervention With Parents From Under-Represented Communities.

BACKGROUND: Integrating the perspectives of people with lived experience is integral to developing new healthcare interventions. However, individuals from under-represented communities may face additional barriers to taking part in such patient and public involvement (PPI) activities. Within paediatric speech and language therapy (SLT), under-represented communities might include families from lower SES backgrounds and/or families where the majority language for that country is not spoken. Excluding families from under-represented communities poses the risk of new interventions not being accep

Speech and Language Therapy Weekend Service in Inpatient Rehabilitation: A Qualitative Study Exploring Perspectives of People With Stroke.

BACKGROUND: An allied health weekend service in subacute inpatient stroke rehabilitation can improve patient and organisational outcomes. However, there is insufficient evidence to justify the role of a speech and language therapy (SLT) weekend service in this setting. Exploring the perspectives of individuals who have received SLT services in inpatient stroke rehabilitation will assist with understanding the current role of SLT and the potential for SLT weekend services in inpatient stroke rehabilitation. AIMS: This study aimed to: (1) determine the aspects of an SLT inpatient rehabilitation

The effectiveness of interprofessional peer-led teaching and learning for therapeutic radiography students and Speech and Language Therapy students.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic Radiographers (RT) and Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) work closely together in caring for people with head and neck cancer and need a strong understanding of each others' roles. Peer teaching has been shown to be one of the most effective methods of teaching; however, no studies to date, have involved RT and SLT students. This research aims to establish the effectiveness and perceptions of peer-led teaching between undergraduate RT and SLT students in Ulster University. METHODS: Twenty SLT students and 14 RT students participated. Knowledge tests were taken onlin

Addressing patients' concerns in speech and language therapy consultations following the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Head and neck cancer (HNC) and its treatment impacts profoundly on patients' functional abilities, emotional well being and social interactions. Communication and swallowing are fundamental to everyday life, and the Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) has a critical role for both patients and their carers. In clinical practice, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are a key part of the armamentarium of the SLT. The purpose of the review is to summarize how these measures can be beneficial in the context of time pressured SLT outpatient consultations. RECENT FINDINGS: U

Intensive and comprehensive aphasia therapy-a survey of the definitions, practices and views of speech and language therapists in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Research evidence suggests aphasia therapy must be delivered at high intensity to effect change. Comprehensive therapy, addressing all domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, is also called for by people with aphasia and their families. However, aphasia therapy is rarely intense or comprehensive. Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Programmes (ICAPs) were designed to address this challenge, but such programmes are not widely implemented. AIMS: This study surveyed the views of UK-based speech and language therapists (SLTs) regarding intensive

A domain-general perspective on the role of the basal ganglia in language and music: Benefits of music therapy for the treatment of aphasia.

In addition to cortical lesions, mounting evidence on the links between language and the subcortical regions suggests that subcortical lesions may also lead to the emergence of aphasic symptoms. In this paper, by emphasizing the domain-general function of the basal ganglia in both language and music, we highlight that rhythm processing, the function of temporal prediction, motor programming and execution, is an important shared mechanism underlying the treatment of non-fluent aphasia with music therapy. In support of this, we conduct a literature review on the music therapy treating aphasia. T

The COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of telehealth in speech-language and hearing therapy for patients at home: an experience report.

We present an experience report on the implementation of real-time telehealth in speech-language and hearing therapy for patients who were previously seen on an outpatient basis in a primary health care service. The Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) team was monitoring twenty-five users when the first cases of COVID-19 were notified in southern Brazil. Of these, it was judged that twelve patients required at least a monitoring call every two weeks. Teleconsultations were available in this first stage, on an emergency basis, during the implementation of the project in this format. The idea was to g

Design and methods of a randomized controlled trial on early speech and language therapy in patients with acute stroke and aphasia.

PURPOSE: Most clinicians would recommend speech and language therapy (SLT) for aphasic patients. The question of when and for how long SLT should be administered still remains controversial. The aim of this trial is to evaluate the efficacy of early SLT in patients with acute stroke and aphasia in a randomized controlled trial. This report will present design and methods and discuss feasibility. METHOD: Consecutive patients with first ever ischemic stroke and aphasia are assessed by the Amsterdam-Nijmegen Everyday Language Test (ANELT) and a short version of the Norsk Grunntest for Afasi.
