Metastasizing to the colon from triple-negative breast cancer: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) metastasis to the gastrointestinal tract is uncommon, colonic metastasis from BC (CMBC) is even rarer. CASE SUMMARY: This report describes a 44-year-old female patient with metastatic triple-negative BC in the ascending colon who underwent laparoscopic radical right hemicolectomy. The patient had undergone left modified radical mastectomy only 15 months ago and stopped chemotherapy just 3 months ago. The diagnosis of CMBC was made based on the previous history of BC and positive results of several specific immunohistochemical markers (gross cystic disease fluid

Case of metastatic breast cancer from esophageal cancer.

Metastasis to the breast from extramammary malignancies is rare. This is the third case report of metastatic breast cancer from esophageal cancer. We report the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic findings of a 57-year-old woman who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer and developed metastatic cancer 2 years later. Pathologic examination of a resected specimen of the breast revealed squamous cell carcinoma invading the mammary glands. Estrogen receptor and axillary lymph node metastasis were negative with immunostaining. She is alive 6 months after the modified radical mastectomy.

Radiation Pneumonitis With 99m Tc-MDP Uptake in a Patient With Breast Cancer.

We present MDP bone scan findings of radiation pneumonitis in a 45-year-old woman with invasive ductal carcinoma of the right breast, classified as stage IIIa, T3N2M0. The patient underwent a modified radical mastectomy, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and subsequent radiotherapy, receiving the last session 7 months before the bone scan. Whole-body images acquired 3 hours postinjection of 20 mCi (730 MBq) 99m Tc-MDP showed incidentally increased uptake in the right hemithorax, confined to the lung parenchyma of the right lung on SPECT/CT images.

A rare complication in breast cancer surgery: chylous fistula and its treatment.

Chylous fistula is a complication related to thoracic duct injury, appearing in upper abdominal, thoracic and neck surgery. Occurrence of chylous fistula is very rare after modified radical mastectomy. We encountered a chylous fistula case after breast cancer surgery and successfully treated it conservatively. It is important that all surgeons dealing with breast surgery should be aware that, altough rarely, a chylous fistula can develop after axillary dissection. Experience related to the occurrence of this complication and its management when it occurs is quite restricted.

Synchronous bilateral ductal carcinoma in situ of the male breast associated with gynecomastia in a 30-year-old patient following repeated injections of stanozolol.

We report a rare case of synchronous bilateral and multifocal ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in a 30-year-old patient operated on for gynecomastia following repeated injections of stanozolol, a non-aromatizable androgen. The familial medical history was negative for breast cancer and work-up of serum hormone levels was normal. The patient underwent a modified radical mastectomy without axilla dissection 6 weeks following the primary procedure and recovered uneventfully. The role of synthetic androgens in the development of male breast neoplasia warrants further scrutiny.

Carcinoma in accessory axillary breast.

We present a rare case of carcinoma developing in an accessory breast. The patient presented with a progressive lump in her right axilla for 1 year. On examination, there was a well-developed nipple areola complex in the right axilla overlying a hard, fixed 5 × 3 cm lump. On investigation, core biopsy revealed poorly differentiated carcinoma of the breast. Mammography also revealed features of a malignant lesion with skin and muscle infiltration. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was administered followed by modified radical mastectomy after three cycles. Immunohistochemistry study showed positive stat

Breast carcinoma in a 7-years- old girl.

This is a case report of a 7 years old female patient diagnosed to have secretory carcinoma of the breast and secondary axillary lymph nodes metastasis after she presented with compliant of left breast swelling that lasted for about 6 months. It is a rare (< 1%) type of breast carcinoma with distinct histologic features. Diagnosis of this carcinoma at fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is quite difficult and it is not a particularly aggressive tumor with excellent prognosis even in the presence of metastasis. Axillary locoregional lymph node metastases are uncommon. Several authors, theref

Delayed breast reconstruction with latissimus dorsi flap.

BACKGROUND: The ideal method of breast reconstruction should be safe, reliable, and have minimal or no donor-site morbidity. We present our experience with the latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap for delayed breast reconstruction with immediate permanent implant insertion. METHODS: The latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap was performed on patients who presented for delayed breast reconstruction. From 1999 to 2007, charts of patients were reviewed for age, type of mastectomy, history of chest wall irradiation, nipple-areola complex reconstruction, and complications at both the donor site

Superior gluteal artery perforator free flap for breast reconstruction.

The purpose of this paper is to present a new method of breast reconstruction utilizing skin and fat from the buttock without muscle sacrifice. Cadaver dissections were done to study the musculocutaneous perforators of the superior gluteal artery and vein. Eleven breasts were reconstructed successfully with skin/fat flaps based on the superior gluteal artery with its proximal perforators. Long flap vascular pedicles allow the internal mammary or thoracodorsal vessels to be used as recipient vessels. This new technique has several advantages over the previously described gluteus maximus myocuta

Management and survival of female breast cancer: results of a national survey by the American College of Surgeons.

This is a resume of a Breast Cancer Survey carried out by the American College of Surgeons in 1978. Four hundred and ninety-eight hospitals in 47 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico participated, contributing a total of 24,136 female patients with histologically confirmed breast cancer. In these patients, five-year cure rates were 60.5% for clinically localized disease and 33.9% for regional disease. Five-year survival rates were 72.8% for localized disease and 49.1% for regional disease. From the 1960's into the early 1970's, there was a gradual shift away from radical mastectomy toward

Invasive Paget's Disease of the Breast: A Staging Pitfall Mimicking pT4 Disease.

Invasive Paget's disease of the breast is a rare entity with therapeutic challenges. Herein, we report three patients with Paget's disease of the breast with dermal invasion, of which two cases had coexistent invasive breast carcinoma, while the third had an extensive in situ component. Case 1 was a 49-year-old lady presenting with nipple ulceration and discharge along with concomitant multicentric right breast lesions detected on mammography. Breast conservation surgery was performed which revealed extensive high-grade ductal carcinoma in situ on histopathology, associated with invasive Paget

Axillary Lymph Node Dissection for Breast Cancer: Efficacy and Complication in Developing Countries.

PURPOSE: Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) frequently is performed as part of the surgical management of breast cancer as a therapeutic and prognostic index, but increasingly has been perceived as associated with significant complications. Data on efficacy and complications of ALND in Sudan are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and complications of ALND in patients with breast cancer treated with mastectomy and breast-conserving surgery. METHODS: We performed a prospective, hospital-based study in women with invasive breast cancer who underwent modified radical mas

Distribution of axillary lymph node metastases in different levels and groups in breast cancer, a pathological study.

BACKGROUND: It was observed during dissection of heavy deposits of axillary lymph nodes (LNs) in breast cancer that there were grossly positive LNs outside the confines of classical axillary dissection. AIM OF STUDY: To know the extent of LN metastases in these new basins by dissecting and labeling them separately, for pathological examination and proper staging of those patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2005 to 2009, 59 private patients with breast cancer who had positive axillary LNs were subjected to axillary dissection with accurate leveling according to its relation to pectoralis min

Elective hand surgery in the breast cancer patient with prior ipsilateral axillary dissection.

BACKGROUND: We wished to determine if complications after elective hand surgery were greater in women with previous mastectomy and axillary dissection than in those without. METHODS: We surveyed records of all women undergoing carpal tunnel release by the senior author (W.J.D.) from 1983 to 1993. The postaxillary dissection group (group A) was made up of 15 women; seven had some postdissection lymphedema. Group B was made up of 302 other patients who had not undergone breast surgery or axillary dissection. Anesthetic and surgical techniques were identical for both groups, with i.v. regional a

Contralateral axillary metastasis: a diagnostic and therapeutic clinical dilemma.

We report a 61-year-old woman with primary right breast cancer and metastatic lymphadenopathy in the contralateral axilla. This case represents a clinical dilemma because primary breast cancer, occult contralateral breast cancer and extra-mammary primary lesion can all be the source of the contralateral axillary metastasis. The patient underwent bilateral modified radical mastectomy. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the right breast was positive for estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR), but negative for human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2). In contrast, the right

Incidental detection of breast apocrine carcinoma via endometrial cytology.

Breast apocrine carcinoma is a rare malignancy characterized histologically by a predominance of acidophilic tumor cells exhibiting apocrine metaplasia. Apocrine tumors represent only about 0.4% of all breast cancers. Many cases are diagnosed at stage I or II; thus, the prognosis is better than that for other types of breast cancer. Here we present a 57-year-old female patient with primary apocrine breast carcinoma that was incidentally discovered by endometrial cytology. The patient had undergone routine uterine cancer screening at the age of 56 with resulting positive endometrial cytology. S

The effectiveness of different flap-raising techniques for mastectomy in reducing the rate of complications: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Seroma has been associated with some energy devices used in raising flaps during modified radical mastectomy. Perhaps, its occurrence might be reduced by determining the most effective technique for raising the flap. Hence, the wide array of energy devices available for mastectomy warrants a network meta-analysis for comparison to determine the most suitable for rseducing complications. METHODS: Searches were conducted on Google Scholar and PubMed for randomized controlled trials that compared the various energy devices (argon-cautery, diathermy, plasma blade, LigaSure, and harmon
